Thank you so much for posting this video, made my life hell of a lot easier and less sticky. Can’t believe this is such a common problem with these vehicles, BMW needs to get their shit together. Thanks again.

Agreed about getting their shit together. Why do they paint that crappy rubberized coating over all the switch panels (windows) and the steering wheel? Mine is starting to peel and looks terrible. I hope I do not have to remove every switch panel to get rid of that crap, god knows how many labour hours that will take me! What an utterly stupid idea BMW!

Thanks for the video. You saved me a few minutes by letting me know I had to get my torx set out - 2xT20 and 1xT10 (at the bottom) - super easy! From watching your video I saw that the best way to come at the clips was to start at the back most edge and work it from the side and top - moving forward. I was done from start to finish in under 5 minutes!

Do the aftermarket handles have this rubber coating crap on them too or are they just bare plastic? My 09 E70 handles have lasted 14 years, so if the new ones last that long either a. I will be dead by then or b. the car will be in the scrapyard.

Good job. Thanks for the part number 51416969402 Black for my X5M .
You would think for the money these vehicles cost BMW would use higher quality materials. They really messed up on the X5 series. I just had to replace 6 parts under the hood that crumbled and fell apart (51717169420; 51717169419; 51717169421; 64-31-6-945-583; 64-31-6-945-584; 51-23-7-161-345). When you mention this to BMW, they don't give a damn. When you search online, you will notice thousands of these engine and door parts being ordered; sounds like a materials quality control issue. I never had an issue with my 07 M6.

    • @VehicularDIY

Yeah it's disappointing for sure, they seem to build them to only hold up for a few years now days. At least the parts aren't too expensive all things considered.

Sadly, the X3 F25 seems to require door panel removal. Yuk. I thought I had found a suitable substitute when I saw a product that lets you stitch a leather cover over the whole thing... but that, sadly, is no longer available. I with the guy who designed this part of the E70 had communicated with the guy who designed this part of the F25. :)

Definately wrong. Its peeling off because of their "soft touch" plastic treatment. This has been happening since atleast e46/e39 gens , so earlier than the 2000's.

Thank you so much that really helped. Really bad of BMW to use this rubbish coating. You would expect more of a luxury cat maker. Just more they can get to replace and make more money. So much for customer satisfaction. I will not be buying a BMW again, due to all the other little faults which pop up. Mind you VW are worse! German cars, and i have 4 of them!
By the way... Look on ebay, there are lots of aftermarket replacements which are just as good and 25% of the BMW price.

BMW cars leak oil like sieves. Especially those manufactured in the few years either side of 2010. Poor design (6cyl diesel requiring frequent hour-long drives at >80kmh to prevent emission filter clogging up quickly). Poor quality, parts broken within couple years and costing a king’s ransom to replace. We had 3 (323, 525, X5) around the same time and never again.

I just did this on my buddies 2008 X5 passenger door. Cinnamon Beige Handle P/N 51-41-6-969-404 was $249 at the Portland, Oregon, dealer; $159 including S/H from BMW of South Atlanta. The driver door handle, which is used far more, is normal, but the passenger door handle front is the one that's nasty with goo. Are others having the same experience??
