  • I was recently asked what was the most expensive part of traveling, and well it depends on where you go, how many people are going, and what you want to do while you are there.

My flights to Europe used to be $800-$1200 but the last couple years they’ve been up and up. Granted I fly out of a smaller commuter airport with multiple connections. This year Greece was in the $2300-$2600 range. I’ve been using vouchers and such to fly to bigger US airports to leave from. It takes much longer, especially with chronic cancellations, but it saves more than $1000.

For me, it’s simple math. If I crunch the numbers for an average travel vacation day, it’s not that bad at all. But then when I add up the numbers for three, four, or seven weeks … suddenly the total becomes astronomical. In a sense, my biggest travel expense is time.

If you have a set amount of time to allocate for travel, make each trip long because you're using the same number of hotel nights as several shorter trips, but taking fewer flights. Flying to 1 or 2 places on a single trip is 2 or 3 flights, respectively. Flying to 3 places as separate trips from home is 6 flights. Bonus: better for the environment, too.

If you rent a car in Europe, expect to pay. The rental agencies also sneak in hidden costs that are not advertised on line when you initiate the rental. I now try to stick with public transportation as much as possible, and save the car rental for getting into the countryside where public transport is non existent. Agree about the hotels. Airbnb is not as cost effective as it used to be and then they tack on cleaning charges and expect me to clean up before I leave. I try to stick with small hotels and inns especially if I can get a breakfast thrown in. Flight cost does not bother me as much because I rationalize and distribute the flight cost over the duration of the trip. The longer I stay, the lower the per day cost of the flight.

I think one reason why people assume food costs a lot when they travel, especially in europe, because as you pointed out in your other videos I think a lot of people only eat at touristy locations, with views of the Colosseum. But as a savvy travelers all know right around the corner there is a local place that's way cheaper to restaurants in the States.
As for flights, I feel kind of Lucky living on the East Coast because I get to fly Aer lingus for around $800 round trip - $400 each way. That is a tip to anyone out there too, that was flying from the US usually the European airlines are cheaper than any of the American airlines. Also, on my trip back from Vienna last year, I was flying Aer lingus, and while waiting at the Dublin Airport for the flight back to Hartford there was a family sitting next to me who was from Chicago who took the train down to Hartford because of the cheap flights to Europe.

I recently took a road trip to small, unfancy Coloraddo mountain town. I spent about the same amount between gas, food, and lodging, with the lodging being about $600 of that $900. Families get a lot more value with roadtrips because of no flight expenses and still one lodging cost.
If you travel separately and meet a friend, that tends to be a good time to knock out pricier areas. Splitting lodging and even a rental car
