I found the original LP release and bought it without having any idea what I was about to get into. Only buying it because it seemed vaguely avant-garde, was pretty cheap, and the pictures of Bley, Mantler and the Orchestra seemed quite intriguing to me. Obviously I was blown away, and further research lead me to Escalator over the Hill, the ultimate mindfuck and now my favourite album of all time.

A great piece of avantgarde jazz, very impressive, powerful, and deeply moving. One of Carla Bley’s masterpieces. I have the original LP since more than 30 years and still regularly listen to it and enjoy it. A piece from former times when musicians were highly creative and had ideas to compose pieces as long and complex as this one, and not just computer-generated 3-minutes-disco-clips. Fans of classical music may excuse my comparison but the up and down in tempo, dynamics, loudness, and instrumentalization always reminds me to Smetana’s classical masterpiece ``The Moldau´´. A thousand times more people should listen to this masterpiece!

I didn't know (Makanda) Ken McIntyre played the Baritone Saxophone or bassoon (although he is a multi-instrumentalist). His discography appears to be missing this recording with the Michael Mantler/Carla Bley orchestra.

This is such a tasty piece. It is clearly strongly inspired by Gamelan and/or other Indonesian music forms.

Here is the review from Record World magazine, 01-03-1976.
    13 & 3/4 MICHAEL MANTLER/CARLA BLEY - Walt 3
Mantler and Bley are at the forefront of
the avant garde classical/jazz ranks. Their
music is obviously not always the most
accessible, but even for the serious minded
pop enthusiast there is much to
be gained from repeated listening. Textures,
    dynamics, tonality and rhythms are
basic. Both works are grandly executed.
