    Been using tape for over 50 years. It has helped me to keep from blistering my thumb. When the protective tape came out I was super psyched. Haven’t had a blister since. Everyone should learn how to use tape properly.

    I don't like using tape on the inside of my thumb (like the white tape), I much prefer to use black tape on the back side of my thumb in the hole (I use interchangeable (slug) thumbs), and red cloth tape on the back of my thumb. I adjust the pressure on my thumb with the black tape in the hole and adjust so that I can hold my ball beside me with arm fully stretched out with absolutely no pressure (squeeze) applied with my hand. That is, a completely relaxed hand. I should be able to wiggle my arm around, or even slightly jiggle my arm up and down without the ball dropping off of my hand, but, if I rotate my hand forward (like a ball release) then the ball should fall right off my hand. For me, this is the perfect fit so that I can maintain a completely relaxed hand through my entire swing and throw, keeping my hand completely relaxed throughout the entire time. I have become the absolutely thumb and finger taping king. I am super duper picky about it and have to have it just perfect to bowl well. My thumb seems to change a LOT, can even change quite a bit during a single game, so I adjust often throughout the bowling day/night to keep it just right.

    This was great! My hands tend to swell in the warmer weather and shrink in the colder weather. The best tip was the layering of the tape, can't wait to try that logic. Also did not know that the tape on the back of the thumb allowed for a smoother release. I stopped bowling 25 years ago, hurt my back in 2012 but that’s not the reason for exiting bowling. I felt that my back recovery was complete just a month ago, decided to go bowling to test my back and got the itch to bowl regularly again. Joined a league within one week and purchased two new balls. Loving the competition again but I have a way to go. My first ball was drilled awfully, the second ball feels great but have yet to throw it down the lane, the pro shop was gracious enough to refit the first ball at no charge. The person drilling the ball noticed that my hand swelled from the time he measured to after he drilled it, asked me if I had my hand in my pockets and yes, I did. The sounds of it, taping the ball will be a regular thing for me. Thank you very much for the awesome tips!

    Have you guys ever heard of cutting and stacking the white tape so that it is shaped to the contour of the thumb? I've been doing that for years now and it works great, as I can keep my thumb straight but still feel the grip toward the end of my thumb.

    I know this was a yr ago but its perfect timing for me. Ive been slowly getting back into the game over past 2 yrs after a long time being out of the game. My thumb always gets sore and rips skin sometimes. Happened to me today after 7 games. I like the idea of the tape that you stick right to thumb. I will hope it will protect my thumb while also allowing me to bowl longer.

    I have started tiered taping my thumb hole. This helps me from squeezing which has increased my scores considerably. I even rolled a 300 game recently using this taping method. Going to talk with my PSO about adjusting my pitch for my thumb.

    • @jfabritz
      @jfabritz Před rokem +1

      The tiered tape really addresses the taper of your thumb more than the pitch. The largest section of the tiered tape are below your base knuckle of the thumb, where a pitch change will have the most effect.

    I use the Vise feel tape. One piece and I have the ball drilled to account for it. Navy blue most of the time and light blue in my plastic spare ball. Change it like every 6 games. Use plugs currently, no interchangeable thumbs.

    I bowl a 4 game scratch trio on Tuesdays and a handicap 4 man league on Thursdays and a occasional tournament here and there.. and I used to use quite a bit of tape but since i got remeasured and fitted properly I rarely need to use tape but when I do its the 1/2" white in the front. sometimes ill use the skin tape as a precaution if I'm bowling a longer formant tournament.

    Use a tiered white tape method pretty much like Joe Slowinski showed several years ago in Bowling This Month magazine which uses five pieces cut to make up the unit from several different lengths (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full length). It's two thicknesses at the end of the unit and several more at the end. It allows the tip of your thumb to get a feel. It helps a guy like me not to bend my thumb in the hole during the swing. Helps keep my thumb straight and relaxed throughout the swing. I use a forward pitch in the thumb hole, too, which keeps my grip relaxed as well.

      Same here. Flare of my thumb is the enemy. Some would say perhaps drill the thumb smaller, but width becomes a problem.

    Great video guys!! I use tape in all my balls. The tape I use come in a rainbow of colors with each color being a different feel and thickness. I usually use 2 pieces of grey tape. My female friend uses the tape on top of her thumb but before she puts it on she puts a layer a new skin then puts on the tape!!! I guess it helps keep the tape from coming off!!!

    The back of thumb tape's main reason for me is to create a CONSISTENT release. I have dry skin and I'm a sweaty guy. Shot to shot can my thumb may stick or let the ball fly off if I have no tape on it. The storm back of thumb tape works best for me outta the main options available. VISE! Please bring back your Feel Proformance tapes! Best thumb hole textured tapes w 8 different levels of grit texture. Maybe knock it to 4-6 grit options if it wasn't selling well. I stocked up on my fav 3 grit/colors when I heard they discountinued them :(

  • @JohnJohnson-yu4my
    @JohnJohnson-yu4my Před rokem +1

    I use quite a bit of tape. However, I mainly use it towards the tip of the thumb to prevent over squeezing and flare at the knuckle. I also use tape on the back of the thumb for better release out of the ball. I do some times use thicker vs thinner tape to account for swell as I can't always position the textured tape in the exact right spot. The back of my thumb always hits the same spot every time I enter the ball.

    I do not use tape in the thumb hole and have actually never heard of it till now. However i use two pieces on the back of my thumb(top and inside) To stop the friction caused there. The Next time I come to JR Pro shop for a new ball I will also bring the tape I am using for propper fitment. Thanks very much for all your Videos. I find them very helpful.

    Im in the camp of keeping my thumb whole alittle bigger and using a piece or 2 of black tape at the back of the thumb. I also keep a pair of scissors handy so i can cut a piece in half if needed. My hands sweat alot while bowling so my ball will start to hang at some point so having multiple adjustments with the tape comes in handy

    I started using tape in early 1980's bowled a lot of games. Thumb swelled up a lot so usually started with at least 6. (Black electrical tape before Pro Shops had thumb tape to sale.) Buy tape by 500 roll, I'm called the Queen of tape. That's okay, I don't have calluses on thumb like a lot of bowlers.

    I didn't really use tape until college. My hand doesn't swell too much but it makes a universal feel. If anything my thumb shrinks into I warm up. I drill my stuff now to fit two pieces of tape in the off chance I have to pull one out the feel stays the same.

    I have been using thumb tape on my thumb for quite a while. I have a piece that fits both sides of my thumb. Top and bottom. Thoughts? Also been using smooth tape more so in the thumb hole over textured but when I do, I use Real Bowlers Tape. Been messing with thumb tape only on top, but I seem to hang up more.

    I used to bowl for nationals for my college team at younger age. And had to eventually quit bowling after that since I lacked the idea/guidance that I needed to work with my PSO closely and my thumb hole was not right. My thumb basically stopped me from bowling. It swells too much everytime after a day of games, making me always needing to enlarge the hole. Then next time start of a new block I had to grab it so hard to not drop, and it became a viscous cycle. Eventually I gave up.
    Years later I tried another PSO and decided that I wanted to solve the problem once and for all this time. Asked for lots and lots of forward pitch, chunkier edges of the hole to hang unto and etc. But eventually I learnt that it is not all about the thumb hole but my grip fingers. I had had them insert too deep and never had them lock in place. A very shallow grip fingers insertion and a pinch more of pressure on my grip finger joints made the ball sit in my hand and not moving at all. Now I totally don't feel my thumb anymore. Back in the day, I can never bowl more than 6 games in a row because the thumb would stop me. Now I can bowl as long as my stamina and mental focus is there. It used to be that my thumb has all kind of funny feelings after couple games. Like slightly painful due to always applying pressure, or the pain you experience when it is about to form new callous. Now it felt like it doesn't exist anymore.
    Somedays I went into the center feeling a bit chilled and my thumb is actually dry and slippery so I'd tape up my hole like in the video. I do front and back black and white full suite. But honestly after I learnt the right grip I felt they are barely more than just to snug it up the hole. My thumb is totally relaxed and non-existing so they won't help with adding grip pressure/friction and etc. The essentials for me though is the protector tape at back of the thumb coz I have a bad habit of turninng my wrist before release. This is due to old drillings in the past gave me a muscle memory that I need to start catching it at the bottom early due to too much reverse pitch. Now it sometimes made my thumb stuck in the ball and would rub and tear the webbing of thumb. Hope this can help those that are having the same issues as I did and reduce their cost of learning their mistakes.

    Currently don't have interchangeable thumbs so I use tape to adjust for size of my thumb for the day.
    My thumb size varies day-to-day depending on the day, what I eat (salts), how much I bowl, etc.
    Don't want to show up at the alley and can't fit your thumb in your bowling ball because you couldn't help yourself to guac and chips earlier in the day 😅

    With the amount of money I spend on Hada patches and Motiv thumb tape, I should have a VIP account with these companies. I will double up on back-of-the-thumb tape to avoid putting too much white or silver tape in the front and altering the overall pitch and/or span of my thumb.

    I tend to use anywhere from 1 to 3 pieces of white tape in my Switchgrip thumbs to get my fit where I want it. I've found that my 3 thumbs are about 2 pieces of tape different from one to the next (1 piece in the medium is like 3 in the large, etc.), but go with whichever fits my width best that day.

    My thumb is extremely oval, and is not the typical tapered shape. It's close to tapered front to back, but the sides of my thumb flare out significantly at the knuckle (this is mostly due to callouses that have developed on both sides). The result of this is that it's near impossible to get a thumb slug drilled to fit my thumb properly. We've tried many times, but eventually we just have to get it as close as possible and use tape to do the rest.
    I also have skin that is prone to tearing very quickly if there's any friction whatsoever. This means I'm using 3-5 pieces of white tape in the front (being careful to not let it wrap around the sides of my thumb), 3+ pieces of black in the back, plus the speed tape on the back of my thumb.
    I've tried really hard to get the fit such that I can hold my ball hanging down with no pressure in my hand (as I've heard many times is ideal), but inevitably it ends up tearing new callouses somewhere.

    I can't use tape on my thumb at all. No matter the thickness, I feel like I'm going to lose the ball in the backswing. I do use white textured tape in my thumbhole on the pad side of my thumb. I sometimes use black tape for the frontside. You can't really use textured tape for the frontside of the thumb because your thumb will get all messed up.

    Old school bowler here. Not sure I agree with the tape in the front of the thumb hole. Although small, you are actually adjusting the span, the more you add, the more you change your span. I've always used it on the backside of the thumb. I use white tape first with a piece of black over the white, depending on how much my thumb changes in a set. I like the smooth feel versus the friction. That being said, I do also need to have my thumbs redone as I've lost some weight.

      I agree but I think they were just going over like the how to for people new to tape. I'm sure you have had a off piece where you really felt the edge of the tape, once. I think they were trying to tell people how to avoid that.
