6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for CZcams. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free CZcams Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on CZcams.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
By the way, I wrote an e-book to go along with this video. You can download THE D-C-G Trick book here ! www.song-bike.com Get a copy now before the price goes up!
Full of great songs, riffs, exercises, TAB, photos, Pro Tips and 30 audio examples!
This is a GREAT book and I'm really proud of it. Good for beginners and intermediate guitarists alike. You can download it and print out the pages if you prefer a hard copy.
And I made a NEW D-C-G Trick video to go along with the book and you can see it here: www.song-bike.com. I have LOTS of videos at www.song-bike.com available to members - please check it out !! And please subscribe to my CZcams channel!

Here's how to take your 3 favorite chords and turn them into something SPECIAL! So many songwriters and bands have employed the trick found here, and you can't really play a lot of famous tunes WITHOUT this technique. it's a MUST for your Bag of Tricks! It's not that it's hard - it's EASY but you wouldn't think to do this D-C-G Trick without someone showing you. So it's a quick way to sound pro, and to learn a handful of famous tunes in the process. This D-C-G Trick has been used by acoustic AND electric guitar players, both with fingerpicking and flatpicking. If you can play your basic D C and G chords these might even feel easier. But these modified chords have a different musical tone than the standard D, C, and G and that's the trick! **ALERT: there are a few times in the video when the acoustic guitar takes on a sweet distorted tone which was unintentional, but delightful. Please don't email me to let me know, ok ? Thanks. - Hudba
2021 and one of the best lessons on the Tube today..
I know right! I'm just trying to find a simple explanation with easy chords and no fancy tricks. This is perfect.
Am glad someone noticed this (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
2022 also 👍
I wrote acapella for about 25 years, began guitar in my 50's , then in the swing of things, had no time or energy to play from my wife battling and loosing to cancer, then 2 years after, I'm nearly crushed to death in a 70 thousand pound mixer roll over up side down, now 11 months after all that, still in a Lot of pain, I stumble upon your youtube stuff. You have been a huge blessing in helping me get my mojo back, thanks so much
I appreciate that, Maurice! You could write a lot of songs with your life story. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel. Please become a member of my guitar lesson website www.song-bike.com and access lots of videos NOT available on CZcams. Please check it out !!
Next time someone tells me "my fingers hurt from playing" I'm going to bring them to this comment.
Hope you're doing okay, Maurice.
Keep on keepin' on' Maurice. Peace and love to you.
Damn Maurice, I hope you bought a lotto ticket after that accident! Hope you are doing well now. Thanks for the reminder to keep on going!
For someone like me 55 and just picking the guitar up you are absolutely the best teacher on CZcams that I have found. Please keep doing what you are doing. Because you are helping a lot of people. If I lived near you I would definitely be asking you for in person lessons. Cheers to you. This was a great lesson.
I'm 72 and am also just starting to learn how to play the guitar. I found your D - C - G video very helpful.
Thank you.
Likewise, but 70 and just started
I'm a 59 year old beginner, again. I did not pursue the guitar when i was younger because I couldn't tune it. Now with electronic tuners and teachers like you, I'm progressing. Had I known that knowing 4 or 5 chords I could play so many songs I probably would have continued. It took the death of a guitar playing friend to finally make the commitment. Watching your videos is certainly helping with things that other CZcams teachers are leaving out. Thanks.
+Matt Busby Thanks Matt ! I hope your friend can hear you ! Please check out my newest videos at www.song-bike.com. Other videos are at czcams.com/users/jkehew1. And you can receive news, updates, giveaways and cools posts if you 'like' my facebook page: facebook.com/mysongbike.
+Matt Busby awesome
+Song Bike - jkehew1 Jonathan - I am a professional musician with absolutely no need to watch videos like this. But I did, because you were engaging as soon as you started speaking. Then I watched a bunch, read a lot of positive comments and I was moved. Keep it buddy. Very nice approach for beginners. Nice work and glad to see so many positive comments. :-)
+Matt Busby Keep it up Matt. Nothing is as rewarding...
I wanted to play since I was 5 years old, a woman broke up with me, I was sad, so I played the guitar. I was 29 years old when that happened, been playing off and on ever since, I'll be 47 in July.
Jonathan's a fantastic teacher. Paced really well, methodical, clear and doable. Starts off basic and develops the lesson, and doesn't assume his audience already knows certain things. Nothing but admiration for someone who has the skill, is able to teach and willing to teach. Winning combination. Many thanks. 👍 BTW I have the same guitar rack as Jonathan, but sadly that's where the similarities end! 😀
Thanks so much DG!
I have a new e-book out, the third in a series...

8 years late and I'm an experienced player but I still enjoyed watching your video and seeing you work that stuff out
The simple reason that D-C-G works in all its variant permutations is that D major and C major are both diatonic chords in the key of G major. Excellent video, Mr. Kehew -- I'm sure that many beginners are benefiting from your generosity.
I'm 75 just starting. I like the vido.
+Joan Veiga Nice ! Let us see how your learning comes along. I'm 50 and have been playing for many years on and off. Just like to have fun learning.
+Joan Veiga ROCK OUT, Joan!!!
+Joan Veiga That's right Joan. rock out and turn it up to 11 !
+Joan Veiga Kehew and Rolly Brown are good teachers. Also check out old instructional videos by jazz guitarist Barney Kessel. Esp. good for tips on learning to play by ear. Finally I'll mention vids by Joe Pass. Not for beginners but he is so likeable and helpful that you are sure to pick up something or other.
+Ricky Rhoades don't you'll blow the speakers
Jonathan, great lesson! I’ve been flat pickn’ bluegrass for the past couple of years and this lesson has opened a few more doors. Thanks for the inspiration. You’ve got an outstanding teaching style.
I simply don't understand how can he be so calm and happy... looks genuine. I wonder how he reacts to the stupidity and malevolence of the human race. I watch again and again... simply amazing. Blessings!
Nature Good - I think this is the FUNNIEST comment I’ve ever seen on CZcams. Especially coming from someone named Nature Good. Thx for the laugh!
Mr. Kehew, you have no idea how much your video means to me. January of last year I suffered some disabling injuries in an accident. I was thrown out of work soon after. I'll probably never work again. I have a guitar but never really tried to play it. With nothing but time on my hands I've picked it up and have started learning in earnest. This one video is a treasure and once I've mastered it will move on to the next. Living on less than $1,000 a month means this is a real bright spot in my life. Thank you!
+Logical Prepper Hi LP, I'm so sorry for the troubles you've been facing. You make me want to film a lot more videos ! Stay in touch, Jonathan
I bet by now you are sounding really good.
Charles Diaz what are you up to now?
Good on you. Charles. Hope you are a master now and playing in public somewhere.
Been a guitar and bass player for 35 years and everybody’s has their own twist. Excellent explanation for beginners to moderate playing

I'm 70 just starting. I have been watching and learning from your videos. You have made this a great experience. Thanks for the "tricks" on how to play chords more simply. Great beginner lesson! Same way I taught my sons to play. AND if you simply add E minor chord, you have the chords of the "four chord song" in the key of G: G > D > Em > C. With that, your beginners can play countless songs they've heard on the radio...Amaze their friends and family with the 4 chord song!
I like you're attitude, Jeffrey! By the way, I have great guitar books and e-books available for instant download at www.song-bike.com. On sale through April - 30% off! Promo code: thirty
Great decision to show everyone the G fingering with the middle, ring and fourth fingers. I had planed for decades using the traditional index, middle and ring fingers and only then "discovered" the fingering that you point out on my own. I now move between different fingerings without even thinking about it, sometimes even during the same song. I urge beginner and novice guitarists to adopt this tip and learn both fingerings for the G Major chord sooner than later.
What a great lesson. 3 months into learning the guitar and this has given me some really useful inspiration. Thanks.
The first real guitar player I found on CZcams and still tied as one of my top two. Thank you Jonathan.
Hi Tyco, hope you're doing well. Happy New Year !

It's never too late to start playing! You can make it as easy or as hard as you want, and is a great relaxation therapy technique. Like golf, you focus to the point of ignoring things like money, laundry, and work for a moment. I feel that music is as close to actual magic as you can get. You can make people laugh, cry, feel good, or feel sad. You try to share as much of it as you can, without giving any of it away. This video shows that you don't need years of study to have a little of this magic for your own.

I call it the "Wonderwall G."
Oasis used this modified G throughout that song.
They actually left their fingers unmoved on the 1st and 2nd string for the whole song.
I love that

@@jkehew1 You may want to fix that first link - it goes to some sort of anime site. Looks like there is a space where it shouldn’t be.
Really great lesson. I've been playing for 55 years but can always learn more. Thank you.
Thanks Gracenote!

I don't know why, but these videos really have an 80's feel.
TheGuyWithABrokenGun Yeah, probably filmed with 80's equipment. Wouldn't surprise me if this was filmed on Betamax ;)
hingeslevers Yeah, I know huh -- not even worth watching, I mean, where's the 800 dollar smart phone that it should have been filmed with?
hey why don't you post idiotic comments about people trying to help other people and be critical of everything.. idiot.
TheGuyWithABrokenGun yeah uh, what should it look like? it's filmed perfectly -- you can see what he's doing fine.
gjh400 Wow.
+wyatt powers who lit the fuse on your tampon?
Something for me to practice. Thanks for the concise instructions
Fascinating! A history lesson, a music lesson and a breakthrough for beginners like me.
Hi Richard! You are invited to join me this Saturday May 13, 2023 5pm ET for a free CZcams livestream Q+A all about learning, playing, practicing, and caring for guitars. You can text me your questions LIVE ! This Sat. 5pm ET on my CZcams channel czcams.com/users/jkehew1. See you there !
I am so happy that youtube exists. With so much to learn I can never get bored. I wonder what people do in bars gossiping, when there are so many good people freely sharing their knowledge in so many subjects!!! I am also learning yoga.
+Univ Univeral Well dude, after learning music from these terrific videos, I recommend you go out to that bar and play with people.
I started to play music after my 25th really, but 10 years later I've played music with over a hundred different people from dozens of different countries. To play music with other people is really a magical experience to me. Like a dance perhaps, or some form of Tantric sex :p.
melanieenmats Yeah, you have enough time at your age. I don't believe I will ever play like that in a bar, unless I really learn more. Hard to keep up with the beats when moving between chords. Also, I don't like gigs because they are too loud with the amplifiers and electric guitars... that is detrimental to the ears. Maybe I would enjoy playing out-doors in a village setting where there are no amplifiers. Secondly, I have a lot to learn. I have learnt only for two months, but you say at age 25 you played gigs for 10 years, meaning you learnt the guitar well before your 25th birthday. I should not aim that high because it is not realistic.
I should have clarified. While yes I play stuff for 10 years, I have never played a gig, or even a prepared song. Only Jamming with people, mostly around a fire when camping. Those years ago I also thought I would never get to play with people. But you just have to try it. Just find a friend or group who is welcoming to beginners, and listen. You only need a few notes to be able to play with people. I recommend listening to BB king for inspiration. He's my great example showing how you need not many notes, but good listening effort.
The reason I write this much to you is that for me discovering that this road was open to me was hard to describe with words. Truly magical, a very intimate way of interacting with friends. If you don't find the right spot, don't do it. But one of these days you will be in the right spot, with teh right type of people. And in that moment. Put away your fear and self-doubt. Because you only live once, and music with people is too beautiful to not try. Skill is utterly irrelevant!
+Univ Univeral dont learn of youtube forever
+melanieenmats that is so very true, you don't need mad guitar skills or be a great singer, a lot of people play and sing better than me but people love me because i play great classic and forgotten songs . I started playing at a Pot Bellys sandwhich, shop,in town and I was totally petrified now after of year of singing 2 hours a week I'm getting gigs everywhere just have to step out in faith
I've taught and coached guitar extensively for many years...this is very good, clear, useful teaching. Bravo.
I really appreciate that, Jeep ! Please subscribe & check out my website www.song-bike.com to see my other learning materials like books, e-books, PDFs and of course more videos!
Just what I needed! I played for 20 years but computers came along in the early 80s and I got sidetracked. Now I'm back in the saddle and have restarted playing again. A great way to come back. Thanks. As usual it's practice, practice, practice and pretty soon it's easy. Onward and upward.
Thanks David - and welcome back!

I just started my life long "dream" of playing the guitar. Wish I wouldn't have waited till I was 50. Great video and a lot of help thanks.
I am with you there, I took out the guitar just 4 years ago at age 46, should have done it long ago. I like the videos as well has helped me immensly
same here
Don't feel alone! I'm 22 and started at 19. The advantage is we know how we learn the best. Use that to expedite your experience. Use your wisdom to sift through all the livks and stuff you don't need to know, and focus on the fundamentals that will help you take off. Good job on getting started :)
Don't let that trouble you. I just took up the mandolin at 55. You're never too old to learn.

When I was a kid about 1970 I got my first guitar for Christmas. My mom had never played guitar only clarinet and marimba back in high school. She taught me three cords and how to play Red River Valley my first day using the little booklet that came with the guitar. I'm 64 now and that remains my only lesson. She taught me to read chord charts and turned me loose. If people follow your instructions they can learn to play in one day too.
I love that story, Joel ! Please subscribe & check out my website www.song-bike.com to see my other learning materials like books, e-books, PDFs and of course more videos!

Thanks I learned some new ways to play C and G chords..Always wondered how the Pros got those special sounds from C and G chords..great lesson sir....
Just got my first guitar electric acoustic guitar today at 65 years old found this video and going to learn it from beginning to end can't thank you enough think there is quite a few weeks of practice for me learning the D-C-G cord trick never ever thought 3 cords could sound so great so thank you for your help.

Thank you and will definitely sign up to your site as after watching loads of tutorials on here really think yours are much easier for a bigginers like me.Mind you after having an accident last summer with an 18inch wooden propeller on my rc model plane with engine going full chat and somehow index and middle finger got mangled and now need to have an inch removed from middle finger think it might complicate my learning to play but another one of my bright ideas is I have a new 3D Printer coming and am sure I can make something to stick in finger
Great video!!! Thanks to people like you, you show people how to play the guitar The easy way!! I started playing the guitar when I was six years old I'm 63 now.. no more than eleven years ago I learned how to play the banjo!!! Lot of people doesn't know how much fun it is to play the guitar

Great teacher--- now "Liked and Subscribed". Jonathan is one of those teachers who seeks to Impart what he Knows, not put on Shows. Much appreciated. THANK YOU
You just helped me out,wow!😎Thanks
Excellent lesson, many thanks
I wish I would have found you 20 years ago. I've figured out that for most of us that playing guitar is basically learning a thousand tricks and linking them together seamlessly! Not sure if it's that way for a virtuoso or not but it's sure that way for me! Great video and planning to dig deeper into your stuff. Thanks!
+David Gifford Yes, yes and yes ! I couldn't agree more. I don't mean to downplay other approaches towards mastering an instrument but that is one healthy attitude. Thanks so much for making this video!! I have been "playing with" the Guitar for over 20 years and have never got anywhere past a few cords. Now that I'm retired I'm dedicated to doing this and while I can play some cords now cleanly this gives me a direction into something that may sound like music. Thanks for the tips and that shortcut on the G cord is interesting. Thank you again so much!!

Great lesson!... You maybe the best at explaining cords and progressions I've seen on CZcams. Thanks Man!

Brilliant instruction, thank you. I've just had an elbow rebuild having somersaulted my scooter. The nerve controlling my pinkie and ring finger is slowly coming back and, with it, my desire to get playing once again. Your tutorial cements that. Stretching up the fret board with a non-responsive 'wandering' pinkie ain't easy!

Thank you for this Jonathan! Excellent lesson and trick. Needle and the Damage Done was the first song I ever wanted to learn to play. 40 years later (admittedly with a long break) and I'm ALMOST there!
