THIS information from Dan Infalt has been THE single most important part of my deer hunting education in the past 20 years. Most of my hunting career was based on what I learned as a teenager from my dad and uncles. But they never hunted near water, so this wasn't part of their experience. For them, it was ALL about the rut or food. As an adult public land river bottoms is all I hunt. Two years ago The Hunting Beast taught me about how deer use water for isolation, and it was an absolute game changer. Huge wetland areas I'd ignored for decades suddenly becamse my target, and I've confirmed every single thing Dan discusses here and elsewhere. Just how far into water - including swimming - bucks will go to find solitude continues to blow my mind. When you think it's too deep and too remote...it's probably perfect!
These short informative videos are cool to watch. I also like the parts that you include in these videos of you and your friend Rick having fun hunting together, and goofing off some. Good stuff.
Great video Dan. Each step is a choice and chance you either end up to your waist, filling your boots or just a soft spot. This kind of hunting is not for the weekend warriors nor the weak minded. It’s not even the brave...it’s for the wise....Thanks
I hunt the Atchafala basin in Louisiana and hard nasty hunting. You are exactly right, I very seen bucks bed on a downed tree surrounded by 3 foot of water.
In the swamps of NC I was going as far as I could get to a point on an island that had been logged 15 years before it was really windy and I wasn’t making any noise , I looked fifty yards out in front of me at a stump that I thought looked funny ,, I swear you won’t believe it but there was a deer asleep on top of that stump
"It has to be pre-scouted". I took my buddy back into the cattails and alders on opening day one year based on a satellite picture that showed a trail cut through the mess. Turns out it was a creeping trickle of water that cut that "trail", not a human with a machete. We walked in an hour to the "trail" and then fumbled through horseshit to get to our stand location. He heard a mature buck stomping back and forth off that point and I didn't hear nor see a thing all night posted up over a big communal scrape. The walk out in the dark was far, far worse than the walk in.
I have succeeded with no prior scouting... But, odds are far greater if you know exactly what your getting into, how close you can get, and about where you need to be.
I have to say I watch a lot of your videos and this one really resonates with me if you’re ever in New York and you wanna hunt on about 800 acres of swamp woods open field send me a message upstate New York
One of the best secrets to successfully hunting mature bucks and you just gave it away for free?!?! You should be doing seminars or be paid for your own outdoors program ( outside of CZcams). Thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom and experience.
i wanted to give you a nod of thanks.. i have never found a shed or a head in the woods .. after watching your videos and learning so much about deer and the way they move threw the woods and edges.. i found my first shed .. a small 4 point , it was n a small spruce tree.. looked like he went to rub and popped it.. so i went out today and found my first dead head.... a nice 8 point, nothing huge but OMG... i was so excited... i forgot to check the ribs and see if it was a shot deer or something else... i would have never checked the locations i found them in if i hadnt watched you and the hunting public thanks for the knowledge you have passed along...
Hard plastic sled. Can confirm. Can be used to drag bear bait or shot waterfowl too. Get one where the plastic is resistant to abrasion. Get a harness and become the sled-dog. Best $45 I ever spent.
I'm his nephew, I used to get a postcard from him every January with the pictures and details of the hunts when I was a kid. I remember getting that original Polaroid of the 400lb slob. Weird seeing it on CZcams now!
A buddy of mine 35yrs ago went through the ice in the swamp. He was walking around a blow down.DON'T EVER WALK THE SIDE OF THE ROOTS!.Luckily back then there was lots of hunters.Someone heard him yelling. There was also snow,so tracked and pulled him out just in time.He was in bad shape, but ok. Cell ph.may not help in this situation.I'll keep mine high on my person as possible on these hunts.
He is 100% accurate i hunt the bottomland amd swamps and slews in mississippi and have seen deer walking in knee deep water beeding on little pockets of dry land
Live in the South and I got some friends that will tell you straight up. If your not going through knee deep water you might as well stay home and these cats shoot some big ass deer. Most people wont trudge through the stuff to get back there, he shot one laying down on a root bed next to the edge of the swamp paddled almost right up on them.
I saw a mature doe jump into a cattail marsh and swim her way to safety, taking the longest possible line away from me as the crow flies. Imagine trying to swim with hooves?
Seen a fawn once, this deer probably wasn't much more then two weeks old.It swam straight down the middle!lol.Come to a small log jam went over it like it wasn't there. It just keep going. At 300yrds,"where i seen a couple earlier on the bank,it got out sniffed around a few seconds, then back to the water and swam off to maple rapids I suppose.
I don’t have anything even remotely close to what you are talking about but I didget a few little nuggets of information that I can use. It’s all revelant tho
True! If. Ot hunting around swamps and cattails, big bucks will bed edge of nasty thicket on a hump with thick escape routes where he can hear hunter's coming. There are places similar but different in Ohio or elsewhere
I really love your stuff man, especially coming from a giy who has cut his teeth hunting public land consisting of 75% swamp land. Now watching your videos I'm starting to realize I've missed ALOT of great spots. However a quick question for you...what is the best way to hunt these spots without spooking deer? I mean roughly? Can I set up on the ground or should I always be 15 ft in a tree? Morning vs Night???I know you touched on it but any help would be great!
Outside of the rut evenings are much better than mornings. I prefer a tree, but you have to play the cards your dealt. Sometimes you have to hunt off the ground.
Dan the thumbnail on this amazing video needs an explanation. That’s an absolute mammoth buck in that picture. What’s the story on this? How old were you?
I think that was around 1992... an opening weekend bow buck. I shot my 1st bear the day before getting that buck. I found it in an oxbow glassing in the summer in a very remote area. Shot him over a scrape mid day when the rain stopped.
@@thehuntingbeast love it! It’s not often you see guys getting bucks that look like the Frankenstein version of a deer. By the way, I want to thank you for all your knowledge. I love watching THP and all, but I think you’re probably the greatest big buck hunter our country has ever seen.
Here's another.A grate uncle of mine had this, what i called the cherry bowl swamp. Its had a 8 or 10 foot ridge around most of it.This dates back in the family a100yrs.Thing is it had a spot where there was sink hole-quicksand.Well it scard most of the family, but grate uncle Ervin told me where it was with some history of throwing a frig a horse and other things.lol.So it freaked ppl out.I shit out not the BIGGEST BUCKS IN THE COUNTY where in this rare swamp for these parts of Mi.I had a old pare off fireman boots. My dad a volunteer back in the day.I would walk that swamp ALL DAY.I would take a step,I would here splash, splash. They were like 30, 40yrds away.Never once did i ever see one of those bucks, walking in that swamp. But it NEVER stopped me to do it again.Oh,that swamp? Its was a 4 or 5 cirlce.Them buck would never leave it,just keep going in circles✌
Which side of the river do the deer prefer to bed on for the wind? If the wind is coming out of the west would they be on the west side with the wind to their back and looking East out over the river? Or would they be on the east side looking East? Ty I love the videos.
Depends on the cover... Oxbows often work best with bucks smelling the land bridge and watching across the river, bet I have seen occasions when the watch the land bridge and smell across the river. Along the river common bedding can have river to back with vision looking away, or back can be to an obstacle like a fallen tree while watching over the river... They always watch down wind.
I haven’t watched the video yet, but where I live and hunt, there is almost ZERO flat land. All steep hills. It’s unfortunate, but at least it should always be public land. It isn’t good for much else 😂
Dan, are you using these stands more for afternoon sits? Or are you jumpin into the water before sunrise too? Thanks for sharing your expertise. Great content.
Took the guidance from this video and scouted a big public marsh today. Its surround by public timber and ag fields. Found a lot of individual beds but no rubs on any trees. Is that normal or did I find doe beds?
Its always nice to find rubs, they are solid evidence that bucks bed there. But, the lack of rubs does not mean bucks don't bed there... In areas with low numbers of big bucks and a lack of competition we find a lot less bedding than in areas of high buck populations.
the winning numbers for last night's drawing was 15-48-56-58-70 an 4 sorry. if you have any special numbers you would like to try let me know I'll play them for ya.

Never heard any other big buck expert ever teach this type of scouting so clearly and concisely. Thank you Dan!
I've learned a lot watching your videos. Appreciate you scrap. 🤟🏾
Nice video Dan, love how you add all the old footage to make the points hit home!! 💪💪
Yes. Footage adds so Much to the big picture and main pearl of wisdom
Outstanding video. Best ever about buck bedding in swamps.
Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner? Thanks for the kind words about my video sir!
Good advice. If I do that here in northeast FL I’ll end up getting bit in the thigh by wally gator or a rattlemoccasin knowing my luck.
Me too. thats why i have to drive 15 hours to Ohio!
Yea I wouldn't be anywhere near water in Florida lol
Great video Dan! Thank you for all that you do for us and the hunting community!

My personal favorite video.. I think I can definitely apply your advice to my new big swamp areas. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks Dan.
Another great one from The Big Bowl of Cereal Killer. 😁 Water is going to be a bigger focus for me this year. Loved it.
