When Is The Right Time To Learn Barre Chords?
That was the question form a viewer during a recent Guitar Q&A livestream. You can join every Saturday 5pm ET right here on my CZcams channel! I answer as many questions as I can during the show. Watch live or later - they are all recorded. Here's my playlist of previous episodes:
I've seen too many beginners frustrated by barre chords. The trick is developing your fretting hand FIRST and then tackling barre chords when you're ready! In this video I make the case for patience, and for putting in the work that leads to barre chord success. Keep watching because I have plenty of barre chord tips at the end of the video!
Thanks for watching - more videos SOON!

It pains me to miss your live streams, but I'm extremely busy with life. I really appreciate this video. Thank you, Jonathan! 👍👍👍
I just want to say thank you for discussing this, because I’ve been trying to learn barré chords for a long time unsuccessfully
I practiced my first year w/o even attempting a bar cord. My second year I started making basic e type bar cords. I think something might have been mentioned about this on a previous program. Any one wanting to learn from the git go this is the best of all online instructors. Thanks for all your help. You teach what you can't find in any instruction manual.
he’s the best, a natural teacher!
My first guitar teacher showed me how to play Barchords in the first three months, especially the majors and the miners chords 👍😉
Thanks for the advice! Ive been playing for 1.5 years but started learning the barre after about 7-8 months. Im still trying to get the speed like you mentioned, its usually a dull first strum but then clears up. Progress is slow, but im getting there
Thanks!
Sooner or later you need a Bm, though. I did find starting with power cords helps a lot. Most rock songs do not strum all 6 strings, so you can "cheat" by using just the E-A-D strings, or get fancy and include the G. By ignoring the b and e strings, I find it a lot easier to manage a barre because I don't have to press all 6 strings down with one finger. And anyway, how many notes does a chord need? 6 is just showing off. And some power chord progressions are really fun to play so that helps to motivate practice.
This will be interesting because I avoid them at all costs!!! 😅😅😅
