Sadly, he will learn that this is a rare occasion where she shows it in all its glory. She's kept back by the band, Gåte. This is what she should be doing, always - and forget about everything else.

That special breast-to-falsetto sound you referred to, that reminds of O'Riordan, is called "laling" and is extremely traditional Norwegian and probably Irish as well. It was used to signal over long distances in the mountains. The sharp changes in tone is very recognizable and it works over huge distances. My grandmother used to do this and I'd bet you could hear her for ten miles. I love that they use it in this song.

    Awesome reaction🤗🤘
The instrument is a nøkkelharpe/nyckelharpa/key harp, a traditional Swedish instrument which is also used in Norway and other countries👍
I love this song and performance, and I’m so glad we’re sending Gåte (gaw-teh) with this original song to Malmö🤘
    The genre is folk/rock.
Gåte has been a band since 1999 , with a pause in between, so they know what they're doing.
    About the song:
The intro is an old “kulokk”.
A “kulokk” is how the women called/calls the cows home to be milked in the summer (often in the mountains)
So the chorus is inspired by this “kulokk”
The song itself is inspired by a norwegian medieval folklore/ballade.
    Ulveham means wolfskin
    English lyrics:
    [Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen]
    [Verse 1]
I was such a beautiful maiden
My stepmother evil, my mother she died
She turned me into a sword and a needle
And sent me to the king's estate
And the anger my stepmother felt the most
That all the stately liked me best
    [Chorus: Vocalization]
    [Verse 2]
Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf
She cursed me to walk the forest alone
And never will I bе whole and good
Before I drink my brothеrs' blood
    [Chorus: Vocalization]
Check out their song “Svarteboka” featuring Djerv

This strange instrument is a traditional Swedish string instrument with keys ("keys"), called Nøkkelharpe in Norwegian. The keys are used to shorten the four playing strings, which are fundamentally tuned in c, g, c1 and a1, in order to raise their pitch. In addition to these strings, the key harp has a system of resonant strings. The playing strings are set into oscillation with a bow, just like other stringed instruments. The key harp is held on the stomach while playing, much like a guitar, and the bow is guided in vertical movements. The keyed harp is widely used in Swedish folk music. Especially In the 1600s.
As a Norwegian and a metalhead, i'm so happy we finally got share their good music with the esc society. Can’t wait to see then later this year.🎉❤🇳🇴

The Lyrics are also cool. Here is a english translation: [Verse 1]
I was such a fair and sightly maiden
With an evil stepmother, my mother she died
She turned me into a sword and a needle
And sent me to the king's estate
And the anger my stepmother felt the most
That all the stately liked me best
    [Chorus: Vocalization]
    [Verse 2]
Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf
She cursed me to walk the forest alone
And never will I be wholе and good
Before I drink my brothers' blood
    [Chorus: Vocalization]
    [Outro: Vocalization, Storm]
I thеn tore out her heart
    So her blood flowed free
Then I got to drink my brothers' blood

Hi, there. Greetings all the way from Brazil! I was following the Nord National Final and saw all the performances from them. Absolutely amazing. A little fun fact for you: they had to rewrite the lyrics one freaking week before the final, because the broadcaster was afraid it would not be considered totally original because of the song's roots: a Norwegian ballad from about 1000 years ago.
As I got from a few comments, the band has always been inspired by traditional Norwegian folk music and rock.
The opening itself is a recording of an old Norwegian herding call, which is developed in the chorus.

The verses are heavily inspired by the Norwegian medieval ballad «Møya i ulveham». Ulveham = Wofskin. There are several lyrical variations of the ballad and the melody was lost. There are also old Swedish and Danish variants of the same ballad.
Gåte's lyrics in Ulveham come based on the first part:
A young maiden is transformed by her evil stepmother into a needle, a knife and a sword.
The good disposition of the maiden prevails, even if she is a transformed being,
and all the most virtuous people appreciate the needle, the knife and the sword.
To punish the maiden even more severely, the stepmother then turns her into a wolf
and curses her to walk alone in the forest until she has drunk her brother's blood.
Which is where the text of the Eurovision lyrics ends.

(The middle age ballad however has a darker ending, and I get associations to old original Brothers Grimm fairy tales:
After a while, the stepmother is having a child (in fact, she is pregnant).
The wolf attacks the stepmother on her way to church, and drinks her heart's blood.
Thus the curse is broken, and the virgin stands forth and is just as good.)
    Epic all the way.
To close this up, we are very like minded sound wise, and I'm suprised you are the only one among hundreds that I saw commenting that agree on the similarities with Dolores, a favourite of mine:
About a month ago, I wrote this on another super good reactions channel:
"I noticed you mentioned Björk, that I love, but I also feel some of the "colors" in her voice and a few of her vocal movements have a bit of the late and cherished Dolores O'Riordan in it."
That comment can be seen here:
    czcams.com/video/cryeLGX4hJs/video.html
    Cheers! Very good quality analysis!!

      "Which the lyrics ends"
That is actually not quite true. If you listen closely at the last choruses where the instruments don't drop out, you 'll hear a faint whispering/growling voice. That voice tells the rest of the story. That she killed her pregnant steph mother so she could dring her Brother's blood.

They`ve been playing together for i think 20 -25 years (Gunhild was a teenager when they started out) Sadly I don`t think they`ll win, but they will get the exposure they deserve, and become the international group they should be. They combine so many of the Norvegian music genres, folk, metal and elecronica.

You said she is not hiding her accent when singing, but she is actually not using her own accent. Norway has a lot of different dialects and accents, and she takes on a different one that is more old. A lot of Norwegians struggle to understand the lyrics even though they are in Norwegian. But it helps giving the song the right feel.

  • @katinkaridde-coffey6493

Gåte is a folk rock band since early 2000s. You can find their music on apple and Spotify. Also here on youtube. I can recommend the official music video snd there is a longer original version of the song here on youtube. As the songs competing at Eurovision song contest can not be more than 3 minutes they made a short version for it.

Gåte’s music is a dark, mesmerizing and stunningly beautiful take on Nordic folk. Where they flirt with elements from traditional Norse and pagan music as well as from more modern genres like rock and industrial.
The chorus is a socalled KULOKK, - the maiden calling the cattle in from the the mountains. The roots of this song is a thousand years old.

  • @katinkaridde-coffey6493

The instrument is a key harpe. Traditional instrument in Norway and Sweden. Gunnhild sings in a more traditional style. Gåte is a folkrock band since early 2000s. Lyrics based on a trad 1000 year old tale ( many versions of it all across Europe) in many verses while you danced holding hands in long rows. The tradition still lives on in the Färö islands. The wordless chorus is a cow call. It and similar exists everywhere where you have mountains and people let the cattle graze free in the pastures up high with young women or men tending to the animals. It was a way to call on the cattle but also to communicate between people.

Ulveham is an interesting word. There is a lot of connection between Norwegian and English. Wolfskin is the right translation. The "ham" word has an wild almost magical animal ring to it. We don't use the word anymore. Ham would probably be what you use to dress yourself up like an animal at Halloween, only it's the proper previously living wolf, not some random cloth fleece thing. I believe it might be the same word used in the English word "ham" as in the thin slices used on a sandwich.

There is too much screaming for my taste, and not a meaningful text but an adventure from before. The only thing is I like the rhythm. Gåte are against Israel and did not want to show up in Malmö in May because Israel is going to participate, but they changed their minds and are going anyway.

Many people are not aware of what she actually sings, which in my opinion is a cruel text from the old days. The text copied from newspaper:
She summarizes "Ulveham", based on an old medieval ballad, as the story of an evil stepmother who casts a curse on her stepdaughter - who turns into a wolf running in the forest forever. She only loses her wolf's hide if she drinks her own brother's blood.
"There will be a kind of happy - but cruel - ending when she meets the stepmother on horseback in the forest, throws herself at her, rips out her heart and drinks the blood. Because the stepmother is pregnant with her brother - thereby the curse is lifted.
