John Deere 3140 priority valve cleaning

The priority valve as its known as for this model of John Deere and other models in other series of tractors controls the priority in which the tractors hydraulic systems are arranged. Since the rear hydraulics are not a necessity for safety then they get isolated from systems like the steering and trailer brakes when they are required.
This valve I had suspected was not operating as it should since the rear arms were not lifting unless the steering was jerked slightly.

Thanks for the video. Was a great help. Interesting here in South Africa we got the 3140 as well as the 3141 that came out with the 6cyl ADE engine that was produced under license from Perkins. Personally I prefere the 3141. Reliable ,better fuel economy .

Very interesting, yes I would imagine it is easier on fuel and a Perkins is a great engine. I wonder what the power output of them is. The John Deere engine is definitely not easy on fuel.

It's roughly 100hp or 75 kw. It's the Perkins engine with the vertical diesel pump. However 3141 was not the only model to get the ADE
Alot of smaller models have the 4cyl ADE/perkins. All the JD models with ADE engines numbers of that time period ended with 1.
Because of sanctions against South Africa the Apartheid government had a drive to become less reliant on the international community for machinery. All tractors makes such as Fiat, Ford,Jd were compelled to the same legislation. Trucks manufacturers were also compelled to fit ADE engines.

In the bottom of the tractors belly closest to the clutch housing. The tractor has to be split to access it directly, you will see it in my video.

Hi there I bought a 1983 2140 sg2 cab back in January. I serviced the back end. Done the 3 filters and cleaned the priority valve after watching ur video (thank you). I did not clean the filter bypass as it is located behind the spool valves and looked like I would need to remove them which was going to be a pile of work. Used it on the plough today and it worked well at the start then started juddering. Longer I used it the worse it got till it would bearly lift the plough. Is there anything handy I can check?

There is a gause pick up filter in the very bottom of the back end to screen any major dirt, worth dropping the oil and checking it. It’s behind a big nut and slides in from one side of the tractor to the other. Other than that nothing immediately handy, it’s juddering because of oil starvation to the main pump at the front which is caused by it not getting enough oil from the lift pump in the bottom end. You can start by testing the charge pump from the transmission cover on the the hi lo. There should be no less than 10 bar oil pressure there when oil is up to normal temp, (roughly 60-65 degrees celcius). I’m not very familiar with the 2140 but they are very similar to the bigger sister. You may have an internal leak and one of the most common is the hi lo which all takes a bit of diagnosis. Goodluck and if you do get it plugged into a gauge, just go through each circuit one at a time, pto, hi lo, 4wd etc👍🏻

I dont now if the 3130 john deere is the samw as 3140 but do you now where the tractor meter is it goes from the instrument panel and the to the gearbox or the engine is a short traktor meter vajer

To the timing cover at the front of the engine. The pick up magnetic sensor is electric there is no mechanical cable if that helps

The hydraulic filter is under the cab in a metal bowl. There is a long bolt holding the bowl on.
