  • The King’s speech on D-Day, June 6th 1944.
This is the oldest radio in my collection, the Bush SW43 dating to 1937. The radio is in full working order, having had all of the usual capacitors changed. However, at some point in it's long history this set, which has a walnut case, has had a modification with the output valve type having been charged.
The Bush SW43 is a five valve (including the full wave rectifier which is not visible in my image) super heterodyne AC mains receiver. In original configuration it boasted a high power (for the day) Mullard PENB4 output valve and a Rola electro magnetic dynamic loudspeaker.
In 1937 this set cost 12 Guineas, which is the equivalent of about £1070 in 2024. Hence a set of this type was a huge investment, and as such out of the reach of the majority of the UK population.
