  • In this video, I am going to cover the age old question is there really primer in paint and primer in one.
The answer to that question is NO, Not one drop of primer in paint and primer in one. what is does have are additives that make it more like primer.
It can be used over bare or never painted drywall, however the first coat should be considered as a coat of primer. Meaning 2 additional topcoats.
With paint and primer in one costing 30 to 40 dollars a gallon and primer 20 dollars a gallon it only makes since to Prime with primer not paint.
When it comes to certain surfaces primer must be used as well. High gloss or Stained surfaces must be primed before any topcoat can be applied. Primer can also block odor that may have permeated the wall suck as smoke odors that paint and primer in one can't do.
When selecting your primer make sure you get the primer needed for your application. Some primers do not accept a gloss paint. Some are not intended for a latex topcoat. Not only does the primer need to be able to accept the topcoat you need to make sure it is suitable for covering the surfaces you are putting it on.
The only situation I would use paint and primer in one without primer is a well maintained paint surface that is low gloss and the color the same or very similar. That is it otherwise Prime away.

PVA WILL accept high gloss paint, however, the sheen will not hold up in only one finish coat. This is generally true of most primers: one finish coat of a high gloss paint will not hold its sheen well.

I don't know why the top notch brands like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have a Paint & Primer in one yet they know better. They even have 4 levels of paint from least expensive to expensive. I get the sheen difference but to say this is better quality for the same water based paint??? They won't try to sell the all in one paint and primer to painting contractors.

which means if I buy a new house that already paint in white... I don't need this primer to apply a new color right?

Also primer can be and should be tinted in favor of your top coat.
