Lyrics
Dyin' flame, you're free again
Who could love, do that to you
All dressed in black, he won't be comin' back
Look, save your tears
Got years and years
The pains of seventeen's
Unreal they're only dreams
Save your cryin' for the day
Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the mornin' sun
Fool if you think it's over
It's just begun
Miss Teenage Dream, such a tragic scene
He knocked your crown and ran away
First wound of pride, and how you cried and cried
But save your tears, got years and years
Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why...
I'll buy you first good wine
We'll have a real good time
Save your cryin' for the day
That may not come
But anyone who had to pay
Would laugh at you and say
Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first

Oh my heart. I wish I was still back in the 70s
a simpler time for sure
Same for me!
We all do.
My favorite decade!
Me too! I was a teen but, I wish I was back in the 70s and was in my late 20s, early 30s.
Our bodies grow old..not our spirits.
The music is singing to our spirits
Beautifully said Susan, the 70's was without a doubt my favorite decade. Born in 1951 a "military brat", I was determined to achieve my realistic goals as a proud blue collar worker & I did. The 70's provided the base to do so. Take care & may God Bless you.
@@bermudaguy5003 1951 was a good year..I was born then too
2024. It’s never over listening to this classic ❤
Same here !👍🏼
Absolutely. Brings a smile to my face!
The 1970's. When the music made you feel good, and later made you remember.
Well said, and very true

The best!
70s was a awesome time 🎉
I was only 15in end of 70's and I agree I have more memories from that then my 80s for music. They killed the music with what they call it today. Country isn't country and pop isn't even a thing anymore., ☹ ☹
@@user-xt9vh5re6r oh yeah the crap they call music today is terrible for sure
Oh, how I miss the 70's. ❤
Right
This song saved my life I was 17 dated a guy who wanted something I wasn't ready to give he called me a big fat pig said I was a loser I was going to end it that night in my room this song came on I had a good cry and decided the guy wasn't worth it thanks Chris love ya
Yeah. He wasn't worth it. And good for you for standing your grounds. Proud of you.
Guy sounds like a butthead, you’re moving on to a lot better anita
Good for you. I'm sure you found somebody much better. He doesn't know what HE MISSED OUT ON.
I am so glad that you are still here to tell us your story.❤

Wonderful!
Wish I’d married my soulmate 😢
70’s had great music.
Chris Rea is PURE GOLD!! 👍👍
now, thats MUSIC!!!
Today's youth have no idea. It's so sad.
I agree! The crap they listen to has no meaning..very sad
Chris wrote this masterpiece for his sister who was going through a young teen breakup at the time...makes this song all the more special.
In that case, it seems a bit mean for him to be calling her "fool." Oh well, it's still a beautiful song.
But arent most teenage girls foolish at that age? Thinking they are 'in love' and how they found 'the one's, and all the drama.
BTW: Whatever happened to Benny Santini? :-)
@@dgprk65 People weren't Karens back then.
That is incredibly sweet.
And thats exactly what it is, a Masterpiece!! I come back and listen all the time! Who can resist the masterful gravelly voice in a classic pop melody!
I was 15 in 1978 💫❤️✊ What a timeless song from a time when it was absolutely wonderful to have been young born and raised in the Bay Area ✨✨✨
Here in 2024, soon to be 79. The 70s was the best time of my life ! It's NEVER OVER till it's over !
Funny you say that, I was born in 70 and the 70's always make me feel like a summer breeze down cape cod! I can smell the hawaiian tropic!@@BrianCarnevaleB26

Truth. So many heartbreaks in my life. Now - at almost 60 - I am married to the RIGHT one. 3rd marriage. THIS one is right. ❤
It’s over 😂 70s were it❤
absolutely, the best music ever
The incredible orchestra behind his voice is what made the sound so emotional, especially the strings.
Underrated singer
When I get to meet the Good Lord I'm going to ask God if he can just bring us back to this era and never let it change. 70's - 90's. Man what a time to be alive and enjoying life. Everyone playing outside until the street lights came on. The TV set at 10 (I believe) asking do you know where your children are? Families going to the lake and picnicking all day. Feeling nostalgic but it's all good. Music like this, takes us there.
It sure does
Boy, you just described heaven. ❤❤❤
Amen to that Brother!
You hit the nail son
and 60"s
Anyone know what I mean when I say…certain songs just hit you emotionally. I was a child in the 70’s (born in 74). I hear certain songs now and I am instantly sitting in the back of my parents car for weekend shopping and remember things I’ve totally forgotten. It’s a good feeling but makes me cry as well. Where did the time go? Everything was so much better back then.
Yes, we all know..but you were just a preschooler when this song came out..We were teenagers so this song hits us in a much deeper way..Like maybe songs in the late 80s hit you
@@sandrahernandez569 what kind of stupid reply is that? How do you know how certain songs hit deeply with a child? I have an exceptional memory. I can remember being 2yrs old. I remind my parents of stories they’ve forgotten. This song and certain others reminds me of my childhood in the 70’s…when my grandfather died, when I was sexually abused. Does it get any deeper than that for a person? I don’t think so.
His voice is so sultry ❤, especially when he says "knocked your crown and ran away " I feel like he's looking right at me! I'm like a 58 year old teenager! Lol
The 60's, 70's and 80's were the best!
My beautiful, beautiful Mom loves this song. Lost her in October. The wounds are fresh, they may never go away. I listen to this everyday, it makes her alive in my heart. I love you, Momma 💕
MY CONDOLENCES TO YOU, AND YOUR FAMILY. MAY SHE AT PEACE.

Me too! Takes me back to the fall of 1978.
Actually saddens me, the nostalgia of wholesome, innocence, real love, young and naive😔
What a great time to grow up. This song brings me back to great memories of the late 70's.
This song is remarkable…. The lyrics, the music….. love it!!!!

This music arrangement, instrumentation and Chris's voice make your hair stand up on the back of your neck. Only a few artist in this world have been able to create this culmination of music and voice to give you chills like this song.
Some songs no matter where you are when they come on bring your stomach butterflies right back to the times of our teenage dreams.
This song is a masterpiece...how it's written, the lyrics, the production, choice of instruments, and the stunning vocal performance of Chris. My all-time favorite soft pop song!

Just think how different, for the best, music would be if Chris had toured in the United States.
I love his voice and never get tired of listening to him.
I even like his face because like me he is green-eyed, and a very, very sweet singer. A great British musician.

One of those timeless pieces of which you never tire. I truly feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know his music. So lovely.
Someone who can handle very well both the electric guitar and keyboards is a superb musician, as here.
Totally agree with you, but it also has to do with the person's emotions and the capacity to feel. Unfortunately, not every individual can feel the same about the same thing or experience.
Love this song 🎵. It is a song that takes you back to your youth. Weather it relates to you or not.
Lol you mean everyone under 40? Damn the comments on this track have me rolling.
I miss this good music. Especially with the KUNK OF TODAY! I miss the late 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s
Listen to the words this man sings.
A song that brings back vivid memories of a very special day for me. It was 0757 on Friday 3rd November 1978 when Metro Radio, Newcastle played it while I was waiting my driving instructor to arrive for a last lesson before my test at 0900. He pulled up outside just as it was being faded for the 0800 news. By 0945 my learner plates and Provisional License were confined to history. I still have the vinyl single, it plays just as well today as it did then and is of immense sentimental value to me.
I was a newlywed and great Memories of the juke box playing this songs while my husband closing Pizza Hut after his shift. This was one of our favorites … 1978.

Chris Rea is actually a pretty good slide guitar player, he's been doing it since the seventies. His only top 40 hit was "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", which reached #12 in 1978, and was produced by Gus Dudgeon, famed for his work with Elton John. John also collaborated with Rea on his 1993 album, Duets, which features Rea's excellent Strat work.
This tune is proof enough that back in the 70s, even when life had it's low points, we could still find a reason to have a positive outlook on the future.
For Future Reference: We weren't 'confused' about what sex we were back in the day.
His scarf meant nothing, so read nothing into it.

And such a voice with only 27 years old Chris. Incredible.

Back in the 70's one would listen to the radio for new music, and quite often you would come across a gem.
I can distinctly remember where I was when I first heard "Fool if you think its over" during a cold winter's night at a friends place.
And after all these years the song hasn't aged, it still sounds as good as ever.
Nice to know someone out there feels the same❤
I understand that he wrote this song for his younger sister after she had her heartbroken by someone.
"Newborn eyes always cry with pain, first look at the morning sun" has to be one of the best lyrics ever....
Exquisite poetic lyricism 🦋💯🕺🎊🌈💃🙏☀️⚘🍷💋👏💙🌱🍛
The SUPER 70S WERE THE HOME BASE FOR GREAT LYRICISTS AND SINGER, SONG,WRITERS IN HISTORY!😊
And it’s so true.

Great song
Chris, I'm 59. Just heard this song tonight again for the first time probably in 30 years. I thought I need to learn this on the guitar. I did a search on youtube and saw that my friend on Dave's Guitar Channel had a lesson. He gave you a shout out and explained the Record Label wanted you to use another name, and that you declined. Wow, people with principle back then. Well done, and thanks.
Met Chris at a party one time. It was early in his career. I recognized him and he was very appreciative.
And he's a wonderful person. Been through SO much physical misery, but has a wonderful attitude. A beautiful soul!! Love him. ♥️
The fact that I heard this song today on a radio station in late 2022 speaks volumes as to how fine of a piece of music it is. 44 years and still getting airplay.
Just heard it on the radio yesterday. Had to find out who sings it.
...a timeless classic... great music never gets old. It just mellows like a fine wine... 🍷.. cheers my friend..
Newborn eyes always cry with pain. Quite a line.
I was 15 when this song came out & I've always loved it. I read that lyrics either express emotions, or tell a story. I know he wrote this for his sister after she had her heart broken; what a touching way to reach out to someone you love. ❤ The music of the 70's will always be the best! Somewhere down the road of years, we lost our innocence, but we have great memories that most of you reading this can relate to. 😊
Takes me back to my mid teens. I was 14 when this came out. Little did I know how good I had it. I'm doing good now, but whoever said "youth is wasted on the young" wasn't kidding 😮

Pure talent! 1978, I arrived to NYC from another country; only a young kid. This song brings backs so many memories from 40 years ago…
I arrived in 1992, like Chris Rea also other British singers have had a lot to do with the best times I have had in the United States of America.

The harmonic progression here is perfect, and the melody as well, so this is a Pop masterpiece. Thanks, Chris Rea for your huge love!
One of my absolute favorites. Chris’s voice is like no other. So soulful and pure. Thank you for the amazing memories from my youth.
He actually re-recorded this again as he said it was too high, and dropped it by an octave or so. When you hear this after the later version, you can hear how strained the top notes are...
BEAUTIFUL SINGER BEAUTIFUL SONG ❤❤❤❤
The reason why this song is such a classic because it is a Man, lyrics, a piano, and pure emotion. I love his scarf and how he looks into the camera as he sings. He tells a story about losing a love at a young age. We have all endured that. True magic.
This song is about his sister who is dumped at 17
What a nice brother.
I remember being in back of moms Impala heading into Tulsa for groceries once a month, we lived in boonies then ( owasso) I liked this girl with long blonde hair across street, she had a trampoline and I could usually see her hair flying above the corn stalks from the garden. My dad got transferred to Los Angeles in 1978 so we moved, I didn't know a whole lot of what happened to my friends and the blonde ponytail until later. Me and my mom were watching America country awards and she was setting in the front row next to Garth Brooks, they had met in Ada and ended up getting married and having three girls. Her parents still live across from where are little farm was. Life from the backseat of an Impala watching the world go by not knowing where any of us would be going in life. A shout out to all the blonde hair girls jumping on trampolines, you never know where you're going so enjoy the ride! Hey sandy hope all is well!
Their divorced go get her...
Something so addictive about this song. I could listen to it over and over and over... bittersweet but so soothing!
