- On April 20, 2024, BART ran its last legacy fleet trains. The cars, originally built by Rohr Industries, first went into service on September 11, 1972, the opening day for the BART system.
Since the 1970s, the legacy fleet has travelled tens of millions of miles and carrried hundreds of millions of passengers. They were the oldest still-operating rapid transit fleet in the nation before their retirement.
To celebrate the legacy fleet, BART scheduled three final runs on Saturday, April 20, 2024. The first train was a VIP set that ran nonstop from MacArthur to Bay Fair, while the other two stopped at all stops from MacArthur to Fremont.
This video showcases that final train arriving and departing from Fremont Station. The train soon returned to the Hayward yard, likely to be recycled and scrapped.
The Fleet of the Future survives the legacy fleet as its replacement, with 775 cars now traversing the BART system for decades to come. The final run was an emotional affair, attended by thousands looking to ride the iconic space-age trains one last time.

LEGACY LEGACY LEGACY LEGACY!!
Nice! I was actually on that train; it was a fun day for sure!
That’s the cleanest I’ve ever seen that Zoho One wrap 😅
So real tho lmao
It's so interesting that BART had 3 Legacy fleet trains running on their last day in service, one going to Bay Fair and the last 2 going to Fremont and I was only able to ride the first one the VIP train it to Bay Fair before we had to get off at Bay Fair and catch the train on the other side and take it all the way back to MacArthur station and say goodbye to the Legacy Fleet cars. The first train I rode on consisted of 5 cars and was a VIP train going to Bay Fair and the last 2 trains they put out consisted of 10 cars going to Fremont. And it was great to be able to ride them one last time before they all retired.
I was there! I've never seen Fremont Station so crowded

My hometown only had a trolley that was fine but is now actually pretty good. BART was the first system I rode, prior to moving here, that I was blown away by how cool and widespread it was. These legacy trains will be special to me.
