I'm currently at Fort Sam right now in tech school as a 4N0X1, about 2/3 of the way through the program. The information he gives in this video is definitely still accurate a few years later, and the advice he gives is also very helpful. I was one of the ones who didn't necessarily want this job going into basic but I've learned to love it since then. If you want to get your start in the medical field this is definitely the right AFSC to go for since you can build off of it pretty easily and it gives you a very good foundation to do that if your dream is to become a Nurse, PA, Doctor, etc. Yes the tech school is challenging and you WILL need to study to pass your tests, but to my knowledge the harder the tech school, the better the job. I strongly suggest anyone who has this job or wants it to watch this video prior to leaving for basic or as you're starting your tech school and take his advice.

In the early 2000's, the Navy Corpsman did the same. Right after boot camp they simply marched across the street for A school.

Currently waiting on a MEPS date from my recruiter. At first, I wanted to do Health Services Management because I am planning on transferring to a university next fall for my BSN. But after watching this, I’ve really changed my perspective and think that this would be a great addition and opportunity that would boost my start to my career as a future nurse. Only downside, I may have to take a semester off of school but in the end I think it will pay off. Thanks for being so informative and inspiring!

@@tkjday Hello! Yes! For studying I really recommend flashcards and quizzing yourself! Also the NREMT has practice tests available on their website, I think it’s worth the $10 to do at least one practice test! Also I recommend the EMT Pocket Pro app and the EMT Crash Course book available on Amazon! Set aside time to review and study every day, even the weekends! Give yourself a break every 25 to
30 mins! 👍🏽

This is awesome. I grew up by wright Patt, was in AF JROTC. Moved to FL halfway through highschool. Got my assoc. In science but got my LPN in a trade school because RN is expensive and i wasnt entirely sure its what I wanted. I love my Job! But in FL its so expensive to live without overtime; you can forget it if putting school in there. Im single, nothing holding me down at the moment So AF here I come haha

Let me date myself. 1983 basic training. I went in as a paramedic because back then paid slots were few and far between. Basic was 6 weeks and i think the 902 school at Sheppard AFB was 6 weeks . I took a bypass exam and walked across the bridge to wilford hall. Did my time and fell into a Air evac flight medic job for the next 18 years.

This vid honestly helped a lot, I actually am studying to be nationally certified, hopefully will take the test within the next few months. My plan is to finish that, start working as an emt, and just spend my time getting fit and everything and just prepping for basic, glad to know I can use my cert to bypass a few months. Hi :) thank you so much for this video! I am currently in EMT school and looking at all of my options for the future. I'm doing this course because my main goal is to become a doctor someday but I'm wondering if I want to just continue in the medics route and become a paramedic instead. It's so fascinating and I'm loving it so far! I would LOVE to become a flight surgeon in the Air Force someday and that would be my life goal! So serving in the USAF in the medical field (whether a Dr or a medic) is definitely a dream of mine. You might just influence me into sticking with the paramedic route haha!

I'm finding it kind of confusing and am wondering if it's like an EMT on flight?
@@gisellecervantes7084 Hey! So yes, aeronautical evacuation is very much like being an EMT/LPN on a plane. If you are AE you will be helping to transport severely sick and wounded patients from the battlefield to better care at a military hospital. So for example, a patient injured in Syria or Afghanistan would be stabilized in a field hospital, and then put on a plane to be taken to a base in the USA or Germany for surgery etc. You as an AE 4N0 would be helping the flight doctor, flight nurse, flight PA etc to make sure the patients are stable. You will be checking their vitals, documenting, assisting with any emergency procedures etc. It’s a very cool specialty. It’s to
keep in mind you will need extra training to do AE, including SERE training! I hope this helps clarify things more!

I was just wondering what you would say is the best specification to dive into. i am personally leaning towards paramedic work and working up the chain from there to maybe gain more things like nurse practitioner.
Congratulations and good luck! I would say 4N0 is a great place to start and you can go from there to paramedic and NP! If you can work in the ER of a military hospital I highly recommend it so you can gain emergency experience!
Hello! I’m currently looking into the career field and found your video to be super helpful! I’ve definitely done a fair share of research before your video, but you really hit the nail and made everything a lot more clearer. I’m probably going to talk to my recruiter this upcoming week to see how long I’d have to wait in the DEP if I do. I do have two questions though. How long is tech school as a whole considering you don’t possess a National certification or anything that may help you skip a part of the tech training? Also, do you go immediately to your tech training after BMT or do you have a weekend with friends and family? I ask because I’m married and she hates being lonely haha.

And all of tech school is about 4 months and two weeks from start to finish, not including phase 2! Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck! I really appreciate your video. It’s the only one I’ve found where you already had your EMT. I’ve been nremt licensed for a year now and I run on a ALS ambulance. How much time did you get to cut off of being at tech school?

Are you able to more things than a Paramedic or is a Paramedic a higher level of provider? I'm asking because I'm a EMT and I am VERY INTERESTED in joining the military but I want to know what I will be getting myself into if I go on to do what you do?
Hey! Thank you I appreciate ot! And that’s a great question. Yes there are opportunities to study to be a Nurse, Physician Assistant, or even MD and commission as an officer. Those programs are very competitive (especially the Physician Assistant track). As a medic we can do a lot, but not as much as a paramedic. A paramedic is a higher level of provider in all the branches. You can even become a paramedic if you want! There are lots of options! BUT if you get assigned medic, you have to stay in that job for at least two years before you can switch to something else. Let me know if you have any more questions 👍🏽

I’ve read your other comments that you can achieve LPN through this job which is great, but if I don’t get this job, are there others ways I could work towards my goal other than waiting until my service is done and using my GI bill? Hi there! Thank you! You have some great goals! 4N0 is definitely a great way to go in terms of your goals! No other enlisted job translates as well to you becoming a LPN and then RN. BUT have you considered the HPSP program? The USAF will pay for your BSN in exchange for a service commitment and you can become a commissioned officer! Worth looking into!

Congrats! Phase 2 is like clinical and working in the hospital. No classes or tests but you may have a few classes, and a checklist of skills to get evaluated on. But honestly it’s much easier and more fun than phase 1.

Hey! That’s awesome that you have so many certs! Since you are NREMT certified you will be able to skip over almost two months of tech school! So for guard and reserves, there is a phase 3 in tech school? I thought 98 days was long but adding in additional 40 days seems long. What did you learn in phase 3?
Phase 3 is really a continuation of phase 2, you are practicing what you learned

Hello! So if you are stationed at an Emergency Room at a base, like I am, then YES! You will do 911 emergency calls! But it depends on where you are stationed and what squadron! I hope this helps!

Hello! Yes you can definitely do 4N0X1 if you are 18. Basically it depends on your ASVAB scores. Have you taken the ASVAB yet by any chance? Are you going active duty or guard/reserve?
Say I get in and want to become a nurse while I’m active will they allow time to go to school? Or do I have to wait until I get out?
Hello! So you can apply for the HPSP program where they will pay for you to go to Nursing School. OR you can wait and use your GI Bill to go to school after your active duty time is done! It depends on which route you want to take. As a medic you will have enough school credits to become an LPN, but that is something you will have to do on your own time, to challenge the LPN test. Hope this helps!

Hey brother I’m prior service army going into this afsc what was that phase 3 for guard and reserve you mentioned?
Hey brother, Phase 3 is about a 60 day work period where you get sent to a Air Force base with a VA hospital. You’ll work there and reinforce your medic skills. It’s in addition to Phase 2. Think of it as like 60 days of active duty.
when you move into the dorms for tech school do you share a room or do you have your own room due to COVID?
You do have to share a room with one or two other roommates. They do temperature checks and a ROM (restriction of movement - so you stay on base for two weeks) once you get there as a precaution.

You don’t take another exam, the instructor basically just signs off and you skip that part of tech school 👍🏽

Hello! I am NOT a part of the PJs. That is a separate AFSC that requires about two additional years of training. I have a lot of respect for the PJs. And yes, usually security forces when they are deployed in hostile regions will have their own combat medic deployed with them 👍🏽

Can you join the Air Force requesting this job (after passing MEPS and the getting the right ASVAB score)? Or do you only get this by luck?
Sometimes its possible to get this put in your contract but usually its by luck if your going active duty. But definitely ask your recruiter if any guarantees are available. If you are going Guard or Reserve you will definitely know what your job will be ahead of time.

Hello, yes you do have to take it again but it’s easy, just a few days.

Any certifications really prior to enlisting as a 4NOX1?
How soon/when can you use your TA to complete nursing school? Do you have to serve certain amount of time or reach a certain ranking?
And will they count college credit (prerequisites/ general Ed’s courses) that you already have towards your education? For example; I can already have majority of my prerequisites/ general Ed’s finished to get into nursing school. Will they use those credits so that way I won’t repeat it?
You can use your TA as soon you finish Boot Camp! Are you Guard, Reserve, or Active?
The Air Force has the Air Force Community College where you can get an Associates, and they do usually accept transfer credits 👍🏽

Since you are prior service army yes you will do the same dorms, formation etc. BUT you won’t have to do boot camp over again.
What if you join with a AEMT (EMT-I) or paramedic certification from the civilian side? Are there other opportunities that you know of?
There are limited opportunities for paramedics but being NREMT certified as a paramedic is required man, state level they won’t accept just on it’s own! I would let your recruiter know all your certs. Most paramedics get chosen from among the 4N0s. Are you going active or guard/reserves?
@@caseygrayson2275 Guard or reserves for me. I'm not sure which would offer the most opportunity between the two.
Both offer great opportunities! Definitely research the benefits of the potential state guard unit. So for a paramedic, the guard or reserve unit would need to either create a position for a paramedic or already have an opening. Talk to the recruiter and the commander of the medical squadron and ask! Let them know your qualifications and experience. With some research and leg work you will be able to find out where the best opportunity is!

Hello! The hours vary! But usually in the hospital it is 12 hour shift! It takes about 2 years to get your LPN.

That’s very cool that you are an NREMT paramedic. You would only be able to join as an emt and then you would have to apply for a paramedic opening. Usually you have to do at least a year as a medic (EMT) before you can apply for any paramedic positions.

You can apply right out of highschool yes! But to be a surgeon, you would need to go to medical school. But I know a lot of people who actually became medics, then used their GI Bill to pay for Medical School. This would be a great way for you to gain experience.
Hey there! I've looked into this Air Force option, and am currently a certified EMT. Does that certification carry over at all, or would I be required to redo the NREMT and pyschomotor process?
Hey! That’s great that you are a certified EMT! If you already have you NREMT cert then you show it to them when you get there and you can skip that the written test and classes. You usually do have to redo the psychomotor skills however! Hope this helps! Just make sure you take you’re NREMT certificate and that it’s not expiring in the next 6 months! Hope this helps!

The NREMT renewal is fully provided and paid for by the Air Force every two years! It is usually done in your home unit! I just renewed and it was very straightforward. So they take care of it!

They do run your credit and yes you get secret security clearance!

Great question! Right now, to be able to give the COVID-19 vaccine to other people, like your patients, you have to be vaccinated. It is not required for all medical personnel mainly because all COVID-19 vaccines are under emergency authorization by the federal government. But once the vaccines get fully approved, it probably will become mandatory for all medical personnel in the military to be vaccinated! But things keep changing!
How many people have you seen cross training to this job? I’m currently trying to enlist to the Air Force and my recruiter said that there are not a lot of medical jobs that come by and so that I should just choose a job and then cross train. I have a medical oh experience as a CNA and I’ll have my health science degree but it still says that I will not get this job
Great question. I have seen people cross-train into this job. About 20% of the people in my medic class were cross-training. It IS hard to get approval to do it, but it can be done. Are you going active duty or guard/reserves?

If 4N0 is the job you want it’s worth waiting for. 4N0 jobs do come up. I would be skeptical

Yes you can, but if you are NREMT-P certified you can skip that portion of the training.

@@ranardwarren427 Good question. You will work for at least two years as a regular medic, and then you can apply to the shred out you like. It just depends if there is space/a demand for your chosen shred out. But yes you can choose and apply after two years as a medic!

The minimum ASVAB score you need for this is a 44, so definitely doable for most people!

Hi Samantha! Congratulations on being an AEMT! That’s awesome! I think your chances are very high since being a medic is the 2nd biggest job category in the Air Force. BUT there is no guarantee unless it is listed in your enlistment contract! If you are going active duty it is very hard to get a job guarantee unless it is something like translation, intelligence operations etc. Are you looking at Guard, Reserve, or Active?

Honestly I have not heard anything official on that. From my understanding, job choices are increasing across the Air Force.
Can we take our laptops with us? How long is phase 2? Do you come back home with COVID and then they let know about phase 2? I’m in the reserves.
Yes you can definitely take your laptop to tech school and I recommend it. If you are reserves it depends, but usually they want you to go straight from tech school to Phase 2 like I did. You will know where you are going to for Phase 2 when you finish the EMT portion of tech school for 4N0. Usually two weeks into nursing you will find out. Phase 2 is 40 days, but some places like Eglin it’s 54 because you have to quarantine on arrival for 14 days.

Hi there, I waited 8 months for the Medic position. If you are a nursing major I DEFINITELY recommend that you finish your degree so you can commission as an officer!

@@jacecha2210 I agree with Martin! Finish your BSN and consider even doing the ROTC program so you get paid while you go to school. Nursing is very hands on, and as a Nurse in the Air Force you will still have a lot of hands on experience! 👍🏽
Can you be an officer in this profession? I want to go the officer route but this is my ideal AFSC to be honest.
Unfortunately you can’t be an officer in this AFSC, it’s enlisted only :(. BUT you should consider becoming a nurse or Physician Assistant. Then you can commission as an officer and still work in healthcare!

Great question! Yes I know people who got into Nursing school and became RNs. It’s a great way to commission as an officer as well and get that nice pay bump! You will have to be organized and make sure you take all your prerequisites! Two ways to do it - you can challenge the LPN board after you become a 5 level 4N0, then get your bachelor’s and you can become an RN. Or go right to RN school and skip over being a LPN. You will not become an officer as an LPN only, so I think it’s worth it to go and get your bachelor’s as an RN!
@@caseygrayson2275 Last question to become a level 5 what exactly is required? I’ve been preparing for BMT physically and studying a lot so I possibly have a chance for honor grad. I have been studying anatomy for tech school and just ordered the EMT book. I did want to do physical therapy but if I can become in RN while in the Air Force I will take full advantage.
@@SxCR4WR No problem! 5 levels and 7 levels are just written tests that show you studied your CDCs, which are just material that you study about your profession! You take them whenever you are ready and then you go from Apprentice (level 3) to Journeyman (level 5). CDCs are also useful for gaining rank and advancing. They are not too bad! You will do well! Can you get your paramedic as a 4N0X1? Can you get it in your contract?
Hey there, you can apply to become a paramedic in the civilian side because you will become EMT certified. Unfortunately, not you can’t get paramedic in your contract when starting out. You have to work as a 4N0X1 for at least 2 years in the Air Force and then apply for a paramedic position.
