I hate to burst your bubbles but....
No they haven't. Not at any point in the last 40-50 years. The old Republicans were every bit as racist, fascistic, deplorable, anti-education, anti-science and anti-fact as they are today. They were using the same tactics, taking the same bribes, and working towards the same goals. We just didn't have the internet to let us fact check their lies in real time and compare what they were saying to various people at various points to spot the hypocrisy.
Nixon started the drug war specifically because he knew it would allow him to persecute the minority communities of the country by labeling them as drug pushers and users, to say nothing of his impeachment. Regan pushed for gun confiscation (but only for black power groups that were using those guns on people trying to lynch them) and started the extraordinarily damaging Reaganomics lie. Bush sr. did Iran-Contra (and a bunch of other coups and murders around the world destabilizing democracies so we could push friendly dictators into place). Bush jr. lied us into Iraq and stole a presidency successfully.
At no point did their evil rhetoric about minorities, gay people, trans people, or immigrants ever significantly change. At no point was there ever a time where open white supremacists did not hold national office in the party. At no point did they ever work towards any kind of social or economic equality without doing everything in their power to shred everything good about a bill and giving a tax break to the rich on top of that. There used to be a few Republicans at the national level with principles, but they rarely voted against the rest of the party even then. Even at the supposed high point of Republican morality, they had to be dragged kicking and screaming into acknowledging basic facts that the vast majority of the country agreed upon years or even decades before.
The only major difference between then and now was that the Republicans had not had the time to go full fascist. They had not corrupted our voting system to secure seats in congress perpetually, they did not have a majority in the supreme court formed primarily of corporate stooges and religious extremists. Their plans had not yet come to fruition back then, and the liberals of the world could deceive themselves into thinking that they were playing a grand game and that both sides were working to better the country in different ways. The reality is that the Republicans have always had the same goal: minority rule through corruption and propaganda. Trump just happened to be so stupid that he tried to do a coup by force rather than by slow legislation, corruption, and destruction of voting rights.

I think the reason so many of these wingnuts, when interviewed, stammer and hem and haw trying to provide examples to support their "broad claims" is that they don't have their phone in front of them. What many of them do is regurgitate the conspiracy headline that they attach their opinions to, but they fail to spend the time to even get an example or two of supporting points, so they are flustered. Of course the reality is that there isn't any factual support which is why it is a conspiracy claim to begin with. Access to social media should require a mental competency test. The world would be much better off.

I'm sure they'd say "Only if there was fraud."
It's amazing, the 2016 election? That happened while Obama was in office? Totally legit.
The 2020 election? With Trump in office? Totally corrupt. How did that happen ON TRUMPS WATCH?
I've yet to get a better reply than "So you're a liberal commie?" from a Trump supporter.

I blame everybody else myself.. but I aware that I ( and you ) are not alone. T9 answer your question as basically as one can though . We have allowed stupid to prosper and grow, it started with "god" which is fiction and grew from there.. now in an information age we have people that think the earth is flat, they just deny reality... and somehow everybody does nothing about it. Those same flat earth idiots also don't understand that you can pro e it's a globe by shoving a stick into the ground and watching the shadow.. im choosing flerfers cause they are a very easy example of this idiocrity, and people get less pissy then when i app,y the same metric to religion, which is equally retarded đŸ€”
