    In today's video I show you how to change your oil in your C7 Corvette with the dry sump, how to reset your oil life monitor and how to save A LOT of money doing it. The savings on the oil is not just limited to the C7 Corvette, though! Here is where you can go to check on Mobil 1's rebate status: bit.ly/2YAPqnU. The Corvette team has recently discussed the change they made to the accepted oil in this car. They changed over to a special ESP blend of 0w-40 that is good for both street and track use. This was NOT a mandatory change, however and isn't a "better" oil per se. I have not found this oil local yet so I have not thought too much about it. If I do find it locally, I will let you guys know.

If you're comfortable doing it while just raising the front that will certainly make my life easier. I'm about to do my own oil change on my 17 for the first time. Dealer cost here is $130.

    • @Ryan-iw8yw
      @Ryan-iw8yw Před 4 lety

      Yeah and neither does he!!! This idiot hack that made this video is not a mechanic!!! A bypass in an oil filter is there in case the filter becomes clogged up and starts building pressure. It allows the oil to return to lubricating the engine!!!! So if your filter becomes clogged, would you rather have the oil start returning SOONER OR LATER??? Because if you have chosen the AC delco filter, that answer is later.
      Why do you think an aftermarket premium filter would have a lower psi bypass??? maybe to provide better protection than the shitty factory one???? DONT LISTEN TO ANYTHING THIS GUY SAYS ABOUT WORKING ON ANYTHING.
      He is just a freaking CZcamsr and that's it

    Good job, you were the only guy like me who fills the oil filter before installing! One suggestion, I recently saw on You Tube a very comprehensive test on oil filters. The Purolator Boss filter did the best job cleaning the oil, had very low restriction on flow at low and hot temp. I called Purolator up to find out the by pass press, they told me 24#, perfect! Part# PBL11403! Not cheap, but well worth it!

    Good job! Nice ramps too! One other minor suggestion an ol mechanic taught me..... When you remove the old oil filter take a quick look to make sure the rubber gasket is still on the old filter you just took off. There is a very slight chance the old rubber gasket stuck to the engine block and when you install the new oil filter you will now have two gaskets....this would be a very leaky situation or worse....thanks again for walking us through this process!

      That is what I went with. Much cleaner flow out of the car. I bought some thin zip ties which helps prevent some freak incident like driving over some rock that just perfectly bumps and twists the handle that opens the valve. I mean just how it works it would take some crazy event for that to happen but it's a easy thing for ease of mind.
      I went to Jiffy Lube with my Crosstrek(big mistake) and they stripped my bolt and this at least prevents that nightmare from ever happening again.

      Yes they do! I chose to just use the AC Delco filter since that is what the manufacture calls for and it has been tested to be a pretty solid filter and the price is just icing on the cake. Please educate/correct me!!
    1. Whats the indentation in foam battery cover? Looks like a Socket wrench
    2. Just replaced bat. yesterday and GM instruc. said pull entire carpet pan out. WHY!!?? Other vid shows folding of r. side flap to expose batt. Sure was difficult with my big hands, darn engineers!! Plus my “helper “was helpful BUT NOT by much!!bla bla
    3 Last year because of coronavirus BS, was unable to acquire 20 inch tires so swapped to 19 inch rims and tires. Two weeks after install, service rear axle light and code began flashing. Chevy dealer said only solution was changing alternator those fixing the problem. What’s your opinion? Cost me just under $2000. Subsequently Found pair of Michelin super sport 20 inch rubber but find it extremely suspicious regarding the service rear axle indication. What’s your opinion?
    4. Oil change video is fantastic! Have extremely bad luck with five oil changes so far because of very sloppy technician work! Oil everywhere on my dry sump Oil in my interior on my suede steering wheel and door panels, can’t trust anyone! Where do I buy both oil filter wrenches because current filter is probably mobile one and will install your recommended AC Delco filter!!
    5. Returning to battery situation, with brand new alternator, original battery should have maintained strength also with trickle charger applied when not driving, what is your opinion on the“New alternator “and original battery dying stranding me in the parking lot, and the destruction of my carpet pan by original GM mechanic while working on replacement of alternator?
    I have several other questions but will stop typing/speaking and wait for reply of your experienced opinions!!

    Thanks for the video! I just did the oil in my 2017 grand sport a few weeks ago. Just going to note for anyone who might read this, for the 2019s the switched over to Dexos approved Mobil One EOS 0W-40. It's pretty pricey but it's the new recommended oil. I believe it helps with burning oil under hard driving. I got it from Summit Point.

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  Před 5 lety +3

      Yup. I had originally talked about that in my video but the time was running long so I cut it out. The 19's switched over to that and all of the C7's CAN run it if you want, but ultimately it was a better oil for track use that was also able to be used on the street. If you don't have a 19 you don't HAVE to switch but you still can. I still haven't been able to find the 0w-40 locally for a decent price, though.

The factory says AC delco filter # UPF48R but I see on some filter sights and a website that the filter you're using in this vid works fine and is acceptable. Is that correct for my new Corvette? Absolutely! I have been doing this forever it seems so I have a pretty good "feel" for where the plugs are "snug" but not over tightened so I usually don't use a torque wrench for this stuff. If it's something that is very sensitive to the amount of torque applied to the bolt, that is a different story. 👍

    Question, i have a 2019 corvette c7 that I bought in April 2018. Now its April 2019 and i only got 2,000 miles on it in 1 year. The oil warning system or whatever that calculates when you should change your oil based on your mileage and how you been driving the car and lets u know if oil is low. Its like the best system to let you know when oil needs to be changed. My question is oil is 1 year old basically. But since only 2,000 miles, i have had no warning by the system to get an oil change. So is oil good? Or is it bad and way past due from oil change and my engine is f**ked? I did get the first oil change after 500 miles like they told me to do. But curious is the system that smart with all its algorithms and AI to know its still good and or is it not worth relying on and should go by months over miles for oil changes. ✌️

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  Před 5 lety +3

      the oil monitoring system does in fact take time into consideration for it's algorithm. If the oil has almost no mileage on it but has been sitting in the car for a year it is going to show it is time to change it. Oil does degrade with time as well as use. With that said, if it's a full synthetic that is good for a year then use your best judgement.

The C7 that we purchased comes with 2 years of full warranty so I just need to make sure that I am not about to damage anything by switching over to Amsoil. Your comment assures me that I am on the right path. Back in 2003 I bought a new Heritage Edition FORD F-150 ( Yes, I am a Bow-Tie fanatic) but I've had good service out of the Ford trucks...Anyway, after reaching the first 5000 kms I wanted to switch over to Amsoil but I was concerned about the "warranty". I contacted FORD and told them what I wanted to do and my concerns. Their question to me was! What oil will yo be installing? I replied, Amsoil. Their reply was! We embrace what you are doing and that they were supportive of Amsoil's product. I have installed Amsoil throughout my truck's, crankcase, transmission, transfer case, rear differential etc and it is running just fine. I am hoping that GM will be receptive. Hi Justin. I am back with another question. How accurate is the oil monitor on a C7 Z06. After driving about 1200 miles the oli life monitor said 0%. So do I need to change my oil? Or can I still drive it up until 3000 miles or more? This is where I am confused. I know for a fact that with a syntheic oil the car can be driven for up to 5000 miles or more, but looks like the oil monitor does not correspond with the acutal mileage driven. So based on your expertise what do you think I should do. Should I keep driving the car despite the fact that oil life monitor says 0%? Or should I change the oil? Thank you so much.

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  Před 2 lety +2

      I would change it when the monitoring system says to. There are many factors taken into consideration with the system other than just milage the second big one being time. Oil degrades over time even if it isn't used so if the car sits for months at a time like mine does here in the winter, the oil life still goes down. Synthetic oil changes are typically good for a year or 10k miles whichever comes first.

      You absolutely can use Amsoil, but it's a lot more expensive, not as readily available, and GM specifically calls for the mobil 1 oil for these cars.

    A hugely important point is that oil filters prevent damage but not wear. 90% of wear is caused by sub-2 micron pulverized metals. The best oil filters catch 20 microns and larger. This is why older engines didn't bother with oil filters. Bottomline: the only way to filter your oil to prevent wear and tear is to replace it.
    As such, it is much better to use cheap oil and change it more frequently than to use expensive oil and run it dirty. 15,000 mile recommended oil changes are just another way manufacturers collude to wear out customer engines faster.
    I change my oil every 2000 miles, max. I strive for every 1000. I leave the filter to 10K miles bcs its a meanlingless item. As you point out, it only costs me half a tank of gas to do so, and the engine will last five times longer than one run dirty.
    Another great tip is to use an $80 Mity pump, allowing you can change your oil in less than 5 minutes with outhout any wear and tear on aluminum threads. No need to warm up or dipstick, just replace the exact amount the pump measures out.
    Yet another great tip is to add a $300 Amsoil or Franz toilet paper filter, if one fits your car. I'm sure they sell a Vette kit. This will ensure your oil is pristine, cleaner than new in the bottle, all the time. You can actually go 100K or more between oil changes, just change the TP roll every 20K for darn near free.

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  Před 5 lety +2

      I never let my oil go for 15,000 mi even though the oil says it can I don't trust it. I had around 4,500 to 5,000 mi on this previous oil change That's pretty much as far as I'd push it.

      Yep, the more the better. I highly recomend a Mity pump (no affiliation) instead of the full service your excellent vid demonstrates. You can change your oil perfectly accurately in a flash from above, allowing you to keep it pristine. The filter can stay much longer, especially if you constantly change your oil to "filter" it. Plus you'll never need to remove/strip your drain plug.

      I have ramps too, but my Jag has a cover on the bottom with 1000 bolts. Its designed for a Mity pump with a pump hose nipple under the oil filler cap, and the filter is on top. Still, I change the oil much more frequently than the filter. But my V8S only takes 6 qts, sadly, so its more important for me to change the oil than your better designed 10 quart Vette.
      But the pump has plenty of plastic hose to scavenge any car safely.

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  Před 5 lety +2

      I love that filter on the top operation and if the Z06 had it on the top the mity pump would be my go-to! Also the Vette surprisingly doesn't have any undertray blocking the access of the drain plugs or oil filter, if it did, I may consider the pump for this car.

    OK, we all know the deal, no such thing as a stupid question... yes there is! Hopefully this doesn't appear like that.
    I had my 2nd free oil change at my dealership only because it was free, or would have done it myself.
    If this wasn't a dry sump, I wouldn't ask this question. Back home and re-checked level couple hours later.
    oil temp 175. waited 6 minutes engine off to check oil level. Dip stick reads about one quarter inch over hash marks, slight overfill Being a dry sump system, should I be worried about this? 2019 Grand Sport @ 9K miles changed at 17% oil life left. Thanks in advance for any feedback

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  Před 4 lety +1

      You are fine. When the Z06 first came out with the dry sump GM stated 10 quarts of oil but then changed it later to 9.5. The slight overfill is no big deal.

    SO, I'm confused about the total oil added. Specs say 9.8 qts. IF you fill the new filter before installing from one of the 5 qt. jugs, then add all the remaining oil from both jugs will it be overfilled??

    Just had my oil changed at dealership. First 2 oil changes are free. But asked about how much is an oil change when I get the next one. Expensive, asked why so much. He said because it takes 11 quarts of oil... Noticed you only but 10 quarts in the car... Which is the correct amount?

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  Před 5 lety +1

      Very expensive. Definitely one of the reasons I do it myself. The manual actually calls for 9.8 quarts but I start off with 9.5 and then add a little bit more until filled.

    • @HorsePowerObsessed

      After you drain the oil you just fill it up through the fill port in the engine bay. You don't have to do anything else other than that.

    Hey man. Quick question. You say 0W-40 for your ZR1, and 5w-30 on the Z06. What’s the difference? My 19’ zo6 said use 0W-40. Why did you use 5w? Are our engines different?

    • @HorsePowerObsessed

      No, not different at all. GM made the decision to change oils around 2019. You can use either oil. 5w-30 is easier to get but the 0w-40 is supposedly better to run for street/track in the Z06.
