started watching my own club in the late 50s and recall seeing Bobby Charlton George Best and Denis Law at their peak. this documentary destroys the myth that the Premier league is the best standard, as many critics claim. Though todays players seem good athletes, where is the kind of forward skills the likes of Jimmy Greenhoff, and Stuart Pearson display here even in short clips. Even the aura around the wide expanse of Wembley with its open roof has been lost to the modern game. All the worlds top players hoped to play there, now it lacks status. To think now one forward with Everton has gone 20 games without scoring a goal, and probably earns more in a month that some of these top players earned in their careers.
As a lifelong united fan this final is one of my sweetest memories of following them,...to beat our biggest rivals , and stop them doing the treble was great,...i loved the era of 60s ,70s and 80s football, ....im not a big fan of moden day football, and its a shame todays united team is poor by comparison, and they dont entertain or excite me in the same way,.....and i loved these times , when winning the cup was bigger than winning the league , and the build up on cup final day was brilliant ,....miss those great times
1976, lived in a back to back in Huddersfield with an outside toilet. Watched the match on our new black and white television. All I remember of the game is losing and spending the whole time looking for my uncle who was in the Wembley crowd somewhere. 1977, all worthwhile, bagsy Stevie Coppell in the playground, left foot right foot off a brick wall for hours like Bobby Charlton showed us. Chester Zoo and an elephant they named Jubilee. 1979, my first real massive disappointment in football. That one hurt a lot, to come back from 2 down and have the momentum with us to be kicked in the guts by a winner from Alan Sunderland. Forward wind 30 years and I'm chatting about the youth team with Dennis Irwin and a grey haired Arthur Albiston at a home match against Sunderland. Greatest club on the planet. We will return.
@@paulmcdonough1093 Yea, from the bloke who feels he has to comment on a United winning video. (And not just that, his team isn't in the video full stop)
OMG. Thanks for posting this. What memories. Cried 76 cried 77 with tears of joy. Me and my pal Muller from Mayfield in Cork. Little did I know one of our pals we kicked ball with then around the area would end up a UTD legend a few years later. Keano boy... happy Ballinderry day's. Poncho ya beauty.❤
I watched that game with a good classmate of mine from Portsmouth college of art. I was supporting Liverpool and Steve, was a Manu. Fan. I remember young Athur Albiston having a great game. We were 26 years old and and living life to the hilt.
This was the day I became a United supporter. 8 years old very hot day sitting in a hawthorn tree in my mates garden in Benchill, Wythenshawe listening to the commentary on a radio. When the final whistle blew I jumped for joy out of the tree on to the ground. Went to my first match at OT in 1979 vs Spurs in the league cup and went to nearly every Saturday home game during my high school years until 1985. Was very fortunate in the 2007-08 season that a two different people I knew gave me their season tickets when they couldn't make it to the match.
The united fans were blessed to watch a team like that.! But the united team were more blessed to have supporters like them..! That day was a one i will never forget.. st.helens day 21/5/77..a day of destiny.❤
My Dad has been a Red since 1957. He went to all of our finals in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. The first game he took me to at Old Trafford was against Watford on the 30th November 1985. 1-1 draw. One of the best things that he ever did for me. Cheers Dad.
I went with a group of lads from W/shame in a post office van. As we got near to Wembley we saw the United team bus behind us in slow moving traffic. The back doors of the van were flung open and we piled out…an old sofa in the back of the van fell out and collapsed on the road. Tommy Doc sat at the front of the team bus saw what was happening and pissed himself laughing. In those days the losers did a lap of honour and United fans chanted Liverpool as the trudged past. Can’t imagine that will ever happen again.
I was there as a 16yr old and of everything I’ve seen before and since with Fergie,it was an Outstanding Day and once again we beat The Scousers and stopped their Treble!! It meant everything!❤
I had the honor of meeting some of the 1977 team, My uncle's friend Ashley Grimes played with the team, I got to see Ashley with my uncles and his friend, they were all friends ,just older than me, I was in the players lounge and saw members of both teams Southampton and Man Utd, I met the then owner Lord Louis Edward ,he died several weeks after meeting him, very nice man, and team
Tommy Doc shouldn't have been sacked. I know why he was sacked but I still don't agree with it, even now. That exciting team was broken up too quickly and never reached their full potential. I don't know if we'd won the league if the Doc had stayed, but we would have won more trophies, that's for sure. More Cup competitions. Maybe a European trophy. One of the biggest what if's in our history.
Boy that’s a trip down memory lane, went to a lot of those games but never to Wembley, great side then, pity it can’t be said of the current squad. 100% red ❤
United delayed winning the league by 10+ years by sacking Tommy Docherty. It would have been great to see Dochertys team mature and take on the two Great teams of Liverpool and Cloughies Forest. 77 team was a good one.
Liverpool went on to win their first European Cup the following Wednesday. The BBC's FA Cup final broadcast in those days was always followed by The Pink Panther Show. Just thought I'd mention it.
I was attending Portsmouth college of art at that time and had just finished my end of term exams when I rushed down stairs and asked our janitor what was the score ! What elation to hear that Liverpool had won the big cup for the first time. A 26 year old Scottish lad loving my life in England.
Although ultimately they would only win the FA Cup this was one of the great United teams. We'll never know what they might have achieved if Docherty had remained as manager.
Proper United content. Me Grandad, Father and all me Uncles times. They would go to Mcr or anywhere without a pot to piss in just to see United. I was born in '78.. 9 months after the Reds stopped the Scouse doin the treble. I think me parents had a good night. Our work is done here says them. I'm the youngest out of 3.
This is the 1st united team I supported at the age of 13 I had the shoot photo of them on my wall and my mum bought me this strip from a stall in tooting broadway market
In August of that year, I was sailing from Liverpool to Dublin to catch a flight to New York and on the ferry I watched on the BBC the announcement that my boyhood hero Kenny Dalglish had signed for Liverpool. I was upset but also delighted for the Liverpool fans who as yet, did not know what a fantastic player they were getting.
I started following Manchester United in the 75/76 season and it broke my heart when we lost against Southampton but going back to win in 77 was fantastic! Pearson,Mcari,Copell and Hill along with jimmy and Brian they were my heroes GGMU not forgetting the rest of the lads who were all fantastic on the day to beat the best team in England at the time
As a New Yorker who knew nothing about this era, I really enjoyed this documentary. For me 1977 was the Yankees winning their first World championship since 1962. Lol very cool stuff.
What a great day. Lou Macari and Jimmy use to practice that goal in training every week 😂. Always remember in our end seeing a massive United banner with the liver bird on the floor and Red Devil putting his pitch fork through it.😊
Lou macari with one of the jammiest goals ever..the ball was heading for the corner flag when he belted it but hit greenhoff on his chest which diverted it over clemence..still smarts watching this..!!!!..ah well..at least the cup was magic then..not the cop out it is now.

I was 10 and a Liverpool fan. Kevin Keegan was my favourite player. My next door neighbour who was 9 was a Man Utd fan. The FA Cup Final was the biggest event of the football calendar. It was a warm day and Liverpool were favourites. Liverpool has a great side and would win the European Cup just a few days later. Liverpool lost 2-1 to a very scrappy Utd goal. Still to this day it is my biggest disappointment as a Liverpool fan and stopped us being the first club to win the treble.
Due to unfortunate and somewhat unnecessary circumstances if Tommy Docherty had remained United would definetely have won the league in my opinion. He would have brought in some more big name players to enhance the side. The game sure has changed
I’ve always said, it’s such a shame that Doc got sacked for falling in love with his life long sweetheart. Who knows what that young team could’ve achieved?
77 was the year I realy started following utd. Didn't have a chance against the scum according to everyone in that year. Lost in final year before and this was sweet victory
I remember losing in 76 as I was at the Scottish Cup Final to see my own team Hearts play Rangers ... I was 14 then and my dad drove me my bother and two uncles from Edinburgh to Glasgow but we couldn't get in because of the queue, so my dad decided to just go home .and listened to the game on radio but when Hearts were 2-0 down at h/t , he turned the station and listened to the United game ... Man Utd and Hearts were my teams then and got both to lose cup finals on the same day wasn't the best ... My fave United team was the Doc team .... Proper football.😊
What I wouldn't give to have this team and this manager as the Man United side of 2024.
