- #NewsYouCanUse: Toronto’s Jane and Finch community has continued to be plagued with a reputation of violence and crime that is continuously perpetuated by mainstream media. But Nathan Baya and a group of artists from the area are using a new art exhibit called, ‘Aspire to Insure’ to change that. This week on #NYCU I went to see the work that Nathan is doing and spoke with him about why highlighting the positive aspects of the area is so important. What other neighbourhoods do you think has a bad rap that it doesn’t deserve? Let us know in the comments!!

I remember Nathan from Freedom Fridays. Freedom Fridays was LIT, right in the library. Big up Nathan for doing this. I grew up and JF and that's where most of my best memories were created.

Feel like this is actually very genuine. You freely admit that it is a rough community and area but are cognizant that there is so much talent here as well.

I just arrived in Canada from London UK a week ago, I live in downtown Toronto. I been looking for my black ppl everywhere. All I see when I step out is mainly white people or Asians. I was thinking yo where are the brothers and the black girls and that
toronto is almost 10 percent black im sure you'll find some black people
Both sides are at war right now more than they were 10 or 20 years ago #stoptheviolence Long Live JayJay💔🕊

All of this is great. You are not the problem. The skin color is not the problem. But telling good, heartwarming storing stories does not change statistics. The real problem is not addressing the problems headon. Not talking about them and discrediting anyone speaking about them as racist. Unless a community is willing to expose its own shortcomings, compare themselves to others with brutal honesty and have the courage to change what is considered "culture", nothing will change. Every community has its shortcomings, mine does too. And my thought on culture is that it is nothing more than a set of habits. It has no greater meaning, it provides no anchor to anything good or a sense of belonging, than a pool of mud that holds you stuck in one place. You develop your own culture as you grow, picking and choosing from all the good options available to you. Live a life aware of your own culture and others, and you will see the change.
What about duvy he inspiring
We're going to global
