Its fun to see this great song being appreciated 30+ years later! Steely Dan made musicians do their homework. As did the Allman Brothers, I was there on the East Coast.

Super helpful lesson Keith. I've been playing guitar for about as long as Steely Dan has been around.( Kind of gave my age where there, didn't I ).
But I never played Steely Dan's Music. As much as I love them, I always thought it was just too hard to learn. But now after watching your lesson I'm going to start working on it. I'm an old dog but I'm not afraid to learn a nrw trick. Excellent lesson and you're so young to be loving such a great old group. That just goes to show you the music transcends time and age. Keep up the good work and I'm going keep following your lessons.

    D Mu major xx0252
    Arpeggiated 432123
    A Mu major x0242x
    Arpeggiated 543234
    E Mu major 024100
    Arpeggiated 6543123
Steely Dan used Mu major chords in many of their songs. As soon as you hear hear them ring, you know you’ve got it.
Mu major chords are played by taking the root tonic and where that same note repeats in the chord, move it up 2 half steps.
    Example D chord xxDADF#
    D Mu major xxDAEF#

No need to apologize for being hooked on "Steely Dan" music. You are showing a high level of musical maturity. Steely Dan's arrangements and lyrics were above and beyond the typical pop hits. I have been a full time guitar player for nearly 40 years and still see "Steely Dan" as one of a musicians, musician type band. Great job on the lesson! 👍🏼🎶

Very talented young man...patiënt and thorough in explaining this song. I would never thought of trying this one out back in the "70's. To try and cover Steely Dan was something too difficult to even considder, so one just didn't.

Super helpful. Thanks! It knocks me out how many "normal" chords the Dan uses. When I was a kid I imagined they commissioned a secret chord foundry to invent one of a kind chords for them and it was impossible to figure them out! Great job.

Michael Marko - I would totally agree with you about a secret chord foundry to invent one of a kind chords...lol! I would listen to these songs in my teens as a newbie guitar player and could not imagine how they were getting those open, spacey type chords. Classy arrangements and great lyrics. I grew up in the 70's, been playing professionally for almost 40 years, and still think the best music, including Rock, Pop, Disco and Jazz came from the 60's-70's!

Becker/Fagen once remarked comically/sarcastically in an interview that people seemed to think they invented jazz chords. Well to me they made inventive melodies on top of creative jazzy/Latin grooves. No one else in rock really wrote with that level of sophistication. For much of country/rock, simplicity was charming but not as adventurous sonically. Where they got their aesthetic is a mystery but putting jazzy chords in melodic pop had to have really begun with the Beatles and Beach Boys some times. The ability to take interesting jazzy chords and pluck a catchy melody was pure genius on the part of Fagen.

The chord is a Mu Major. It’s Root-2nd-3rd-5th. It’s not a Major 9, or add9 chord. You need the dissonances between root abs 2nd.
