- PWI: Predominately White Institution
HBCU: Historical Black College or University
Here we discuss some of the differences between PWI's and HBCU's from our own perspective at each institution such as social life, campus climate, dorms, sports, food, greek life, and academics. Let us know if you want us to talk about other topics or go into further detail about anything elseđ

HBCU or PWI it's just awesome to see well spoken and educated black people representing đđœđđœđđœđđœ I'm so proud
Thank youuuu!
He was so accurate with his comment on diversity in a HBCU vs PWI đđŸ Black people come from everywhere
yesssss
Jasmine Thomas don't mean a damn thing about black people coming from every where....same color skin don't make us kin....coloreds(as you call them "black")are the 1st ones trying to drag one another down, both male&female so that statement is worthless...has no value until coloreds treat one another the same way they look up to their white superiors.
"illustrious" you better introduce your institution!!! hahahha
Jesse Woodbury I had to ask Siri wat that meant
Howard needs to sponsor him or something đ
I went to a PWI, and now I wish I wouldâve gone to an HBCU. White is not always right....the Ivys are probably worth it. The list of amazing grads from HBCUs such as Howard, Spelman, and Morehouse are long and plentiful. Looking back, as a Psychology major/ Spanish minor, I would go to college where I was supported (not just constantly having to prove myself and go at it pretty much alone), go to the school that offered me the most money, and NOT have majored in anything humanities/social science -related! Lol Great review. Thanks for sharing! :) And yes our dorms and dining hall were amazing at my PWI :)
HU!! YOU KNOW!!!!
She is ignorant. Most African Americans spent the majority of their studies at PWI's and have had enough of "the real world". FYI, the real world is 2/3 people of color. I went to Cal and by the time I was a Sophomore majoring in Biology, I was ready to transfer because of the negative stigmas associated with being an African American male on campus. No, I'm not an athlete. No, I didn't get in because of Affirmative Action etc. The BSU was a grouping of black kids trying hard to keep it together and it felt like us against them all the time. The meetings and events seemed forced and almost unnatural. It often felt militant. At Howard, their was no dominant opposition or grand campus issues we had to fight against. Mettings (there was no need for a BSU so Frat. , social , community, healthcare, iintramural clubs were relaxed and productive and always fun. I didn't transfer after Soph. year, but finished my DDS at HUCD, and the experience was one of the best if not the best experience of my life! Worked hard and partied with my peers, some of which were genius level individuals. It felt like the home most of us never had and only witnessed on TV with the Cosby show. Most instructors felt like uncles, aunties, and/or nurturing parents. I finally got to feel what white kids feel when they hang out with professors and not only receive information on a course that one is taking but a meaningful nugget of wisdom that is always on point and could possibly change the course of one's life path. The type of information that is withheld in a PWI, or is geared towards white kids. It was great to feel as if a professor, counselor, receptionist, or staff see you as family. Often times seeing themselves in you many years prior and having the perfect formula and advice on how to be successful either through personal success or shortcomings.
Ignorant? I'm sharing my personal experience at UCLA, how is that ignorant? Second, it sounds like you had an amazing experience at Howard! Its unfortunate, that you didn't feel the same at Cal. My personal experience at UCLA has been great and our Afrikan Student Union and African American Studies department feels like home to me. This is MY personal experience. I'm sharing this to help others who are curious about the two schools. Just because we have had two different experiences at PWI's doesn't make either one of us ignorant. Sadly, in "the real world" there is discrimination, white supremacy, and inequality despite the world being 2/3 people of color. I wish the best to you and I hope everything works out for you! Ask questions or try to understand somebody's point of view before coming for me in my comments, thanksđ
Why my guy look like a black John Green???? LMAOOooo
Euel Haile omgđ
I applaude both of your takes on your experiences. I received my BS at a PWI. The experience was great, but believe me, the black pop was small and we stuck together. The Greek network was a good help, but I was active in dance and other clubs first so I had friends of all kind. I received my JD from an HBCU, and that experience was different and I felt I had to adapt, it was "lit", but I didn't get to share in that experience bc my focus was different. I would have been lost at my HBCU if I had went there first. The amenities, I must admit, were better at my PWI. I had to prepare my son as he chose an HBCU. I told him to be ready, because your lifestyle will be different. The dorms and facilities were horrible, but the education is just as good...but he wants to transfer one month into his first year. CULTURE SHOCK!
Thank you for watching! And it's a difference for everybody, I'm glad you got to get both perspectives for yourself!
As a young black woman consider PWIs (Salisbury, Old Dominion, Seton Hall, Albright) and HBCUs (Howard, Spelman, Hampton, Clark, Morgan) I found this video disappointing. Even though I don't attend a HBCU yet, I feel as if she believes a lot of negative stereotypes about HBCUs. Idk.
Thanks for your feedback. However, I personally think Howard and other HBCU's are great schools. My first choice was actually an HBCU. This video is expressing our own opinions. Feel free to do more research.
Jo Stevens the hbcus that you mention I have a ton of friends that attended and graduated from them and we are like at a FAMILY REUNION ( The O'JAYS, JILL Scott, Gerald Levert, Sister Sledge) when we are together!!!
Where did you end up going? (Also Im currently at ODU!)
TBH I'm going to be Sophomore in HS đđ but my sister going to college this and honestly I just love watching videos like these are so awesome and cool to learn about
Plus see young educated black students makes it even better and I want to be apart of when I go to college
You can never start thinking about college too early! It's great that you love watching these types of videos, you'll be prepared when its your time! Thank you for supporting!
Best PWI Vs. HBCU video Iâve come across on Yt yet đ well organized, spoken, informed, well represented !
Thank you so much!!
Totally off topic but when he turns his head to the side he looks like Kyle from 'Living Single '
Ashley B yooooo thatâs who he reminded me of
Lmaooo I never thought of this but I can see it!
HBCU Pride #RustCollege
I canât the way he turned his head towards you was funny đđ
Lol my brother is funny, love him so muchđ
Five years deep & it's my first time, watching you guys. Both of ya'll were really informative & interesting. So much thanks from ATP here in Ln, in the UK đâđŸ
Thank you for watching!! We wish you the best!
Im so proud i might go to a HBCU
Love it!
nonblack person here just getting some insight. well done!
ps: Go Bruins!! I'll be joining the family next fall!!
Thank you for supporting! And congrats!!!
HU is also a D1 sports program. Not as large as UCLA obviously, but D1 nonetheless
Yes, thank you!
She is pretty
I loved this video it was so good
Thank you for watching!
This was awesome! Currently deciding between the University of Dayton and Tennessee State.
Dayton is Catholic be careful sis
Zakariah1971 whats wrong with catholicism? Please tell me, i like hearing perspectives
His hair is so cool
This video is such a disappointment. Rather than debate the differences between an HBCU and PWI, I would have appreciated you all talking about why you chose the University you chose and the impact it has had on your leadership development. I am a proud HBCU alum of Virginia State University who is prideful of my Florida State University Master's Degree and University of Southern California Doctoral degree...all of these experiences have shaped my life, but I would never disrespect any of the schools. Please do more research and don't fall into the trap of downing HBCU's. You both are too intelligent to take part in this type of slander.
I don't understand why you're disappointed but thank you for your feedback. My brother and I were giving recollections of our personal experiences at each school. We're not trying to put any school down or be negative, just expressing how we feel. Glad your proud of your accomplishments, I hope to continue my higher education to my doctorate degree as well!
I've talked about my decision to go to UCLA and how it has helped me grow in these videos. Feel free to take a look:

DonnaMac personally i wouldnât goto an hbcu cause i wouldnât want to be around a bunch of other black people. I know that sounds bad but itâs not meant that way I promise Iâd rather goto a school thatâs a PWI just for the more broad range of ethnic diversity and cultures. Iâm not downplaying that hbcus have ethnics diversity. But thatâs only like majority black wise, I wanna go where the diversity is more than just black wise. This sounds stupid but I want to deal with the ignorance other people have about blacks so I can correct them and put them in their place. Iâm planning to attend UCLA and Iâm prepared to deal with cultural ignorance
As a grad from Howard and currently attending USC for grad school, if anyone has any questions from someone with both perspectives, I'm open to answer questions.
darkwriterxx94 hi I am a junior in high school and both USC and Howard are on my college list if you could just talk about your experience at both colleges that would be really helpful
Ik you posted this a long time ago but I have some questions about your experiences aswell
Come on my people we need more stem degrees.
We need degrees of all kind. Education should be valued no matter what your studying!
Owner of this channel is beautiful asf! đđđ
Aww thank youuu
So Howard it is... Thanx !
I'm currently at a PWI and I'm deciding between transferring to a neighboring HBCU, the illustrious North Carolina A&T State University for Meteorology, or UNC Charlotte. Both are amazing schools, but my fear is that I'm not going to fit in at an HBCU (personality clashes). How did you manage to fit in at an HBCU?
You shouldn't worry about fitting in! As long as you are true to yourself that right people will be attracted to you!
Black people are not a monolith, youll find plenty of people just like you
the other comments are important but also use going to a hbcu to learn you true culture
I'm curious as to what you chose
@Ashok Hegde which did you attend to qualify you to make this assessment? Please have several seats!
Well...UCLA is almost a P.A.I....Predominately Asian Institution.....so right of the bat, the comparison is off.....but I'll watch till lol
Ghana Mafia But faculty and the surrounding area are predominantly white so the campus atmosphere is highly influenced by that.
+Adebisi Akilo what about UCR or UCI? Also, is it faculty as a whole or within a specific college?
UCLA!
ALL DAY
OT You are so Beautiful.
Are you guys twins? P.s. loved the video
He's two years older than me lol. Thank you!
I'm a graduate from Howard University and all my family went to a HBCU school and I ask myself why go somewhere you have prove yourself all the time that can be exhausted. Come home HBCU. ..
The football game is a social experience.
I hear "I don't want to get blacklisted" on every video about college. WHAT DOES IT MEANđ
It's 2022 how has your degree from the respective institution been beneficial or detrimental.
Great question.
I graduated in 2019 and currently run my own business as a full time content creator and social media manger. UCLA connected me to phenomenal individuals, students, alumni, and faculty who have supported me along my journey. Overall, I'm grateful for my experience at UCLA and believe it has been beneficial in a number of ways.
My brother graduated Howard in 2018 and earned a Master's from the University of Chicago in 2020. He is currently in a dual PhD program at the University of Michigan studying economics and policy. He's received several great internships and scholarship opportunities. His experience at Howard, as well as classmates and professors have supported him along his professional journey.
We have both had great experiences, as well as bittersweet moments at our institutions. We both give glory to God for all the success and amazing opportunities we've had throughout our life. Would love to make an update video with my brother to go into further detail soon.
What hair gel do you use ?
Eco Styler
Dope!!! Check out our web series, as well as our college tour!
UM EXCUSE ME...WHAT IS THIS I HEAR ABOUT SOCIOLOGY AND NOT BROADCAST OR FILM?!
LOL! I have to apply for those majors! UCLA version of broadcast is Communications and you're girl just found out she got in two days after I filmed this video!!! So I will be double majoring đ
HU!!
African-American population at UCLA is only 4% as, you see how this sistah socially engineer her statements in how her school functions
Ashok Hegde California schools arenât allowed to use affirmative action. Look it up
Ashok Hegde no stupid, the only explanation is that UCLA is a public university. In other words, it has a commitment to all students in the state. At the end of the day, at every public university you will have good and bad instate students. If you really think affirmative action is there, why wouldnât they just accept more black students to up diversity?
Ashok Hegde i mean at least the black people who get into UCLA still get into the school even if it is affirmative action đ€·đŸââïž
Ashok Hegde have you ever tried to put together that some black students just donât want to goto UCLA ? They probably get admitted but choose not to go you never know. They could have more black people if more black students chose to go. They have a person over African American recruitment but most likely because they want more black students and more diversity. UCLA has been actively trying to get more black students but they get turned down a lot of the time
Kody Bland my point is she needs to help others get in
What sorority??
so basically- at PWI its nice physical atmosphere, more ignorant ass bigot, racist and insensitive comments thrown at u- than a little bit, food is good.
at hbcu its rich culture, but still lots of misunderstanding from those trying to identify what it means to be black... and the food is- takeout.
My daughter attends UCLA.
I hope she likes it! #GoBruins
You Did not mention the band that's the difference.
yea, there are black people from the hood, there are black people from the suburbs, black people from the carbbians, black people from Africa, but bottom line they are all black. Very few Latino, Asian, or White in Howard.
Eazy But is that a bad thing?
Latino is not a race, my mom is black cuban and would be classified as Hispanic Idiot... And we are just as black as any black american
Realtalk MyBrother technically youâre mixed right ?
TNT... was your nose stopped up during this video? :)
sure was lol
Hey, Hope we can support each other.
I never had rats and roaches in my room. But I've seen rats on the streets in DC.
UMM, WHY ARE YOU ALL COMPARING A PWI WITH A MULTI BILLION DOLLAR ENDOWMENT, WITH ANY HBCU? YOU HAVE TO COMPARE, COMPARABLE INSTITUTIONS.
I get where you're coming from. The point of the video is to help people make more informed decisions on what university to go to when they are trying to make a choice. Overall, we want to encourage Black scholars no matter what institution they attend. Thank you for watching!
Are you two family, dating, whose house? Good video presentation but girl u r congested like crazy...
Not true about Howard
Another hellenized sista... Smh
I beat u you no black guy at Howard is willing to learn how cook. They except the woman to cook and clean, I learned that from most black men, from where ever they are from. Haiti, Jamaica, America, Africa, even England.
Howard University build Executive Black men for the Corporate world; or even branch him into his own business. A PWI would make a servant black man for the Corporate world. HBCU's is up and personal, and with hands on approach to the game. PWI's is like the crabs in the bucket for young, black males. the ONLY BENEFIT THEY GET is the quality of the school's name. I've seen it numerous of times. Look at the image of P.Diddy for example. And compare that to black men who made THEIR OWN money graduating from a PWI.
UC is a horrible experience for Jews. Pass if at all possible...
