- In this video I get the flywheel, damper plate and gearbox on. I fix the the output seal on the raw water heat exchanger, change the oil dipstick, mount the starter motor and start plumbing in some to the cooling and oil hoses.

I think its so wonderful that people are sending you gifts! I still think about the outpouring of support from people wanting you to keep your Jeep, that was so beautiful. I am so glad to see people come together in order to enjoy and share your passion for boats and life.
Thanks Earl, it is very kind of people. I hope they get pleasure from knowing it is things like this compass that will be steering this vessel on a true course for years to come. :)
The puppy while fitting the blower, "what you doing" "I help"
Great quote from The Wind in the Willows: “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”
― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows
Way to true. Excellent quote. Unfortunately, it's an actual addiction, you can always justify a bigger or better or faster one. The lust is never sated. Still. Messing about with boats, naught finer. Just dont go full Toad, with those auto mobiles. Meep meep!
Nah, much love. Shoutout to the MCM shirt dude! Meep meep!
Dave, I loved the book so much that I wrote a new version for my river, The St Lawrence, several years ago. Much of the story changed, but, of course I kept the quote. My book is called The Wind in the Islands.
Been my motto most of my adult life.
I am a very happy man ... the compass arrived. All the way from RedBank New Jersey. All the best. Dave Gray.
Thank you Dave! Sorry I lost your original email. It looks great. Can't wait to get it installed. :)
It's a great looking compass, Mr Gray. Outstanding!
"Let's take'm to the spray booth..." love these bit by bit muttering pieces. These vids make my day. Keep 'em coming. Great stuff Stu.
Who among us has never used our coffee mug as a parts soaker? Wiping it with your t-shirt made it art.😂🤣
I am absolutely blown away how he arranges his talks in the boat cabin at exactly 6:20 every time! Boy, that takes perfect time management... 😉
I believe it 6:23 ! But I’m with ya on that ! Lol
Like others said, "The paint booth" is a masterly way of words to describe what ya gotta do when ya gotta do it...Love it and no, I didn't fall down laughing but I have a sore rib cage just the same..Well done Bill !!
Yes, it would be wonderful to have a huge workshop with everything you could ever need or want but somehow we make do. :)
The art of the thumbnail: Put the puppy on the engine for the picture. Perfect! ;)
I'm 10,000 miles away, but the similarities in our work are hilarious. Tools, dogs, broken parts, learning on the fly, even the coffee cup! This is the only channel that I read all the comments.
I think blokes in workshops is one of the universal bonding things. :)
I think Bill saved you considerable balls ache. Better to do it correctly the first time. Well done Bill.
Thanks for the “spray booth” comment, it gave me a proper chuckle ;D
Really enjoying your channel and the casual no stress attitude you project. I'm sure there are occasions when you have reached your wits end, but you never show that on video. Some irritation will inevitably happen but you always focus on the positive.
Love the Open Ya Bastard bottle opener!!
Good catch Bill...glad you let Stu know about that one...it went right past me as well.
How good is the community with friendly advice? They are making you look like you know what you are doing (HaHa). Love the puppy and the engine is looking amazing. If you are building a Detroit this has to be one of the best resources on CZcams. I love the content.
Thanks mate. It is great to know that people with experience with these engines have my back. This is my first one but I'm really hoping to learn a lot about them over the years.
Loved the spectators Stu, as an old saying goes "generally speaking you can trust a Dog who doesn't like someone, but you cannot trust someone who doesn't like dogs".
I am loving your attention to detail on the engine rebuild Stu. Taking the time to disassemble EVERYTHING, clean, repair, repaint, wire wheel bolts, etc. Some might find it tedious but I’m enjoying the content!!
Thanks mate. That stuck valve is something you would never find in a service. Sometimes pulling everything apart is the only way to be sure.
I have said this before, you will know this beast better than you know your partner and that's not be a bad thing.
I not that confident about things that go brum at sea, so I respect your skills, knowledge and expertise.
Thanks mate, I certainly feel like I know the whole boat, including the engine, very well now. :)
engine rebuild is going very nicely. amazing how the propulsion system got you home even though it was in sad shape.
It is amazing. People do say that about these Detroits though, they can have serious damage and still get you home to port. That gives me a lot of confidence in this engine.
Wind in the Willows. Best quote of the book!
...said Rat to Mole.
Bill to the rescue at 15:34 gracefully and respectfully, like the way you worded that.
Go Bill!
Gracefully and respectfully are terms hard to find on the internet
Also > Go Buffalo Bills
I am really appreciating what a monster that Detroit is. Wow. I can't wait to see it run. Even more, see it push the boat around. Fingers crossed on the washer ... Great progress, Stu.
I don't know why but watching these video clips before going to bed, helps me to fall asleep. Like an asmr for logical/practical people or something . so thank you. Very interesting channel, following for six months.
Thanks Olivier, glad the videos are relaxing. :)
You have the same model spray booth as me.
Ausgamer5171 Same here but I usually install the aftermarket cardboard walls to prevent overspray
I laughed so hard. Don't forget to wipe out the coffee cup before more coffee goes in it!!!
Hoooo-leeeee ssshhiat I laughed so hard when he said that and then just started painting across the work bench hahaha hahaaaha
I have something very similar although it’s incorporated air extraction/ ventilation is even better when I’m spraying anything I hang in the tree👍🏴
Loving this process. When you pulled it out, and took it apart, it was hard to see what was what with the grease and grime. But now it is easy to follow the story. Also loving watching the dogs trying to "help".
Gotta tell you, I really enjoy your videos but something happened this morning that I thought was priceless... my nine-year-old granddaughter was sitting beside me playing games on her iPad before school while I was watching this video and saw the snippets of the puppy and literally had me rewind and watch them twenty times. Thanks for the fun!
Thanks again for your time, great viewing.
I can't wait until WE start it for the first time,
"The old two nut technique" - My wife loves that one too...
Don't trust the old dip stick as being correct Stu. Standard GM full level is 1 " below the sump / block parting line.
I was going to suggest it might not be right once in the boat and the alignment is done, i would set it all up, then put in what GM say, plus what the oil cooler needs, then mark that level, run the engine etc let the level settle down then mark that level, should be sorted then. My boat engines would always settle to a level they liked...
Good advice. I can't count the number of times the part on an engine is not the correct part.
Yes, I agree, the old dip stick you that you're replacing is probably not stock
Looking more and more like a true lean, mean, green machine stu, I think it's all starting to come together now, not bad for a fella with the patience of a saint on the budget of a shoe lace
Thanks mate!
It seems that no one that I can find here in California sells the Nulon bottle opening. Neat item. Love the show. Learning a lot about boats and motors and everything in-between. Loved the spray booth. I look forward to your next Vlog
Thanks Albert!
It’s coming along nicely ! Not much left to do ! That compass is a nice one ! 👍
Thanks Dave. :)
Goes to show "every day is a school day". That was so awesome one of your viewers helped correcting you.
Stu
That Detroit is looking mighty nice. And I bet Eddie might be jealous of the smells on it. Lol 😎😎
These videos are making me jealous. Im thinking of tearing out the 18hp garden tractor motor and redoing it lol
It is quite a satisfying project. :)
Stu I read your list but boy you're getting close! I'm getting all excited for the Seaquest part of it, outstanding!
Thanks Mike!
I always 'chase' threads with a reversible drill. Just set the clutch a bit past slip and use some oil. Saves a bunch when you've got several to spiff up, never broke a tap doing it this way...Battery drills are best for this as they reverse quick and won't side load as much as heavier corded units...When you need to polish or 'hone' a sleeve, you can make a quick hone from a dowel, saw a slit in one end , insert a suitable length of folded 220 emery cloth, oil it up, chuck the dowel in a drill, or drill press, and twist it into the hole. The emery should protrude just a bit past the end of the 'slit'. Remember to keep the 'hone' moving along the length of the surface being polished, you want a series of fine 45 degree scratches in both directions to hold lube once reassembled. I was a 'Class A' honer in the Aero-space industry, and made parts for the Space Shuttle, so I know it's easier than it seems...
Thanks Mike, I'll give it a shot!
As the block is dry when you do first oil fill measure it to book quantity then check oil stick that way you will know exactly where the full line is for your engine in situ.
You're making good progress Stu. Keep on truckin'
Thanks Mike!
Don't make come there and straighten out Bill... LOL great vids Stu.
Well done mate its almost done and then the sea trials and the lining up of the prop shaft and then some fishing
„Take it to the spray booth“... 😂😂😂
That’s a lot of satisfaction going back together.
It has been a lot of fun. :)
2:30am here in Florida and the notice for this video made my night! I love when your new videos come out so I can see the adventure continue. Cant wait till you begin making salvage and treasure hunting videos once the boat gets going. Meanwhile I hope we can help inspire you with all the little minor tasks you need to get done here int he final push on your project. Keep up the great work Stu!
Michigan same time zone
Jim Alley , Melbourne here ,same time as you then maybe not as we are on daylight savings time.
Around midnight here in the Seattle area when the notice came in. Decided to save it until morning. 8:AM next day now.
Having been there before finding an awesome person like Bill willing to impart his knowledge with the only intent of being helpful is incredibly awesome, my hat is off to Bill who ever he is,
Stu,
The lost email scenario is common place at my house.
I have 5 cats that like to help me when I am on the laptop.
They ALL seem to know a secret key combination that deletes emails from the inbox and the server , and take turns being the one to to execute this bit off "fun".
I'm using Outlook as my mail reader anyone who can enlighten me as to what they do and help with a recovery method will be entitled to my first born son and can drag him out of my back room anytime.
Cheers Eric
Nice job getting there little by little
Great shot of puppy on motor!
Great video Stew! So much progress happening. Must feel good putting things back together again... keep up the hard work, you’re getting there!
Thanks Paul
cleaned up, rebuilt and painted engine looks Beautiful , csnt wait to see/hear you fire it up.
Junkyard Dog is back 👏🏻
Hello again from Ireland, where I'm jealous of your weather!!! Totally into your build and loving that engine. So looking forward to seeing it fitted and fired up. Keep up the great work. Honest and no nonsense!
Thanks mate. :)
Wow, That's quite a motor, hope it fits thru the deck!
hi Stu, you have the best viewers . So great to get the advise on the heat exchanger seal. I would assume the holes you unblocked are also to let you know what's leaking so you fix it! like the drain hole in auto cooling pumps that dribbles coolant on the floor when the seals and bearings are going on the pump shaft.
I saw in the list freeze frame the fabricate the exhaust on the bottom of the list...….I guess its simple but location and exit out of the engine bay/boat are all important to deal with a vibration pipe....and effective heat shield ….might be interesting project? cheers warren.
She's coming along nicely! Can't wait to see the bench start and finally, the install. Looks great with the frshllrsh paint. Hope she runs perfect. See you in the next one.
The head turn face shield Lol love it!
Beautiful Engine cant wait to see it power your vessel
If Stu invites you for coffee bring your own cup!
Great video stew , motor coming along nicely now . You won’t believe how excited I am when I see that little dot on your utube profile . ,
Thanks Andrew. :)
What a total BEAUTY this Detroit is! Love all the episodes about the engine, I could watch that for hours. Thank you!
Thanks Dan!
2:33 rocking the mightycarmods shirt... nice
Getting your failures on film is what made me Subcribe.
One problem Stu...You forget to turn on the extraction fans in the spray booth...🤣🍻👍...
just love this series Stu ,, keep up the good work
It's nice when all the hard work comes down to an itemised page of things to complete. As our friend says Getter Done. Cheers
Engine is looking real good as she comes together.
"Come over all Frieburger and made a list", I love it. I too suffer the same affliction.
fmxrider429 yeah I have that one aswell
Go to a muffler shop and have them build a coolant pipe. They can bend and swedge up the pipe for the different sizes. Muffler pipe is on the thin side 16 ga I think but any good shop will have stainless pipe so corrosion isn't a issue. I have done this on most of the power units I build for coolant hose and have had very good luck.
any project done well is completed one task at a time. your rebuilt is looking good.
Great stuff Stuey this is is really coming together now and engine looks great mate it really does, you have my complete attention 🍻👍🏴
Thanks mate!
Stu, great video this is really getting exciting I can't wait to see you put it in the boat and get it running.
Great job so far Stu - loving the progress - keep up the good work mate!
Sad that we are getting closer to the end of the rebuild. But, glad that the engine and boat are coming together. That engine and boat will have at least another 50 years.
That was fun! Recommend you take a white paint marker, and paint the DD name/logo! It’s nerd/geek, but looks cool.
Really looking good so far . Can't wait for start and test running .
This hint might help a viewer or you next time. To remove the stuck piston, make a plate to bolt onto the flange, sealing it well and in that plate install a grease fitting into the chamber. pump it up with grease to force out the piston.
JIM
Nice idea!
or put paper in there and hit it with a rubber hammer, more paper and repeat, repeat, repeat. Can do the same with getting out old bearings, etc
@@ilsando3550 I use that for throw out bearings😂
I was thinking drill a smallish hole on the end of the housing so you could put a punch down it to push out the piston. Then tap the hold and put a plug in it with sealant/loctite.
Glad you got it out ok!
RichE San Diego, CA
That missing washer is going to come back to haunt you mate, Maybe you could have given it a little pry and slide the washer in. you are doing great. Love the work you are doing
Had a look and it is way too tight to slide even a feeler gauge in. I'm thinking the paint is about as thick as the washer would have been.
Dual use-ing your coffee cup as a solvent parts washer = now that's dedication to the cause!
Great video Stu, cheers
Incredible work. I love the video.
Sweet I was sitting at my kitchen table at 1:19 am CST wondering when the new video would arrive!!!! Nice work guys the Detroit is coming right along!!!!!
Stu get the wife to de wrap and wash a few fruit or veg tins ,they make great parts washer or paint cans , brush cleaning with solvents etc ,far better than plastic and recyclable.Engine Really is looking great now ,can't wait till she's in the Old SHIP and running.
Thanks Gerald.
@08:00... I really like your aussi style parts cleaner... 🙂
Love the David Freiburger list reference! 😂😂
Great video Stu. The engine is coming together nicely. Now getting everything ready for the test start. Exciting times ahead.
Thanks mate. :)
Stu you are living my dream.
I always look forward to your next video.
Just one question,,,,who are the nobs that don't like the vids.
Thanks Malcom. I don't know, but I'd love to meet them. ;)
@@DangarMarine I'm sure you would,,,, you can never have to many fenders
Awesome Job ! Lots of great advice in the comments too which nice to see.
Gotta say that's one pretty looking power plant! Something else i learned today, acetone can clean a coffee cup! Man i'm so glad i follow this channel!! S#it's coming together Stu, gotta say this is a blast. Oh, very much enjoying the supervision and help you're getting at the shop from the four legged mechanics.
Thanks again!
Your doing great ! But the best thing is all the greatest Mate's. nice rattel can technique , she'll
Run run a trick now .
So many pups in the workshop. I love it.
Coming along nicely Stu, can't wait to see and hear you tooling out in the bay, Jeff in LA USA
What a great engine. Another awesome video. Looking good. Can’t wait for the next one. 👍
Looking good.
Thanks for the video.
This is all getting increasingly exciting... the suspense is delicious.
great video again stu and nice MCM rep'ing in there as well ;)
Old Land Rover dipsticks sometimes slip in their fixings... standard fix is when you do a complete oil and filter change, accurately measure out the correct book volume of oil (including book volume for oil filter/oil cooler) etc, run the engine, and then mark that oil level on the dipstick as the correct level. In this situation, your boat might not sit exactly level in the water, the engine might not sit exactly level in the engine room, so do the same, accurately measure the book volume for sump + filter + cooler, use that level to mark the dipstick, then you know what the correct full level should be for your own particular installation.
Yes, no point marking it until it is in the boat and sitting and the correct angle, good point.
Its coming along nicely! Great work
Thanks mate!
Can't wait for that first start up! Hope your next cup of coffee tasted ok!! Keep up the great work!
Looking excellent stu! 😉
