Has been more difficult than you might think without knowing they make them as “wine coolers”! Hobby Lobby not showing them online and the closest “pipes” or “flues” are over $20 online but thank you for giving me the keyword!
ive had this one going for a while. and after seeing others and more research, you MUST keep this thing in a larger container that keeps absolutely high humidity or the moss will die
@@TechplantChannel Thanks for the tip. I live in the us Southeast, and keep my moss on the porch, in partial shade, in plastic containers. All native species, collected. I think I finally nailed down my substrate, but terracotta seems a nice vertical accent. Anyway. Subbed.
To be fair, they are still in the process of selling those pots and they do have to build them at first. They need the terracotta, get the right mixture, build the right hull to burn the terracotta in a burning oven (which isn't cheap) for clay and other things which is also very expensive, planned shipments oversea and so on. The terraplanter is $84 CAD!!! This alternative is still aesthetically pleasing with plants (and without them I imagine.) Definitely going to try this out!
First of all, thank you!! A few points... the terraplanter kickstarter has raised millions... and your video pretty much shows us that most of those millions are going to be profit. So... there must be a way to make a cheap terraplanter-like mold to create these terra cotta pots. I may investigate this as I used to do ceramics with an ex-girlfriend and I have a feeling there must be an easy solution - rather than paying the $60+ for a terraplanter. Great video and great insight. Thanks again.
I think if you do this yourself you'll end up spending about 60 bucks but youll be able to produce more than one without making the cost go up. Ive been looking into it too. Youll have to find a place that can fire them or rig up some home clay firing solution. I saw some people with ceramic 3d printers. which is really cool because in my opinion the terraplanter company could have gone way further withthis. imagine have pots with smaller shelves on them or different shapes that really allow for good ways to attach other plants
@@TechplantChannel ceramic 3D printer?! Waow thanks, now I know what I'm going to get lost in next! 😹👌 I imagine people must've made some craazy pieces! How *does* Terraplanter make theirs? 😊

I also had this same idea when i almost checked out for the kickstarter planter. I was hesitating since i live in Indonesia, shipping is pretty costly, and there doesn't seem to be a replacement policy if the planter arrived broken during shipping so i tried to think of another workaround to try this method and basically thought that any terracotta pots are porous and might do just the same thing. Just gotta plug up / cover the drainage holes at the bottom.
Dude! You are awesome. I have the terraplanter on order as well as the ADA terrabase, but I knew there had to be a cheap alternative that someone would find.
If you want to add seeds to the pot, I think you could do the following : - take a length of paper towel, long enough to wrap around the terracotta pot - cut a few lengths of twine, long enough to secure the papertowel around the pot. - Lay the twine on the table, lay the paper towel on top of it - wet the towel gently with a basic water sprayer - sprinkle the seeds on the paper towel, the water will make them stick to it, unless they are big seeds. - lay the terracotta pot on top, and roll it along the paper towel, and wrap the pot in the paper towel. - use the twine to secure the paper towel and seeds. - fill with water - ??? - Profit ! The seeds will be between the pot and the paper towel, which should be nice and moist. As the seeds sprouts, they will punch out through the wet paper towel, to get to that lovely sunlight. And they will create a root network, that surrounds the pot, giving them something to hang on to. Also, the twine will help a bit. Now go make a video about it ... and make a follow up. I wanna see if it works. 😁
I think one improvement would be to use a wrasp or rough sandpaper to give the roots a bit more grip. None the less, amazing video and can't wait to see how this turns out!
@@TechplantChannel can you possibly link the pot at hobby lobby? I've searched it there and at Amazon, with no luck! I used every comvo of terracotta, clay, pot, wine decanter, etc.

In Brazil we have something called "pau de barro". Is is exactly the same idea and people use it to plant orchids, you can buy one for 4-5 bucks. I am impressed that these guys managed to gain millions with it.
Not only is this cheaper, its better (KISS principle). It would be nearly impossible to get the old roots out of those nooks and crannies in the Terraplanter when the plant get changed out for whatever reason(outgrows it, dies, sick of it, etc). With this you just scrub it with some scotch-brite and you a good to go again. Would be hilarious if the "Ch-ch-ch-chia!"-pet people came down on them.
@@TechplantChannel Valid concern, but it takes very little glue to secure a plant. Epiphyte plants only need to stick long enough for their roots to cling, and they're very efficient with that.
To be fair, it's a terracotta pot that's been carved with a 3D-printer-cutter-thingy which probably was somewhat of an expensive investment for the company 😊 If they didn't start out this project while under some education where they had a 3D printer/cutter available 😹😹😹
i don't think it will have any affect. people who want that wont change their mind because of this. my intent was never to harm them only offer a cheaper alternative for those who cant afford the kickstarter one
Well... here you don't have the surface texture the Terraplanter has that allows planting seeds and growing plants vertically. If you don't mind having to use ropes to make some types of moss stick to the surface I guess this kinda works ...
Great Video. I think for seed as you could try wrapping in thin Felt for texture and grip? I have a terracotta animal figure from the 1960’s It has a hollow water well inside. And it’s designed so you can grow seeds on its rough clay back. The kick-starter has taken an old idea and is making out they invented the concept, outrageous!
I really liked the design of the Terraplanter and was actually willing to pay the price, but then I came here and read how *douchy* they have been about this DIY project! Now I am furious and will make DIY pots for all my friends and family before they will accidentally support these people!! XD
I think you can improve the design by drilling tiny holes on the vertical side of the terracotta jar and put the jute thread used for binding the moss/plants through these tiny holes.
You can also make them using terracotta clay which should be readily available. Even still, you can easily process a terracotta clay from a pond or lake shore.
Thank you so much for the video! But god damnit! I really got hooked by their advertising and paid for 5 Pots... Still dig the look of the pot though, but it doesn't justify the price at all. Thanks to you I'll be way more careful in the future.

That's what I call a pro gamer move. No one should spend so much money on such a dump thing if you can do it yourself for a few bucks 👌 I love this "cheap" version even more
I do still like the design of the terror planter one tho but dam the price for what is essentially a terracotta pot cast with lots of seed/ water/ root grabbing dimples on it. Now the design is done I don't understand how it's going to be expensive to shove some more in the clay oven, stick them online then post them out. ... Shame they aren't on a well known website for around £20 each I would buy one.
Googled "Terraplanter" and one of the links provided was this video. Once I finished your video up popped a Terraplanter ad! Have you considered drilling small divots into the surface of your pipe to provide the "cells" needed for "planting" seeds and spores? More work but it's still gotta be cheaper than the Terraplanter.

With this you just scrub it with some scotch-brite and you a good to go again. Would be hilarious if the "Ch-ch-ch-chia!"-pet people came down on them.
lmao, yeah im finding that this thing needs to be in a humidity dome too, i have a feeling the terraplanter is sorta hiding that part.
You can also attach moss and other epiphyte plants with cyanoacrylate, better known as Super Glue.
i worry it would plug the holes, i suppose if you dab it in only a few areas it would be ok
@@TechplantChannel Valid concern, but it takes very little glue to secure a plant. Epiphyte plants only need to stick long enough for their roots to cling, and they're very efficient with that.
So, like with every Kickstarter it is kinda a scam. Like, 60 bucks for a terracotta vase D:
just over priced, they are spending a lot on advertising so i think thats where the high price is comming from
totally not a scam. I love my juicero (☞゚ヮ゚)☞💩
It’s 75 bucks for us Canadians D: while I like the way they present it, it isn’t their idea and no one can afford it 😤
To be fair, it's a terracotta pot that's been carved with a 3D-printer-cutter-thingy which probably was somewhat of an expensive investment for the company 😊
If they didn't start out this project while under some education where they had a 3D printer/cutter available 😹😹😹
@@1Pineapple I think its not even as hardcore as that. I think they just use a textured mold to form the pot.
I saw their video on fb and thought you could do it this way! Cool video :)
Yup, I hope you give it a try!
Sick video as usual, I like that you cut the “instagramable” background stuff most CZcamsrs do. So much easier to watch
wow, i guest you just destroy some overprice copycat kickstarter matthew, nice :)
i don't think it will have any affect. people who want that wont change their mind because of this. my intent was never to harm them only offer a cheaper alternative for those who cant afford the kickstarter one
@@TechplantChannel it totally changed my mind
Well... here you don't have the surface texture the Terraplanter has that allows planting seeds and growing plants vertically. If you don't mind having to use ropes to make some types of moss stick to the surface I guess this kinda works ...
👌🏼
@@evolvedape5405 you've copy pasted this response A LOT on this page....how are you affiliated with Terraplanter?
Great Video. I think for seed as you could try wrapping in thin Felt for texture and grip? I have a terracotta animal figure from the 1960’s It has a hollow water well inside. And it’s designed so you can grow seeds on its rough clay back. The kick-starter has taken an old idea and is making out they invented the concept, outrageous!
yeah we call em chia-pets here. I think some seeds would stick nicely, the felt would work well too!
Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for sharing 😁
Glad I could help!
I really liked the design of the Terraplanter and was actually willing to pay the price, but
then I came here and read how *douchy* they have been about this DIY project!
Now I am furious and will make DIY pots for all my friends and family before they will accidentally support these people!! XD
yeah im still a tad salty about it. Thanks for the support!
This is sooo cool. Thank you so much! Going to recreate asap.
Awesome good luck!
That original video deserved to be in the history of youtube :( but this video is sort better for the tutorial.
Yup at least now you guys got to see a setup video too so you can see what youll have to go through if you buy one!
I think you can improve the design by drilling tiny holes on the vertical side of the terracotta jar and put the jute thread used for binding the moss/plants through these tiny holes.
I can try
@@TechplantChannel Please and let me know the results.
You can also make them using terracotta clay which should be readily available. Even still, you can easily process a terracotta clay from a pond or lake shore.
nice thanks for the info!
Thank you so much for the video! But god damnit! I really got hooked by their advertising and paid for 5 Pots... Still dig the look of the pot though, but it doesn't justify the price at all. Thanks to you I'll be way more careful in the future.
FIVE 😂😂😂
Oh well, You have some for experimenting with then, as you wrote in your other comment you would try to do molds ^_^
Good Luck 😀
Dont worry too much about it. the pots are still really cool and they will work well. This video wasnt made to make you cancel you order it was just for people who really wanted terraplanter but couldnt afford it! So still be happy with your 5 awesome pots!
I'm making some Terra pots of my own now, there are great rolling pins with nice textures to roll into the Clay, I bake the pots and have a terraplanter for uh? Like 3 dollars, a bag of Terra clay is super cheap. 😇
are you just baking them in the oven? do they last? sounds really amazing
@@TechplantChannel I wish! They need to be baked around 800 degrees, I'm lucky enough to have an pottery oven. But you can call local pottery Makers if they can bake your piece too,. Often they ask a little compensation but it's not much. Hope you are able to make some of your own :)
Totally doing this and saving the money!
Awesome
Dude are you not going to talk about your channel just hitting 10 years of existence???
my account existed that long but my ive been posting for about 2 years, maybe 2.5 years now. Which is still somethign really cool, i dont commit to many things that long so this is pretty cool! thanks for watching too!
I literally saw an advertisement pop up on the video for this!
lol
you freaking saved me 200 bucks thank you! You deserve my subscription and a freaking bell ! MAHALO !
Welcome! I hope you make some really pretty ones! now you can spend that 200 bucks on plants!!!
Hmm I wonder if they’ll try to remove this one also just cause you one upped em.
if they try to remove this one ill counter it
This is just fucking beautiful.
thank you!
Wow - what a cool idea. Was thinking abt it as I went abt building up my zeer pot the other day :)
Go for it!
Cute! I'm going to try this
Cool video, would be fascinating to see how the plants take to the pot. I've tried to keep moss in the past but it's always died after a few months, hopefully, this is the answer to my problems!
This is brilliant! Great content as always, thank you!!
Much appreciated!
Excited to see the update! 😊
Yup ill make sure to do so!
What i have to say ... Legendary
thanks!
That's what I call a pro gamer move. No one should spend so much money on such a dump thing if you can do it yourself for a few bucks 👌 I love this "cheap" version even more
Thanks! Terraplanter just got 360 noscoped lol
I do still like the design of the terror planter one tho but dam the price for what is essentially a terracotta pot cast with lots of seed/ water/ root grabbing dimples on it.
Now the design is done I don't understand how it's going to be expensive to shove some more in the clay oven, stick them online then post them out. ... Shame they aren't on a well known website for around £20 each I would buy one.
if you are in europe there is a website that makes a smooth version for like £20 I posted it in the description!
Wow precioso...Me encanto ......muchas gracias .....he aprendido mucho con tus vídeos......!!!!!
thanks for watching!
I need an update!! 😍😍😍
it fails unless you keep it in a container
@@TechplantChannel if you live in a naturally humid place do you think it would be possible to keep outside?
Mud as a base and thin heady duty thread is aesthetically neater and it grows. This looks really messy
The link for the european user is broken. Thank you for the alternative
I would much rather grow herbs that I can pick and eat at will. I like the centerpiece idea, I might see about that.
Such a good idea - thanks so much, will be assembling one this weekend!
Good luck!
Thank you so much I like your ideas cool 👏
You are welcome 😊
Brilliant, gonna do that. How would you provide nutrients to them, can you put nutrients in the water? will it allow the nutrients to seep out.
i think water soluble fertilizers will leach through, i plan on spraying a bit on the outside every once and a while!
Better spray them. Plant feeds and fertilizer don't smell good.
But isn't fertilizer bad for the leaves of plants? :/
Can you do a video how to make a diy wet pot which is a terra cotta pot in a glass vase.
I can try
Thanks for the ideia
Most welcome 😊
Hey! I love how this thing looks! Is there an update available for this project? How long has is lasted?
Brilliant! Beautiful! Thank you for sharing! :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Please make an update on this beauty
it seems slow to grow, but i will soon
I NEEDED THISSSSSSS
Go get one they are 50% off right now!
@@TechplantChannel I went yesterday and all their stock had cracks :( dang
How about a video on how to grow micro greens and sprouts indoors on those biodegradable
pads?
can you link me them?
Great idea!
What were the little plants you set on the water? I love this idea I've gotta try it.
Salvinia Natans
Awesome! This is such a great video!
Thanks so much!
Thank you!
Googled "Terraplanter" and one of the links provided was this video. Once I finished your video up popped a Terraplanter ad!
Have you considered drilling small divots into the surface of your pipe to provide the "cells" needed for "planting" seeds and spores? More work but it's still gotta be cheaper than the Terraplanter.
yup, im thinking up roughing it up with a dremel and grinder
