    In this video I talk about how many watermelons to grow per plant. This question is a one that I get a lot. If they grower wants many melons then the answer I give is to let one melon per vine. This means if there are 5 vines then let the plant have 5 melons on the plant. The backyard farmer has the advantage to do this because they don't have large fields of watermelons. The melons will be smaller because it takes a lot of energy to produce this fruit. Now if the backyard grower wants to have larger melons they will need to prune the fruits or vines. I suggest going down to 2 melons per plant. I would let 2 vines carry 1 melon on each. The melons will definitely grow to a larger size. The last category is growing large melons for competition. These growers will grow one melon per plant. This will ensure that the melons grow to their max size. If backyard growers fertilize like farmers who grow large fields of melons, will not have to prune their melons.

      Marigold releases a scent in the soil that drives pest away.

    First time I grew the Crimson Sweet variety, ( those are 35 lb melons on average) I didn't know you had to prune them. I used chicken manure for fertilizer, and man! I had vines for 2 blocks. The vines were growing up my fence into the neighbor's yard.... I had a lot of watermelons but they were smaller and the flavor and sweetness was lacking. Watermelons are heavy feeders, and I fertilize them every two weeks..Going for the sugar babies this year...Thanks Bear.

      I, too, am trying my hand at growing melons. My husband just found this video for me, and we watched it. I am new at this and have multiple plants in one pot, about 4-7 inches tall. My challenge will be getting them all out without damaging the roots and plants, then transferring them to the ground. Any suggestions?

    • @GrowSomethingTasty
      @GrowSomethingTasty  Před dnem

      @patrese1hopkins451 I think some of the roots will get damaged. The roots are mostly likely entangled. You can try taking the entire soil out of the container and get the water hose, and wash the soil away gently until the soil is gone and remove them that way. The other option is just to grab the soil and break them up that way.

    Appreciate you sharing with the info. I been staying with your vidz on the channel. Good content , good tips and good energy! Im fixing to put down an acre of melons after a few years of experimenting with a smaller patch on my soil. Im in central flroida and have this ole surgar sand soli here but these melons love it. I use fish fertilizer and water that in by hand. Ive found it safe enough to fertilize over the leaves if i water the crop directly after basically washing off the leaves. My 1 acre crop im using drip hose to the main stock vine. Basically your advice has got me to the point im at now and everything is going smooth. For pest im raking up all this spearment that grows on the south side of my property and spreading it around. No worms.

    A vacuum cleaner works for squash bugs. Also soap spray will kill them. Removes the protective oil from their bodies and causes them to drown from the water. Use the extra strength (extra degreasing kind) like Dawn 4X. And mix it fairly strong.

  • @krane15

    Good news and bad news if anybody wants to grow watermelons. Watermelons are arguably the hardest crop to grow. The good new is that if you accomplish it, you can give yourself a a pat on the back and consider it a major accomplishment. The biggest Carolina cross I grew was a paltry 80. A big watermelon, but small for a CC. I had much better luck growing cantaloupe which is a cake walk compared to watermelons. They can all but grow by themselves.
    BTW, the mites are there. You can see the squiggly lines snaking across a few of the leaves near the base of the plant. You can use all natural pest killers such as insecticidal soap so long as you do it early. If you have a bad infestation, you might have to use chemical pesticides. If you must so, do it as early in the growing season, before the fruit starts to grown. Unfortunately, that's typically when the pests come.
    You really need to check the plants every single day for pests since if they get a chance to multiply, you will likely lose your entire crop. When it comes to melons, most of the evil bugger live underneath the leave.

    • @GrowSomethingTasty
      @GrowSomethingTasty  Před měsícem

      HEY, Krane!!! It is awesome that you grew an 80-pound melon. I want to grow one of those. The rabbits ate the melon plant. I check the leaves bout when thru grow all over. I can't check all of them. I'm worried I might break some vines.

      HELLO Billy, do you have flowers? If so, it could be that you don't have any pollinators. I would plant flowers by to bring in the bees. You can hand pollinate the flowers to make sure you have pollination. If you don't have flowers, there could be a nutrient imbalance. Too much nitrogen will encourage green growth and barely any flowering. Watermelons love full sun, make sure it has that. Thanks for watching and commenting.
