  • Around the world, more than 650 million women alive today were married as children. And each year, 12 million girls are married before they reach 18. Although Malawi outlaws marriage for those under 18 years, cultural norms and poverty means the practice persists.
BBC 100 Women visits the country to meet girls at risk and the grassroots organisations working to fix the problem - alongside three of the world's most high profile humanitarians, Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney and Melinda French Gates.

Principle wise- there is absolutely nothing wrong. There shouldn't be child marriage anywhere, period. What I take issue with is that they aren't bothering to try and end child marriage in their own country as well as other places because in the US it still exists. That's just strikes me as off.

@@LucyMorris-ib1bw It may have something to do with the fact that here are 3 extremely wealthy American women (is Amal American ?), who really have no idea what it's like living in that part of the world. They will go back to their luxury lives and only think about those young girls again for the next photo opportunity. If they genuinely care, then they should go and live in the country for a period of time, and talk to older women and men and young girls to better understand the local custom and practice. Slowly, gaining trust and respect, they can begin to persuade people the long term benefits of letting girls just be girls.

while it's great to engage with the affect, the real change needs to happen at a systemic societal level. more engagement with governments and traditional authorities. engage with civil society orgs who are already doing this work. otherwise, it's just a feel good piece for a moment and not much change happens in the girls' lives

"Enough is enough. It's time to break the cycle of child marriages in Malawi. Cultural norms and poverty should not be an excuse for violating the rights of young girls. Parents, it's time to take responsibility and stand against this harmful practice. Let's protect our children and give them a chance at a better future. #EndChildMarriage #ProtectOurGirls #Malawi" Although Malawi outlaws marriage for those under 18 years, cultural norms and poverty mean the practice persists. This is how the problem breaks down.
    1. Cultural value: they need to detach themselves from what used to be what it is now
    2. Parents" Those parents should be punished if they offer or let their child be married
    3. I found it problematic that an underage girl gets pregnant; that means she has been raped and then we also have a bigger problem.

I understand that part of western colonization, but at the same time that does not give any parent or any community to degrade a woman or devalued a girl child, remember I am a daughter, a mother, and woman, and came from African background, many of my friends, sisters, and even me been told that we have no value in a society, so you see, you have to be in those girls shoes to understand the real effect of it. If women had more rights and were heard by government, this wouldn’t be a problem. They need an outlet beyond their local offices and preference.

First define "child". In the UK a person only acquires responsibility in Common Law for their actions at the age of 14. In Sharia Law, certainly here in Mauritania, it is the same. If a man asks an Imam to make a marriage for him and his bride, if the girl is young, the Imam would ask the father if she has reached puberty, has menses, and is ready for marriage. Thus in Islam a girl who is 14 or over and has puberty is not a child. Marriage is the foundation of family and community in any society and should be encouraged. The danger is that Westerners, especially non-Muslims, may place a higher priority on education. Again, in English Common Law children are required to remain in full time education until the age of 16 and that same age is also the minimum age of consent. It may be the case that some legislations have a mismatch between those two age limits, or no such limit for education. Might be as well to research that first, and also accept that the neither the West or Africans, NGOs or Muslims, have a monopoly on the best policy for marriage or education. The West breeds consumers, and is currently failing to breed, and failing to produce successful marriages. Africans, especially Muslims, are unlikely to take much guidance from such preaching.
