Fish and chips! Once I went a bit mad there and had dressed crab, it was sensational. Art on a plate. And the gift shops are brilliant, with the usual seaside ornanents, little boats, figures of fishermen, etc; then stuff for fans of Heartbeat, toy police cars, photos of the cast, 60s style stuff; all side by side with skeletons, tombstones, pentacles and bats for the Goths and Dracula fans.
Love it, my ma does this. She spews off a string of romantic childhood remembrance, peppered with horrid famial secrets l never needed to know. "Oh thats your great uncle Jack, quite the man, lived longer than anyone in the family. Killed his first wife and got away with it y'know, he once was awarded a certificate from the mayor because he saved a girl from drowning...."
This is such a universal experience. I'm from Sri Lanka and my dad said he had to cut through the forest to get to school, both ways! And there was always a hill to climb and each time he'd tell the story, it would get steeper. LOL
That was more of a boomer or silent gen thing. GenX and millennials are the parents now. We got dropped off or had to catch a bus no different to zoomers

@@timothywelke2047 - If you are going to northern England you will almost certainly go to York, York is a Roman, Viking and Medieval city that literally still has medieval buildings, and a Medieval city wall around it you can walk on. Whitby is about 1 hour drive. Its 45 miles. England is really small and it is utterly packed with stuff. 100 miles north of Whitby is Alnwick Castle and thats Hogwarts from Harry Potter. When you get to Scotland the distances start getting a lot bigger and the roads smaller but the scenery is astonishing. The stately homes in England are utterly amazing, they are run by The National Trust - the sort of thing yo usee in Downton Abby. If you search Google for Castle Howard - that is 50 miles from Whitby. I hope you get chance to visit - unfortunately, the US has an absolutely terrible government at the moment, but they have not yet privatised the countryside or the castles LOL.

North yorkshires a fairly large tourist area if you like countryside though, has lots of fishing villages and towns like this up the coast (ravenscar, robin hoods bay, whitby, saltburn) then you just have Northumberland to go through which has some other nice beaches and castles but nout id stop around weeks to see before scotland. Id go to york, get the steam train to whitby then the normal all train up to scotland, wearing a blindfold while passing through middlesborough
@@timothywelke2047, if you visit York (which I highly recommend you do) then you could get the Coastliner bus from there to Whitby which takes just over two hours and passes through some pretty countryside. York is the stop on the train half way between London and Edinburgh.
This is very funny, but in reality I love when people do this to me (not necessarily parents, also friends). It makes you know them better and deeper and it also gives a beautiful meaning to places which would otherwise have had none.

My grandad in France always gives us a tour of the village every time we come, after we've been in the car from the airport. Every single year its just the same, and it doesn't matter if it's pitch black outside and we can't see anything, we have to be shown everything

My parents to this day claim that when they were kids which was in the 1950s and 1960s a 99 ice cream cost 99p. That would inflation adjusted be around £19 in todays money and it doesn't matter how much I explain it. They still claim it.
