- What is HUMILITY and what does it mean? Understanding Humility (meaning and definition) is of great importance to all spiritual truth seekers in this modern age. Humility has many definitions. dictionaries define humility as a low self-regard and sense of unworthiness. True humility however is simply a non-judgmental state of mind, free from pride, arrogance, vanity and personal bias. Humbleness or humility is considered a virtue in all true Religious and Spiritual traditions, and in some is considered to be the mother of all virtues. Though often forgotten in our current times, being humble in body, speech, and mind is still an extremely potent and powerful quality of those serious spiritual devotees, who wish to advance as much as possible in this most precious human lifetime. The truest humility, and most powerful for undoing past negative karma, results from the recognition, realization, insight, or vision that the mind of it's own is incapable of really knowing anything at all. The ego thinking mind is prone to narcissism, ignorance, self cherishing, self grasping, pride, envy, jealousy, arrogance, anger, judge mentalism, as well as many other negative delusions, programs, and habitual tendencies. Intellectual Humility is the supreme antidote to these narcissistic personality traits. For the committed and devoted spiritual seeker, one's journey of awakening will of course lead inward to the discovery of pure consciousness, awareness, spirit, soul, higher self, and God. Alignment with spiritual truth, principles and values of the heart will lead one forward. Reflection of scripture and teachings, meditation and contemplation, prayer, devotion, and surrender at great depth are the skills needed to reveal one's inner Divine dignity. Being humble is a heavenly virtue in that one can submit one's lower ego self to the infinite light and will of the Creator, in Christ, in Jesus, in the Holy Spirit, or God. In other Religions this same process is available. In Hinduism, for example, one may humble oneself before Krishna, Shiva, Vishnu, Brahman, Ganesh, or any of the many representations of Divinity. Likewise in Buddhism, one may submit to Lord Shakyamuni Buddha, the Clear Light Mind, Pristine Awareness, Rigpa, or one's own Buddha Nature. Spiritual differences in regards to genuine humility stem only from differences in culture, geography, language, and styles of the times. Sincere Devotion, Worship, Supplication, and Surrender are great acts of humbleness. Simplicity and Humility before God is profound in its inspiration and intention. True humility is a necessary quality of genuine confidence and leadership, it is patient, kind, honest, gentle and wise. Scholars and philosophers of the past have all respected and developed their inborn humility over pride as they intuited the limitations of the mind and the true source of knowledge, wisdom, and power. Desire God, desire Truth, desire Love, desire Peace, desire Wisdom. Raise your Level of Consciousness and Raise the World.

"The difference between being humble, being shy, and just hiding out of fear is immensely great. But man's unawareness is such that he is not even capable of making distinctions between his own actions and responses to reality; otherwise, the difference is so clear that even to ask the question is useless.
First you have to go deeper into the word 'humble'. All the religions have given it a wrong connotation; by humble they mean just the opposite of the egoist. It is not so. Even the exact opposite of the ego will still be ego, hiding behind facades. It is shown once in a while in the so-called humble man: he thinks he is more humble than anybody else - and that is the ego. Humility knows no such language.
I have told you the story of three Christian monks. Their monasteries were close to each other in the mountains and they had to pass each other at the crossroads every day. One day it was too hot and they decided to rest a little and to talk to each other a little. After all they are all Christians; they may belong to different sects, but their fundamentals are Christian.
As they sat down under the shade of a tree, the first one said, "It is absolutely clear that your monasteries may have something, but you cannot find such wisdom, such scholarship as you will find in our monastery."
The second one said, "You have raised the question, hence I have to say this: your monastery may have scholarship, but that is not the question. Nobody is more austere, disciplined than the people of our monastery. Their austerity is incomparable, and in the ultimate moment of judgment, remember, scholarship will not be counted. What will be counted will be austerity."
The third man laughed and he said, "You both are right about your monasteries, but you don't know the real essence of Christianity, and that is humbleness. We are the tops in humbleness."
Humbleness and the tops? - then it is simply a repressed ego. Out of greed, out of tremendous greed to enter into paradise and to enjoy all its pleasures, a man is capable of repressing his ego and becoming humble. Before I can tell you what true humbleness is you have to understand the false humbleness. Unless you understand the false it is impossible to define the true. In fact, in understanding the false the true arises in your vision on its own.
The false humbleness is just repressed ego, pretending to be humble but desiring to be the tops.
The authentic humbleness has nothing to do with ego; it is absence of the ego. It has no claim of being superior to anybody. It is a simple and pure understanding that there is no-one who is superior, and there is no-one who is inferior; people are just themselves, incomparably unique. You cannot compare them as superior or inferior.
Hence the authentic humble man is very difficult to understand because he will not be humble the way you understand it. You have known hundreds of humble people, but they were all egoists and you are not insightful enough to see their repressed ego."
