It's even more messed up in the book. Kat gets a sprained ankle or something, nothing serious at all but he can't walk. Paul offers to carry Kat back to the lines. On the way they talk about stuff and are very relaxed, except for one time when a shell or bomb lands near them. They are well away from the blast radius and Paul is not hurt at all. So he keeps walking and talking to Kat. Few hours later when they finally get back and he puts down Kat, Paul finds out that Kat is dead. A tiny piece of shrapnel from the exploding shell had hit Kat in the back of his head, killing him instantly. Paul unknowingly had carried his dead friend on his back all along.

The scene where Paul kills the French soldier, and realized what he had done was probably one of the saddest scenes in the movie. He had realized that the soldier had a family, and that Paul had just single handedly destroyed it.
I remember the French soldier was laying there coughing up blood with multiple stab wounds and it scared paul so much to the point where he started regretting killing him
All Quiet on the Western Front was such a damn well gripping and intense movie. Every second of it was outstanding and the raw and often raging emotions it made you feel (especially during the Saint-Chamond tanks scene) was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Not ashamed to say I cried at a lot of parts, feeling sorrow for these young men having to die for the glory of the old. Only complaint is that I wish the end of the movie followed the book more closely but apart from that it was done well. A definite watch and the book is a must read. Both I feel can be freely called masterpieces.
When going through hardship like they did, the simplest pleasures of life tend to be all the more greatly enjoyed. I remember the series "Band of Brothers". In one of the episode about the Siege of Bastogne, one of the former US paratroopers recalled to the camera that, as they had very little food supplies, he had once been served some creamy mint alcoholised liquor by one of the remaining Bastogne inhabitants. And the American soldier said that he had enjoyed this mint liquor so much in that moment that even some 60 years afterwards, he was greatly fond of it.
If you like this movie watch Stalingrad 1993 it on youtube for free and it’s also from the germany perspective like this movie. The movie takes place in world war 2 and is about the germans in Stalingrad. Such a heartbreaking movie
My teacher had us read All Quiet on the Western Front when I was in history back in high school. It was for my honors US History class, and we had to keep extensive notes on it. We took notes on the emotions of the characters and who they were and where they were, and so on. It was a very impactful book to me as a teen, and I think I should re-read it again as an adult.
book is masterpiece, read it in ninth class of middle school and i really got attached to Kat and him dying just so sudden was extremly shocking for me since it was so relaxed it looked like he had just minor injury and then after shelling we realize he got killed by shrapnel and Paul has carried his dead friend
the fact that kat was just a person who repaired shoes for his family makes his death more tragic he had dreams he felt like a real person more than most movie characters and later in the movie after kat gets shot drunk celebrating german soldiers pass by them with cars and paul begged them to take them back but they just left paul and kat there just for fun causing the death of kat.
@@revivalofnutrient It's amazing that even though most of us are Americans or are in allied-affiliated nations, "the enemy" letting their own soldiers die managed to piss us off. Amazing movie and book
Those Germans in the trucks were celebrating the end of the war, they weren't ignoring Paul and Kat "for fun". With Kat's situation and him leaning on Paul, to the Germans in the truck it looked like Paul was carrying a drunk guy back to the base.
This movie is one of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen it perfectly depicts the struggles people suffered on the western front and how naive they where to war if you watch the movie Kat becomes a beloved character making this seen so much harder to watch. I would definitely recommend this movie.

For those who do t know the movie is called All quiet on the western front It's about 4 friend who join the military at the age of 18 and fight in WW2. The main character (Paul) lost his friends to the bombing and was so sad so he foun a new friend named Kat. Kat and Paul were stealin eggs and chicken from the farm so they could survive, they did it a couple of times. The tactic was that Paul was standing outside while Kat was stealing, but one time they switched places and the kid of the farmer saw Paul. He followed them in to the forest and shot Kat in the liver. Paul took him to the medic but the bullet poisoned him and he sadly passed away.

The thing that really sucks, the war was basically already over at this point, the peace treaty was signed and the war would officially be over in a number of hours, they were basically on their way home when they decided to come back to that farm to steal more livestock. But the worst part of all? The general overseeing the troops decided not to let the war end peacefully and sent the troops at gunpoint to trudge through no man’s land to launch a surprise attack on the enemy. There were mass casualties on both sides.

It doesn't matter what war you fight in. If you are actually going on missions and in direct combat, it changes you forever. Being at war is the exact opposite of civilized life in every aspect. You can't successfully adjust to a war zone without re-wiring how your brains works. It's the same as lighting a match. It can never go back to what it was.
The saddest moment in the movie. Two friends left. One dies. And Paul is left alone. I cried so much during this movie. Especially at the part where Paul stabs the Frenchman and discovers he has a family and tries to help him. He couldn't, as it was too late.

It’s one of my favorite scenes in the book, and in the 1980s movie, the 2022 film did the scene really well as well.
The French soldier grabbing his arm and staring into Paul's eyes and then the mf from behind going pew pew
Oh dude in the book that whole sequence is fucking horrific to read
I almost cried watching that scene it was so hard to watch as he tried to save the French soldier
This modern movie is garbage. It's only good that comes from the visuals. The older movies were stunning.
@@theforce5191dude you gotta be kidding, the new movie felt so much better, especially having native German speakers
@oochiwaa2226 have you seen the one prior to this one?
@@theforce5191 yup I watched all versions, it always weirded me out to have Americans playing Germans, little bit picky I know
@oochiwaa2226 I guess it has to do with the popularity of the actor so that the movie can sell. It seems like everything's about money.

It's sad that he went through war and survived, then died in the way back home, just for an egg...

I read it in high-school too. I also had the book but that's been long gone. If I wasn't reading tons of books, I'd read this again.

Those Germans in the trucks were celebrating the end of the war, they weren't ignoring Paul and Kat "for fun". With Kat's situation and him leaning on Paul, to the Germans in the truck it looked like Paul was carrying a drunk guy back to the base.
This is one of the two scenes that made me cry. The other scene was when Paul died😢

It's still affecting us. My great grandfather was a disturbed man from the time he spent in your country. My family had wealth. Substance abuse, poor discipline, and bad decisions destroyed everything. We now realize it was PDSD. Now his decedent's live in squalor and every single male that is his heir is an addict or an alcoholic save for one, including my good self. Trauma is generational and epigenetic.
@@xavis_dad wow, I hope your doing ok, do you have more details about your grandfather, what was the situation of where he served or something?
@@flipwhale5494 No, not really, to both questions. I just know he fought Nazis in Germany but I never talked to him about it and he came back a different person and basically destroyed is entire life and fortune. Left his children nothing when previously it was assumed they'd inheret a good deal of land. He also killed a man after he returned in a bar fight. I learned of all of this after his death and the the fact my family was rich just a week ago I'm almost 40. It still blows my mind and I didn't believe it. I did some research because I called cap. It's all true. I'm sitting here baffled. Everything could be different if one angry Austrian went to Art school... so weird.

For those who do t know the movie is called All quiet on the western front
It's about 4 friend who join the military at the age of 18 and fight in WW2.

Just finished watching this masterpiece & i am here to write my experience with this movie but am not able to figure out what to write and how shall i express my thoughts.. It's absolutely breath-stopping movie which shows the reality of war , and glimpses of horror of WW1, and also portrays that how war brings the destruction and terror. The last movie i saw on war was Saving private ryan aroubd more than 2 years ago. And now seen this movie. It's absolutely fantastic and thrilling. Every character specially Paul Baumer has played splendid role. Kudos to team of makers and all artists.

All quiet on the western front - watch it it’s beautiful and tragic
The thing that really sucks, the war was basically already over at this point, the peace treaty was signed and the war would officially be over in a number of hours, they were basically on their way home when they decided to come back to that farm to steal more livestock. But the worst part of all? The general overseeing the troops decided not to let the war end peacefully and sent the troops at gunpoint to trudge through no man’s land to launch a surprise attack on the enemy. There were mass casualties on both sides.
In truth though it was the french who made that last attack but with artillery
@@Vsm426 Potato, tomato. One side just couldn’t accept a peaceful conclusion out of injury of pride, and led to even more deaths that were somehow even MORE pointless than those that occurred during the war.

This was one of the most messed up wars in history. Even if you survived you had to deal with bad ptsd
That is all wars. No one ever actually “survives“
War is war.
"bad ptsd": The term PTSD hadn't even been invented yet; at the time, they called it "Shell Shock" and regarded anyone with it mildly insane.
That's what I meant pretty much
The book and movie really are amazing in how they go hand in hand unlike most other movies
