The “screaming” (chorus) is based on the ancient tradition of calling the cattle home from grazing in the evening. Each family had their own variation on this call/singing technique and these particular kind of tunes are meant to carry far and over passes.
My winner, period. I have been watching eurovision since 1990 and this the best for me, ever... I feel all kind of things while listenign to this, it's almost the definition of music !
The norwegian folk tale is originally a long 1000-year-old text. In short, it is about a young maiden who is cursed by her stepmother. The curse turns the young maiden into a wolf who will be stuck in the forest alone, and the only way to break the curse is to drink her brother's blood. One day the young maiden (now a wolf) sees her stepmother, so she kills and eats her. It turned out that the stepmother was pregnant, which led to her drinking her brother's blood when she ate her stepmother, breaking the curse. Gåte is a band that takes old folk tales and turns them into songs. The genre is a mix of traditional Norwegian folk music and rock. In the chorus of "Ulveham", the vocalist sings on a "lokk". "Lokk" is a song or cry with which you lure livestock. A "lokk" is often based on fixed melodic formulas with lure calls adapted to the various animal species (cow, goat, sheep), where the animals' names or pet names are repeated. The lokk is used to call the livestock to the evening set on the farm.
Awesome reaction🤘 I’m so proud we’re sending this to Eurovision😍😍 Gåte (gaw-teh) has been a band since 1999 but they’ve had some breaks. The name gåte means riddle. Ulveham = wolfskin The intro is an old “kulokk” A “kulokk” is how the women called/calls the cows home to be milked in the summer. The song is inspired by a medieval folklore/ballade, a dark one🤘 The chorus is inspired by the intro (kulokk) English lyrics: [Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen] [Verse 1] I was such a beautiful maiden My stepmother evil, my mother she died She turned me into a sword and a needle And sent me to the king's estate And the anger my stepmother felt the most That all the stately liked me best [Chorus: Vocalization] [Verse 2] Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf She cursed me to walk the forest alone And never will I bе whole and good Before I drink my brothеrs' blood [Chorus: Vocalization] Originally this song is much longer, but they had to shorten it down for Eurovision. Love from Norway 🥰
Comrade, this is the best ever eurovision song, FARAWAY the best song not just this year, EVER. This song finished last ???, this world going to hell !!!. Greatings from Serbia.
@@hypatiatv421 Thanks you🙏😊 It was a shock that they came last, I was like😱😱🥺❤️ But I’m still proud we sent Gåte, and I still listen to Ulveham every day (full version👍)
The "å" is pronounced like "o". If you want to hear the correct pronunciation of the band's name, check out this clip from the Norwegian semi-final (posted on their official channel): czcams.com/video/Qs4ibmEh-qk/video.html Right at the beginning, the name and the title (which you already pronounced correctly) are announced. Since you enjoyed this song, I also recommend to check out the original version of "Ulveham" which was released last year and is nearly twice as long (you find it as an audio-clip on youtube). And if you really like a mix of Folk, Rock and also some electronic influences, Gåte is the band you have been looking for, so I highly recommend to check out the live and official music video clips you find on their official youtube-channel, especially the live-clips of "Knut liten" and "Rideboll & Gullborg" as well as the clips of "Hemnarsverdet", "Kjærleik" (both are acoustic songs) and "Skarvane" (which sounds very electronic). Gåte already started in 1999, when their singer was just 14 years old, and became very successful in Norway after the release of their debut album "Jygri", but there has been a longer hiatus in their career. At the end of 2005, their singer decided she wanted to become an actress and except for a few concerts in 2009/2010, it wasn't before 2017 that Gåte reunited. Last year, a few weeks before their Norwegian tour, the vocalist's brother and co-founding member Sveinung decided to quit the band. He was replaced by John Stenersen, the guy who played the keyed fiddle in the performance you watched. It's a traditional Swedish instrument, which is also used in Norway. In Swedish, it is called nyckelharpa, in Norwegian nøkkelharpe. (The letter "ø" is pronounced like the German letter "ö".) John Stenersen is also the leader of a female-fronted Folk Rock/Metal band called Bergtatt, in which he also plays a hurdy-gurdy. If you like Gåte, you might like them as well. And for a mixture of Folk, Rock and electronic influences, also check out the Swedish band Garmarna, which started in the early nineties and have also been an influence for Gåte. Fun fact: the lyrics of the title track of Garmarna's album "Vedergällningen" (i.e. "Revenge") tell the same story as the Norwegian medieval ballad "Møy i ulveham", which Gåte's song is based on. The main difference is that in Garmarna's version, the main character who is turned into a wolf by the evil stepmother is a boy, whereas in the Norwegian version, it is a girl.
Can Norway be disqualified because their singer has been a wolf (and also a knife)? I don't really know the rules of Eurovision. But yeah, I love this, I sing it while cleaning my kitchen and annoy my neighbors. It's my favorite this year.
the lyrics are about a woman who is turned into a knife by a spiteful stopmom, but she becomes beloved, so she turns her into a wolf instead, and as a wolf she eats her step mothers heart@@themarianne30
I have found that the best way to make English speaking people understand how to pronounce å is to use the a sound in all. Not the a sound in for example after.

No, I don't think it can be disqualified because the lyrics involve blood or knife. The Estonian song is about drags and it isn't banned

Yes, they are *absolutely* playing live at the Eurovision, and that has lead to some rather embarrassing performances through the years...
Vocals are live; instruments are not.
Yeaaaahhhhhhh
Norway❤
..check out : GÅTE feat. DJERV -Svarteboka (Official Music Video) -Gunnhild and Agnete alternates singing...

å is something between the sounds a (as in cup) and o. Gåte means riddle
Great reaction! If you want subtitles, I created a version in 4k with subtitles on my channel.
The å in Gåte is pronounced as the aw in "raw"
Nice reaction! Maybe I'm a slut for escapism too and that's why I love it so much :/
escapism sluts unite!
Gåte mesn in English riddle snd a Nice Good song Even i hope keiino had win. But is realy Good song and hope mabye win to. I selv com from Norway smil❤😊
In the context of the band I think "Enigma" is a better translation.
I really loved Keiino's song too this year!!
Between this, and your reaction last year to Alessandra, we might need to get you an honourary Norwegian citizenship😅
what can i say you guys know how to do eurovision!! hahaha
Norway got last place... Last place? What is wrong with eurovision?
Those with musical ears were scared away from the Eurovision a long time ago.
I don't like it ! I think there will be too much screaming and not a text that captures me and i am from Norway. The only thing I like is the rhythm.
