In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Alter Bridge for a live verson of one of their fan favorites, Words Darker Than Their Wings. I must say that this performance really impressed me...and made an impression on me. I especially was taken by the singing of Myles Kennedy. His higher vocal range is quite unique and powerful. Seen AB over 10 times, meet the whole band once, and mark at a few Tremonti shows. They are amazing people. I can honestly say this is the greatest rock band of my generation. Go see them live it you get the chance. Rock on!!
Love the band and their music and have been listening to their work for years. Since One Day Remains, so probably from 2005...
Seen them twice (second show they had Black Stone Cherry open up). Both shows were ruined by an over heavy/bassy PA setup. Could hardly hear the vocals or guitars. The acoustic numbers though were excellent.
I absolutely love them, I’ll give em a 3 way tie with Trent Reznor with nine inch nails and Tool
I am 61 and will say they are the greatest band in my generation. I have also been fortunate to meet the at both an AB and Tremonti shows. Great people.
I dream one day they'll come to Brasil. I'll go anywhere in the country to see them!

Everyone needs to have someone look at them like Mark Tremonti looks at Myles Kennedy right after Myles hits and holds that extended really high note near the end! That is pure love and pride in a job extremely well done!
AlterBridge is a really great band of musicians!

Marc Tremonti is criminally underrated. Doug, you need to check out Marc singing Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon"... yes, really...
And the live of waters rising for this concert, its awsome
So it's very interesting to note, that despite the fact that Myles is one of the greatest vocalists ever.... in any genre, that he too has songs that he's afraid to do. This is the only time they've performed this song live.
There are two things i would draw attention to. 1) When "The Note" is hit ... Look at Tremonti's face of pride when he looks over to Myles when he NAILS IT. 2) ... the very last note, when myles raises his right hand to finish the song.... The Adrenaline shakes!!!! I've had moments like that on stage, when my band played a song so much to my satisfaction, that my entire body got the shakes!!! This is an incredible reaction of an incredible performance. Oh .. i'm going to add a 3rd thing to watch.... Tremonti's harmonies in the chorus ... so good... switching up in two places in his harmonies... so amazing. (when you hear it, you'll know! :) )
so let's give Tremonti some props here too... his vocals are spot on.
you missed something.... anybody notice that after the first chorus, in album version myles sings the last "truth alone". In this live version, you can hear the crowd sing it, Mark looking at Myles beacause of that and Myles saying "yes" with his head.

I saw a comment on another reaction from a person who was at the show. Apparently the applause went on for even longer than what they show here. Incredibly well deserved. Myles is an incredible vocalist.
You MUST do 'Cry Of Achilles', the leadoff track from their best album, Fortress. Hands down, their best song!!

One of the absolute best bands in rock…they have been doing this since 2004, and Creed before that, but this song especially live, wow!! Goosebumps every time
Agreed…one of my favorite performances, ever. Amazing song but this live version with the orchestra is at another level altogether. Never get tired of this song.
By far and away they are my favorite band. I've seen them on several occasions and they are even better live than in their studio albums. In fact, last April I took my GF who is more of a country music fan to one of their shows and she was absolutely blown away. Once more, she was move to tears by the songs watch over you and words darker than their wings. It was an absolutely amazing night.
I've been following rock music for 60 years. AB are my favourite band of all time. Never tire of their music, live or recorded. Just the absolute best!!

I only got into Alter Bridge 2 years ago after seeing Myles’s work with Slash (which has tons of other killer rock songs for you to react to btw!). This specific song and performance has become an all-time favorite. Saw them in concert for the 1st time 3 months ago and was so impressed that I got tickets to see them again in August. Please do more Alter Bridge soon!
I saw Myles with Slash a few years ago. Such a killer show.
Similar story - I saw Myles with Slash doing an acoustic set here in Australia and followed up by seeing them live in Melbourne. Alter Bridge are just so sadly unknown but I beat their drum to everyone!
I've seen AB 11 times live, and I've only heard this song performed once. It was truly spectacular then, but I would have given up all those shows to go to this one. AB are the nicest, most down to Earth guys on the planet, and they don't get the recognition they truly deserve.
One thing I want to point out that wasn't said was Brian's descending bass line in the bridge. Those 2 runs he does brings so much to this performance.

I was there too. Seen AB 8 times and This is the absolute highlight. Best gig I’ve ever been too and I don’t think it will ever be surpassed.
I too was there with my son; in talking with him after the show, we both confessed to tearing up during the song and the overwhelming audience response. It was the greatest concert I have ever seen.

One of my favorite bands since I was about 14 or 15. No matter how much I listen to their music it always blows my mind and puts me in a good place mentally and emotionally. Interesting fact, Myles Kennedy played trumpet and has a four octave voice
I bought this album when it released, and I've listened to this song many dozens of times. I never put together the meaning. Thanks for opening my eyes and getting me to dig a little deeper.
This is also one of the few (in my opinion) instances in which a song performed live has better quality and cohesiveness than the studio version. I just love it.

There is a personal story of Miles around this subject, His dad died when he was young as a result of the refusing medical help due the encouragement of the religious group. That effected his views towards faith and religion. Great analysis. Thank you Doug.
I haven't watched this video yet, nor do I know this song, but was his father a Christian Scientist? Metallica's James Hetfield has said that his mother died needlessly at a very young age due to refusing medical care, and said, "If a deer knew how to fix a broken leg, it would."

I wish this video had gotten a lot more views than it has. Such a beautiful and amazing song. And a spectacular performance. It deserves to be seen. I see a comment below recommending Cry of Achilles. I concur. Wholeheartedly. Definitely one of my favorites. There was a fan video contest associated with it; I like the winning fan video, too.
Damn, is that Similitude of a Dream on vinyl? Nice. AB Royal Albert Hall Blu Ray is one of the all time great concert recordings imho.

Some great suggestions have been given already and I’d like to throw in a few more Waters Rising off Fortress, Rise Today off Black Bird and Fable of the Silent Son off Pawns & Kings. The last is lesser known to date, is their longest song and has some cool tempo and key changes I think you’ll like. Certainly worth a good listen! Keep of the great work 🍻
I’ve been shadow watching your videos for a long time, I’ve been waiting for your reaction to this specific live performance of this song. When Myles hit that f# and you called it a successful score with the touchdown signal, I decided to subscribe. Please do more Alter Bridge reaction videos! I highly recommend the first song I ever heard from them, In Loving Memory. I think of my Mother when I hear this song. Do the studio version for the full effect as they don’t perform it live often and tend to chop it up for live performances into medleys. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

Saw them on April 1st for the 1st time and it was awesome. Waited since the beginning to see them and then they released Pawns and Kings and came close to home right after releasing it. So I just had to go and I got exactly what I expected, a great show. You need to do something off of Pawns and Kings on your channel, I'll be waiting.

I always took the title “words darker than their wings” to mean when someone is suffering from depression even words of encouragement can be damaging. Somebody may have the best of intentions trying to help someone ease their condition but could make things worse. But I don’t know that’s just my take. Love Alter Bridge, my favourite current band.
That high note is something that makes you feel like having a cigarette after even if you never smoked.
It's funny that Alter Bridge is the only band that can rip tears out of me in such a way, they're magicians!

Never paid much attention when Tremonti was with Creed but now he's matured as a guitarist, musician and composer and gained much more respect, totally deserved. Kennedy is sensational and the rest of the band play their roles very well.

10:27. I believe the title came from the phrase "Dark Wings, Dark Words" from a book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, because Mark is a fan. I think the phrase means about the bad news the ravens bought whenever they came.
I’m not one to be easily impressed by musicianship and voice delivery but man that high note gives me literal goosebumps. It is most likely all the moving parts, the immaculate orchestra arrangements, the chord progression and tasty guitar layerings and the AMAZING high note on top that sells it. But shout out to the sound engineer that made the crowd roar really come through right after. Makes me weep.

Interesting song, don't know if I'd call it Metal but entertaining none the less. Mark has always been a big guitarist inspiration to me, Creed was huge when I was growing up so followed his style closely when I was learning to play

I'm so glad that you made this video! Alter Bridge, Rush and Dream Theater are my all time favourites bands ever. And you have videos of all of them. i've seen AB twice, cause i'm from south america, and its hard to them to come here, don't know why, but they are absolutly amazing. Since 2004, personal favourite band. And it's curious that you have made the two songs that i most enjoy of them. blackbird and words darker than their wings. if i can add one more to the list, i would say, "Fable of the Silent Son" of their last album (2022). Of course in my own opinion, Alter Bridge is the best current band out there today, I don’t think they have enough exposure.
"Words Darker than their Wings" is a quote from "A Song of Ice and Fire" (Game of Thrones) - it refers to the ravens that carry messages between the kingdoms. Was hoping you'd give this one a listen :)
Tremonti sang a lot of parts in Creed also.
The title is a reference to Game of thrones and chorus is wishing for the other to fing the truth
Doug just thought you would be interested in knowing there is a Alter Bridge ORCHESTRA ONLY "Words Darker Than Their Wings" on youtube. There is so much that is lost when the band is playing. Understandably . As the band should be up front in the sound.Check it out.

the progression is normal it is half step down so concider everything as sharper than what sonically is in theory
they wrote it according to G but is transposed half step down to F#

If I am not mistaking this is basically the same members of Creed just Myles instead of Stapp
Tremonti and rhythm section were tight when I saw Creed in 2000 In Orlando
And Myles can play both lead and rhythm guitar extremely well!
