You'd rather travel broke than not travel at all. The money can come later, believe me. The time won't. I've covered around 10 countries when I was under 25. Today, life got busy so needs a lot more planning.
My biggest budget tip: don't eat out at sit-down restaurants for every meal! Enjoy a few, but also have the local street food, check out bakeries and cheaper eats - and grocery shopping in a foreign country is always an adventure.
Another tip: RED EYE flights. some of us dont have a lot of PTO, so I will work all day at work and take the Red eye flight and sleep on the plane at night. I get a full day of pay and use zero PTO for that day. Also some jobs offer flex hours. So on occasion I will work 4-ten hour days before a trip to get that extra day off to conserve PTO for when I will need it.

Yeah this is good advice for everyone, not just broke college students. Even when you have money it’s best to book and tell friends your dates. If you wait for everyone else to book, then you will be waiting all your life
And friends can be incredibly flakey, letting you know that they have decided to remodel the bathroom instead. Makes you reconsider the value of the friendship.

Yes! I'd wanted to go to Scotland for years so when I was 25, I booked a tour and didn't even let any of my friends know until everything was final and my trip was like, two weeks out. It was great because I met a bunch of great people on the tour (there were three other single women around the same age, so the four of us hung out all week) and got to see everything I wanted to, without having to worry about anyone else. It was amazing! Now that I'm in my forties and married with kids, there are trips that my family will take with other people, and trips that we do by ourselves when we don't want to be on someone else's schedule.
F*cking right.I'd never go anywhere if I waited for people to go with me. In fact at this stage I don't even WANT anybody to go with me.
Not waiting for other people is key! You learn so much about yourself when traveling alone and at your own pace. Just go you have video chat if you need to see a familiar face
I can remember my first trip to Europe on my own. I was 21 and it was 1973. I didn't have money to waste so I got a 1st Class Eurail pass over here before I left. Took along my Europe on $5/day book and I was off. Back then nobody traveled 1st class except people with passes, English people and the occasional European. If you were alone in the compartment the seats all pulled out and made a huge king+ sized bed. I used the train many times as my "hotel for the night", would get in a city early morning and immediately book my exit train ride to another destination that took an overnight train. I had no schedule so it didn't matter where I went each day. I eventually saw everything I wanted over the month I was there. I'm sure there are some books still like that Europe on $5/day book but I no longer need them.

Wow! Congratulations. I want to do that, all over the world! I'm in my 50's and almost always broke. I've traveled to several countries.
Hostels saved my butt when I was in my early 20's and I still use them as a budget traveler in my early to mid 30's now. They're absolutely amazing as a traveler who's not concerned with creature comforts.
There are many very well run and comfortable hostels though. Some even have private double bed that is much cheaper than hotel. Yay for hostels!
Another tip might be to plan early. If you wait until the last minute you could be paying 50% more.

I always travel alone, I do whatever I want whenever I want. I take an Interrail pass and take off for 2 or 3 weeks having only planned half of it. Adventure !!!! Being broke definitely makes things interesting at times but it always ends up with (more or less) funny stories to tell.

Wyndham has a good points program ... After roadtripping and booking hotels with that chain, I went to see "Spamalot" on Broadway and booked a 700$ room for free at The New-Yorker for free ... and I did it twice in the same summer because I brought my daughter for her first time in NYC in the same hotel.

I live in Switzerland and yees, it's expensive - even for us 😅. If your planning to travel here by train, please leave your big suitcases at home or get a taxi when you arrive. There's not much room for big luggage on the train and a you probably need to carry it yourself on the stairs, so you better be able to lift it 😅 Our trains have been blocked one too many times like this
Be smart with the £2 bus fare cap in England and use it on long-distance bus routes. For example at York, there's the Coastliner 840 to Whitby on which you can ride the full 100 miles up to that stunning coastal town for just £2, making it an excellent daytrip option.

No longer a student and no longer broke but I enjoy all of your videos! Many years ago, there was a music festival. I loved wasn’t far from home. Nobody nobody was available could afford to go so I went on my own. Had a fantastic time. Not having somebody to travel with me, has not stopped me. Love this suggestion about traveling locally I live in Southern California. Plenty to see here. it has worked out in a few years, but it used to be in February. I could take a few as three days off and have 10 days off in a row due to presidential holidays.

Avoid alcohol! Even in the “cheap” countries. That money really adds up if you’re ordering a few drinks at every meal, or hitting the bars at the end of every day. If the alcohol is cheap, other things are probably cheap too, and you can really stretch your money and have more meaningful experiences without it
Yes! Clubbing is a big time-waster as well while travelling! And is frankly the same experience anywhere. I look at it in that a night clubbing means one city I don't get to explore.
Visit friends who will house you for free! That’s been helpful for me lol just make sure you’re compatible travelers and their schedule allows for it. This is geared more towards recent grads though with the assumption that their friends moved away to different places.
I would say set up price alerts for counties you want to go to during shoulder season (during breaks, long weekends, and then just buy when the price is very low) Thats helped me save hundreds of dollars tbh
Do free walking tours (but tip the tour guides - cash. Still cheaper than a museum ticket and that tour)
I stayed in hostels a few times in my 20s. Sharing a room with others for a cheaper price. It can be a good way to meet others. I've traveled solo before. It isn't always necessary to wait for friends. Nice video as always.
Tip for those who think peak season is being missed. Its really hot. And crowded and possibly not air conditioned. Shoulder is far better. Winter is good too but know what you will miss or find slow eg greek island ferries. But a mykonos rental car will be cheap
hey right now im traveling through europe. I ended up flying into geneva (cheapest flight I could find with flexible dates) and booking a eurrail pass a month prior to heading out. now that im here im not feeling the weight of those purchases. my goal was to get to austria as soon as possible and now that im here I paid 90 dollars for a 4 star hotel for 2 days in vienna where in switzerland I was paying upward to 70 to 100 for a 2 star hotel a night. I plan on doing all of my multiple day stays here in vienna, budapest, and ljubljana. sure ive spent 6 days on a train sleeping in a different city so far, but you can realistically book a train for 10 hours and get into austria in 1 day.
also, if you're in lucerne in switzerland, check out the capsule hotels! you get a bit more privacy than a traditional hostel. it was 63 chf for me a night.
Ive also really been loving the hotels with the shared bathrooms but private rooms. you usually get a good deal and also the owners I have met are always really charming and really excited to make sure you get to experience their culture.

Same things i recommend. Just switch to non alcohol drinks. I actually dont drink hardly at all anymore and still do all the same things.

Was in York last year. Such an amazing place to visit! Two days travel from Australia and absolutely worth it! Im not rich but not pov and my tip, research your heart out and figure out what is worth paying for and what is worth waking past. It is very individual. Oh and destination weddings? Send a card with a bit of coin. Its about them not you.
Is also say things like try “a drink” single at a pub or bar etc and then if you want to indulge more but from a grocery store, same though with food, as Wolter’s World always champions do lunch out but stick to the grocery store for dinner or snacks…

When i was young, I did a lot of camping to see places like Key West. There was once a campground down town in a parking lot in Key West. It is no longer there.
My husband and I just went to a Korean style spa in Dallas for both our birthdays. We spent less than $1000 total including spa fees, food, and gas. It was the best day trip ever and we got to celebrate our birthdays in, well, our birthday suits!
I love exploring Colorado on long weekends. Either by car or motorcycle.
I LOVE traveling in shoulder and off seasons. I reserve the summertime for short local trips or to spots like Arizona where crowds are low. Anywhere else I always aim for times when kids are in school and tourists are waiting for warmer weather
Hostels also often have rooms with private bathrooms and can be a lot cheaper than hotels. The advantage is that you will meet people, they arrange tours of sites and have activities nights (like making Chinese dumplings!) They are not just for youngsters either, I stayed in my first one when I was 66 years old!
Also, pick cheaper countries to visit if you dont have the money! Central America from the US for example, are shorter and cheaper tickets with lower travel costs than say Germany!
Yes please don’t wait on friends to travel! I made that mistake in high school and I’m not even friends with those people anymore. Plus they even travelled and did things without me!
Once my uncle had a surprise birthday party and it just so happened my work gave me the day of the party off without me doing anything 😁

Love the advice provided by Mark already. I have turned down multiple destination wedding rsvps over the years. What you can do instead is organize a party for the bride and groom with friends that also didnt make it and that way you can celebrate without spending serious cash or time. Secondly, one thing i didn't use to do much but now am a real strictler on is planning out your trip and budget strategically. Plan out what you want to do, how much time you want to allocate, where you want to stay and how much it will cost. Make reservations when possible. It can save you considerable time and money not to mention have you experience more. Travelling with friends can be another cost saving idea but stay away from travelling with those who love arguing with others and are not go with the flow type people, have one leader of the group and have them propose a plan. One tip when travelling with friends is that a large group isn't necessarily the best. Nor do odd numbers. 4 is a perfect number. Traveling with just one other person is also fantastic. Also your choice of destination is also an important factor. Colombia for example is not so far away and your dollars tend to go a long way there in comparison to places that are more expensive. Just a few extra ideas i thought I would throw in here. Happy traveling

@@woltersworld 100%. Most of the time people set them up at all inclusive resorts and that's just not the way I like to travel. I'd rather assist to throw a post party for the bridge and groom when they get back which we do as a little surprise and people have a great time. Yes, strategic budget planning and especially organizing time allocation is seriously helpful. I'm not saying plan the exact time you brush your teeth, go to bed and eat but have an idea of how much time you want to allocate to something you want to visit and get to the next point of interest. Years ago, I used to travel on a whim and it backfired a few times. I guess you learn with experience.

If you're a college student you can look into studying abroad. My college had a summer semester in Italy available. Ireland and a few other countries are available to study for the regular semesters. Definitely worth looking into. Most of it could be paid for you.
A budget tip of mine: Staying at a super-low-budget hotel and buying an admission to a municipal swimming pool on an evening is much less expensive than booking a hotel with those facilities. (Note: not possible in Greece)
My friends wanted to go to Blackpool Pleasure Beach so I booked separately for the same day and bought my ticket earlier to save money and to avoid problems

The trip was over 5000$ usd
So yeah, I will now take all tips and trick to save so I can travel again

I’d like to add one point to your list. If you have friends or family in the area you’re going to visit, stay with them if you can. I’m going down to Dallas, Texas for the upcoming eclipse and am going to stay with my sister for a few days and not spend any money on accommodation.
Trusted Housesitters once you qualify and are great with animals. Camping.
Couchsurfing build connections
If your on budget and coming to England and want to watch Football (soccer) try going to lower league side. Will be significantly cheaper than Prem or Championship. Plus you will be helping the local community, which is a bonus.

April is Easter holidays in Europe, so there are families travelling
Don't forget to look into international programs your university may offer! You generally still have to pay for those, but a lot of times the experiences they arrange for you are coming at a much cheaper price compared to if you were to try to arrange the same type of trip on your own.
Big fan of the channel and this video has lots of great advice. But disagree both about the credit card recommendation and would advise adding a word of caution. I did exactly what was recommended in this video, which is use credit cards with points and travel insurance to great affect when I was broke and young however, not everyone has the discipline or flexibility if they’re a little short that weekend to find the funds to make sure that they don’t run a balance. Also, I thought it was funny that you mentioned to the British Airways card is maybe not ideal for Americans when that was actually my first big rewards card, granted I was living in France at the time, but with the bonus I was able to get half off many flights home to the U.S. when abroad and to Asia. The other nice thing about points is sometimes they’re excellent for those kind of backpacker trips where you want to do one way or around the world type things which you actually can’t book with cash, at least not reasonably.

A couple girlfriends of mine took a road trip out to Denver after our junior year in college. We saved quite a bit of money by all three of us staying in one motel room. Not an ideal situation especially with one that liked to hog the bathroom for a while, but you gotta do what you gotta do to save money as a broke college student.
Maybe I'll find myself in Ireland for St. Patrick's Day in the near future. Who knows?
Mark, may I point out one other thing though. Yes, shoulder season might be great except for areas that are known as Long Distance Hiking Trails, think Camino etc. Because hikers also use the shoulder season, due to temperatures in summer. You do not like to walk certain parts when it is like 40 C / 104 F. So you might suggest people not to travel directly near these trails.
If travelling to Europe, try things like Flixbus it is usually cheaper as using a plane to get to your destination. (okay it might take a bit longer, but travelling should also be relaxing. Doing 10 countries in 14 days is a huge NO NO.)

Whether your broke or not, I would say to save money, get off the beaten path and perhaps skip some of the iconic places (or don't get suckered into the tours or "extras"). That's how some of these people are able to travel to multiple countries in a year without breaking the bank... they don't pay for the "extras" which can really add up in some cities such as places like Paris, Venice, etc. I mean just walking or using public transportation versus a bus or taxi/cab can save you money right there, and perhaps eating at small local resturant or food stands versus large extravagent restaurants can also save you money (I'd say that food and perhaps accomodations are the biggest expense, and if you don't mind, you could save a ton by staying in some of the smaller hotels instead of a 3 or 4 star hotel).
Back in the day’s, still living in Germany, students, small budget and wanted to see as much of the US as possible (before we became citizens), we had European student ID’s, slept in tent’s, hostels, motels and yes hitch hiked or had a Greyhound pass (2 weeks any place in the US) . Great experience, until we found out to become American citizens and moved to Hawai’i for a lifetime vacation 😂

Destination weddings are over the top idea. If they want you there- the couple should pay. And I agree not waiting on your friends. Be independent. Hostels are not for everyone. There are "basic rooms" category that cost about 45 GBP a night.
If a friend expects me to go to their destination wedding and won’t help pay for it, then they were a fake or at least entitled friend to begin with. Throwing that out there
Regarding Blackpool Pleasure Beach at the time of this comment, it's approximately £35 to book your ticket in advance to get in the theme park, however if you book on the day, it's £50

It’s funny, when I was younger I used to only travel to places where I knew people so I could crash on their couch. Now I won’t go anywhere without booking a hotel. I tried a friend’s couch last year and booked a hotel room in the middle of the night cause I realized I’m too old for that.
How about making money while traveling? Especially when traveling in some rich countries. I was ordering a coffee in Scotland and speaking with an Eastern European accent. She thought I was looking for a job! Easy! Traveling to US? Many people go to gig there as long as their tourist visa allows.

Yes, don't wait for friends to travel! If you can go and you want to go, GO. People get hesitant to travel by themselves, but the reality is that traveling by yourself is MUCH better than traveling with a bad travel partner. I wouldn't have done even a QUARTER of the traveling that I've done if I had waited for others to be available, interested, or in a financial position to travel. You don't need other people to have fun. Don't let other people's interest and participation (or lack thereof) stop you from doing the things you want to do!

3:10 Wow, only 10 days of PTO? That's insane. I genuinely thought it would be more, you get a legal minimum of 22 days of PTO where I live, which adds up to pretty much a full month if you get all of your PTO at once with all the normal days off you get each week. I genuinely thought that was the norm in all countries from places like Western Europe and North America and stuff.

Some guy in Guatemala told me he was living on 14 dollars a day. I said then why are you here? That isn't enough to enjoy it.
I would say about 100 dollars a day in central and south America, and 150 a day in Europe is the minimum. Food is a major cost is Some places, lodging is in others. Transportation is the 3rd. Those are all necessary. You want to have enough to go on tours or visit sites and have fun.
Economic necessity, he'd be homeless in the US on that amount
I don't think you need to go on paid tours in Europe to see or it or have a good time. I'd cut the paid tours out of the plan😂
@stevebalestreri7427 I agree. I've never gone on a single tour in Europe. You don't have too. On the other hand, in central and south America, they are absolutely the way to go.
In Europe, I love touring in a rental. I love nature, and what I call getting small. Going to the small villages and such. Europe has great access to everything. In the cities, you can use the subways to get to all the attractions yourself.
The high Andes, well that is a different experience. Best to ask the hotel which tour agency to use in town. For 20 to 30 dollars you can do most tours. Macchu picchu, anything in Costa Rica, and maybe some of the tours out of the capitols , cost more than that. I wouldn't want to drive in the cities, on some of the scary roads, deal with the poor roads going into the parks, etc. In south America and other places.

I'm French, when I travel around Europe I try to get a few local meals in restaurants, some bits from bakeries and food stands and the essentials at cheap supermarkets. I've been to so many Lidls 😂

Except when you are a broke college student (or teacher), your major breaks for time off are the most expensive times to travel - aka. the Summer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas 😂.
Unless your friend is paying for you to attend their destination wedding, avoid it like the plague. Biggest scam ever 😅. Also, traveling in the “shoulder seasons “ is great advice for everyone, not just broke students.
Why would a broke student go to England or Ireland. The prices of things are insane. I just spent a night in london as part of a layover it’s cost me the same as half a month in the balkans. That’s right. 1 night cost more than 15. 2 beers and a crap salad cost the equivalent of 12 beers and 5 meals.

60 € for a nice comfy double bed with an own bathroom sounds way more noce than cramming ypurself into a hostel with 8 other dudes for 40 €
Go to SE Asia, Africa, or South America. Think outside of the Europe box. So many people think that to travel you have to go to Europe. Every culture is interesting and has amazing things to offer. If you want to travel but don't have much money I highly recommend going to Asia. Don't go to the touristy places. See the actual country. It will be more beneficial and cheaper.
