I bought a 1290 Superdake back in Sepember 23. As i pulled away from the dealer my engine management light came on. I took it back and they cleared it down. I left again and it happened again. They took it back and said it was an exhaust sensor. It took a month for them to do the work and I got 10 miles down the road and it happened again, so I asked them to swap it for a brand new one. After a lot of back and forth they did it and this one has been great. I would say not to except any excuses and ask for a new bike.

I had a 1090 Adventure for 3 years, awesome bike, loved it. And then, after a dealer service, rode home then it wouldn't start next time out. Dealer picked it up and after about 7 weeks, finally decided it was a fuel pump issue, ffs. Managed to fix it with a service kit but I still ended up with an almost £500 bill. Totally lost confidence in the brand and dealer competence, so sold it. Dealer since closed down, wonder why. Came to realise I don't need 125hp so now enjoying an Interceptor 650 and a CB500X.

The joys of KTM ownership .... great when they work well, but all too often something goes wrong. I bought a brand new 790 Duke in 2019 ... after the 14 mile ride home from the dealership it was leaking oil from the countershaft seal and that was just the start.
Took 3 warranty claims to get that sorted, then it developed a leak from the valve cover which took a further 3 warranty claims to get properly fixed, the front brake master cylinder developed stress cracks and had to be changed out under warranty and the rear shocks damping circuit failed so the whole shock got replaced for new under warranty .... that was 8 claims within the first 18 months. Sure it all got sorted without any financial cost to me apart from fuel, time spent repeatedly visiting the dealership and the hassle in general. Buying a KTM is a big gamble ... you might get a golden example with no issues but chances are you'll get some of, if not all of, the common ones. And then there's the failing camshaft issue which is a whole other ball game. Needless to say I no longer have the Duke - defected back to japanese bikes which prove to be a lot more reliable in general. I had more issues with the 790 than all of the 6 Japanese bikes I've owned combined!!

Sorry to hear Katie’s issues pal . The more riders expect from bikes the more nonsense the manufacturers feel obliged to build into the next model. Too many Damn sensors that’s the issue. It only takes one to start shitting itself and the rest want in on the act too. Old bikes have mechanical wear and tear. New ones suffer from more serious issues as you can’t see what’s wrong with them. Sadly simplicity is best. Let’s hope it sorts itself out and stays sorted. She’s a cracking bike. You’ll get there 👍

Three of us have just recently returned from a trip to the Pyrenees, all on 1290 super adventure s. My bike had been to the dealership a week before the trip. For warranty work. lambda sensor replacement. The morning of the trip, I probably didn't even get 10 miles away from my home before the engine management came back on again. The engine management light would frequently come on and off throughout our trip. Likewise with the other two bikes. In fact, one of the bikes had a full meltdown. all electronic aids and features, radar cruise control etc stopped working. After a lunch stop, we returned to the bikes, and everything had reset back to normal. I have owned this bike from new for just over two years, and it's always been the same, blasted engine management light. Most of the time there's nothing wrong with it. And all the dealers do is reset the error codes. But apart from the engine management light, (Probably just got used to seeing it) I really enjoy the bike. Maybe I'll just cover it up with some black electrical tape.😂🤣

There are so many interlinked systems, and you, the owner, can't do anything about 'faults', unless you're a computer nerd, as the dealers are the only ones with the systems / software to access and clear the errors. I have just had this with my five year old car (doesn't matter what model or manufacturer). It has taken three months.... It went away after 10mins but I had a look at it when I got back to the dealer and the disc had pronounced heat discolouring on it, the bike only had 1400km on it. It's less stable in turns then the strom and surprisingly the front breaks have very little initial bite and not much feedback. I guess those are things one can get use too but the strom is just better at those two. Both bikes I tested were new btw. Yeah the 1290 accelerates like a bat out of hell but under 150 kph, the difference is not that big between them. And again, legal speeds are a thing :) The 2023 strom 1050 I think it has all it needs (on top of everything it inhereted from the previous gen), quick shifter up/down with blipper, cruise control from 2nd gear and 2000 RPM up, nice looking and readable LCD display. It lacks fancy electronic suspension true, but that doesn't bother me. The KTM has a very usefull adjustable while riding windshield and it's weight is distributed lower because of the shape of the fuel tank. Where I am the 1290 is 50% more expensive and if there's a chance of gremlins ... yeah, is it really worth it ?

Had the same issue on my 3 year old 1290 Superduke GT due to a deteriorating (not flat) battery. These bikes are insanely sensitive to voltage change. For the engine management light (ECU Failure) the ECU needs to go through between 3 & 5 successful diagnostic cycles (on/engine running/off) before it clears. You've still managed more than I did on my new 1290 SAS though. That didn't last a week! I've got a Duke 125, 21 plate. It had 3000 miles on the clock when I bought it and it has a low oil pressure light come on at 4500 revs when the engine temp is 4 bar. I've changed the pressure sensor and given it an oil change, filters etc and it still keeps doing it, after months of research I still can't work it out. I've done 2000 miles since I got it so it's probably electrical or it would have gone bang by now. I forked out a lot of money to not have any problems and it has been nothing but. I'm obviously a new rider and I can't concentrate properly cause I'm always waiting for the light to come on. I'll probably never buy KTM again.

Had an 2018 SA1290R until 2021 - no issues at all. Got a 2021 SA1290S new. Lots of electrical issues- stuff would be disabled on start up (with loads of error messages like you are getting) sometimes with engine management light sometimes without - and also during rides. Very annoying and frustrating - eventually the dealer cleared out and reloaded/upgraded all the management software and that seemed to fix it (but that was after a year). After two years traded it in for something else with less tech and a four year warranty (I know the KTMs come with that now). Also got something with less power as I felt it was rather bored with the type of riding I do - TBH despite all the issues I do rather miss it! I won’t talk about the depreciation.

I leave mine on trickle charge and dont have the pre load issue... battery slightly low and pre load comes on... if on the center stand and running, some have put it in gear to oil chain, this will set off the engine light, after 3 rides it will clear.. not saying these are your issues but what I have seen.. had my 1290 since 2021 no issues apart from pre load when battery just a little lower than optimal, had 1190 for 6 years no issues...

I think it is a matter of some values, or I should say desires of why you buy a particular bike from particular manufacturer. What was the reason why you bought this bike? Is it looks, specs, speed? I considered for a long time what bikes to buy and I went practical. Honda for commuting and Triumph Tiger for travelling. Both are extremely reliable. Both give great satisfaction from riding. Never on my rides in Alps, Pyrenees, Italian country side etc I was over taken by any GS or KTM. There are speed limitations in many shapes and forms and you would not use 170 or so BHP (bad road, rain, police cameras, sand on the road etc.). I do not hate KTM, but from practical perspective - they are expensive problems on the wheels. 100bhp gives more than enough adrenaline on tied roads I bed if somebody is not a professional racer would not over take a good rider on bikes like Tiger 900, Husqvarna Norden 901 and similar. So I did not see the point of getting a KTM at all. The mentioned bikes are also comfortable and fun to ride. But if you value the brand tag more than reliability and all what I mentioned above its fine, it is individual choice. But it is a shame that your chosen brand leaves you with this problems.

Hi pal. Superduke GT owner, bought in June 2023. My dealership closed down so when I got the Christmas tree lights on my dash I've had to take it elsewhere. First time it happened was in Scotland on a tour with friends, got cornering light unit failure which came on and disappeared frequently, so the ECM/ECU shit itself and gave me mtc, suspension failure, cornering abs, normal abs, general failure and all sorts but beyond that it went into limp mode. Still 100 horses but not nice when you're enjoying the ride for you to lose almost half the power. Then the whole dash started flashing with errors plus the full beam began randomly flashing as I was riding. Worked fine the next day, and after the first ride to fill up, one off and on cycle, the engine light disappeared. Great run. On the run home it started again on the motorway, and at one point the throttle stopped responding which is no fun. Came back again a second later. Thought it was fixed (dealership swapped the right hand switchgear, apparently that was giving some grief) but it's started again. Went out yesterday to see how it was and coming out of a sharp right hand bend while at full lean, the throttle again didn't respond. Decided to come home to change my pants. Went for an overtake on a long straight road and it went again, absolutely no response. I'm livid. Going back again, so will see what happens. I don't trust it any more. Sorry to read you're getting rid of yours. The days mine works, it's a dream bike. I just don't know when it's going to work. What use is a GT that you can't tour on?

Ive had 2 1290 GT's. Had no real issues in 50K miles. I always carried a download OBD reader. Its the size of a cigarette box and will clear all faults. I stalled mine filling up for the ferry and got an engine light and limp mode at start of a 3000 mile trip. I stopped and cleared the memory. All was good after that. You really need one if you have a KTM. Got mine off eBay years ago. They throw loads of shit codes up. it doesn't bother me, as I work on Italian helicopters. They do throw codes!!!

Well it seems all manufactures have issues. My Triumph 765 lasted three months before electrics killed it. Ended up getting full refund from dealer who were great - Triumph HQ not so and could;nt fix the fault. Current new bike BMWR1250 RS also has an issue with the SOS system - a known fault apparently when I went to the dealer and BMW are looking to "hopefully" deliver a software update in July - Ive just been told to ignore that amber warning triangle on the TFT screen .......a new bike should be 100% from the off but it seems new tech added every year means increasing issues.....

Hi. I totally get your frustration.
Last thing you need on a new bike is errors appearing.
I own two KTM’s 1290 SDR and 690 SMCR. They’ve been pretty error free apart from the rhs switch gear pooping itself after riding the 1290 in heavy rain. That got swapped out and sorted via the warranty.
I’ve also been told by a KTM tech that the 1290 is very precious when it comes to battery voltage. If the battery is slightly low it throws up all sorts of false error codes. Not saying this is the case with yours but something to know. Also here’s a vid I did of resetting the engine light yourself.
Again it probably won’t fix your issue but handy to know.
