    There’s a product called “Foam Beak” that attaches to the hose of those cans and produces a wide, flat layer of the foam. Would have made this a lot easier!

    I would suggest that you spray flex seal on the foam to plug the holew and retest this please make this happen

    1) I like your theory. I think that would look super cool too, to have a submerged boat, with two people sitting inside paddling, it's like you are floating on the water with no boat..
    2) If you had sandwiched a layer of plastic under the outermost layer, it could have been totally water tight. An idea for version 2, the spray foam yacht.

      To smooth it out after spraying, you can cover it with aluminum foil and gently press it smooth. The aluminum foil does not stick to the dried foam. Recommend heavy duty foil for this.....

    I used insul-foam for years, and we built so much. Unlimited applications. I know this would work with some sort of rigid lightweight frame. Building a wooden mould of sorts filling the void between 2 layers of plywood would help prevent seeping. Great video 👍

    24 cans of that foam is more than just buying the kayak from Walmart. Try foam board, fiberglass and polyester resin. Cheaper and stronger.

      Pike/Muskie are more up north but they are in other areas too and the swampy area they were in is perfect for pike and Muskie, catfish are in deeper water but they are throughout the USA, gar are more in the southern USA and usually at the surface so they’d probably see them. Those fish are not very skittish, though. I’ve seen pike attack paddles on kayaks before

    I had thought of doing this a while ago great fun. I think a little more foam and a bit of reinforcement and you could have a viable boat. I would defiantly make the sides higher.

    Should have smoothed it out with a trowel before it dried instead of leaving it lumpy. It would have worked a lot better and used the resources more efficiently.

      You can smooth it out as soon as you spray it. I've used it for insulating walls and stuff. You can easily smooth it out with a trowel.

    Just off the top of my head, laying some lengths of wood lath or small diameter PVC pipe on the first layer of foam at the keel, turns of the bulge, and the gunwales- then foaming them into the structure would make the boat much more rigid without adding too much weight. A little shaving and smoothing/sanding of the exterior surface would make for smoother sailing. You have definitely sparked some ideas for “quick and dirty” boatbuilding - my favorite kind.

      @@andrewness Wire frame can get heavy. Trying to make the foam boat buoyant with almost no extra weight. So maybe a plastic frame. Ends could be melted together to form th frame.

    You could make a bone structure using pvc pipe or wood pieces, or sticks. Also for the foam if you dip a drywall scraper in water or oil you could smooth out the foam on the bottom to give a smooth surface, and close up gaps.

    Many years ago our company entered a "Wacky Raft Race" sponsored by Budweiser. All of the vessels and rafts were home made. One guy made a wooden boat frame with 2"x4"s, and covered the outside of the hull with spray foam. As he sprayed the foam on, he smoothed it creating a water tight boat. He arrived up river against the current in first place. Thank you for reminding me of a great time in my life!

    If you make a mold and then spray it but use a board or something flat to press the foam down to fill in the small holes and making it a smooth and unholed surfaced. It will be less bendable. But a little thick by a inch or 2.

    Make an frame, from maybe 1x2's or 1x4's cover with cloth, then spray foam, it would work awesome! Especially if coated with rubber or plastic! It could possibly look like a professionally built boat!

    After spraying out the foam, you should have spread the foam out with a knife, spoon, stick, whatever. Then, you should have buried metal bars to re-enforce the structure of the boat.

    Fiberglass driveway marker rods embedded for longitudinal and transverse rigidity. Spray foam to bond together and create reserve flotation. Flex Seal to keep the water out. 🤔

    next time try to make a frame of pvc pipes, use some fiberglass mat/patches between foam layers and make flat outer surface (after spraying foam spread it with spatula or something flat), dont forget to cover the end of pipes, should be more stable and durable (and definitely less leaky) :D

    When you put the foam on, you should have smoothed it out to make an even surface. Also some thin steel reo bar in the foam would give it some rigidity.

      Spray foam isn't a thing you can smooth out. Think of it as spray glue that goes foamy. If you touch it, it sticks to you and doesn't come off. It sticks to dry things, wet things, itself, the inside of its own can, glass, plastic...

    I would have added a few layers of plastic sheeting and smoothed the foam with a putty knife until you eliminated any pores or holes.. But it did work.

    Next time use a couple of sheets of landscape fabric .one inside and one outside. then a couple of lengths of bamboo on the inside for rigidity

    Yea flex seal the bottom and build the sides up a little more and then you can sand it smooth and idk maybe carve a seat inside idk. Just optimize and put some more work into it, I think it'd turn out great

    You might try putting the plastic on the inside of the boat on a fresh spray of foam. Then do a plastic barrier plastic on the outside. Try that .
