Golden Era of Skating in ALL the disciplines.💯
Thank you Heavenly Joy. I have not seen Tracey Wainman 's worlds LP since 1986. So appreciative of you uploading these archives. You are appropriately named.
Thank you so much for this! I prefer the Canadian commentaries so much more than the American ones (I'm American lol)
Yeah, the John Tesh and Scott Hamilton combo was brutal.
Even though they did cover the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary it would b 10 years before CTV could reclaim the Canadian broadcasting rites 2 the World Figure Skating Championships. It's a shame they weren't the ones 2 cover Brian Orser winning the World title there in '87.
I think we can safely say in hindsight that Liz Manley had the best long program of the ladies. That she got third in the long from the penultimate group at this point in time in the skating world I think shows just how good her program really was. I have to respect the competitive spirit of Katarina Witt throwing a second triple sal in. Thought Debi Thomas skated kind of nervous and cautious throughout - the wonky landing on the triple toe, the heavily two-footed triple sal, double loop, double lutz barely. I wonder how much of a difference iManley finishing second in the long would've had on the overall standings. Witt would've won, Thomas would've held onto to second I'm guessing, but would second have been enough to lift Manley over Tiffany Chin?
Figure Skating used to be based on 3 Components FIGURES, SHORT & LONG PROGRAMS. Back then in the 80s, Competitors COULDN'T just be triple "jumpers"---they had to have more Skills. LIZ was wonky at her FIGURES.
@@waynehentley4332 What are you even talking about?
@@user-kf8wb2cq4f Well let's be honest, we never actually saw the figures portion of the competition and it was always rumored to be a total hack fest and I think a lot of results bear that out. For example, Liz Manley was 11th in figures in 1986 then in 1988 she's 4th in pretty much the same field. Did she really achieve improvement worthy of 7 places better in two years? Also Elaine Zayak - 4th in figures in 1982, 13th in 1984? Plus a reliable source has said that Katarina Witt's usual 3rd place in figures was total BS.
@@timothyhh ....Compulsories weren't exciting to watch, But that doesn't mean They were to be dismissed. Some Skaters Weren't Consistent in FIGURES. Judges tended to favor overall Consistency. ELAINE ZAYAK, because of a childhood Foot injury was Inconsistent, especially on the one foot. LIZ MANLEY had crashed & burned in many comps---she was considered Unreliable. She also didn't have Line in her Skating..She was a "jumping bean" when nerves didn't get her. JUDGES tended to Favor more consistent Competitors.
@@timothyhh ...I think the commenter who said "the Race Card" meant that DEBI was given the Championship BECAUSE she was "black." But, I don't agree. DEBI had a freshness, an energy on the ice, back then, and she seem Strong. She did strong FIGURES, won the SHORT with a clean program and held it together in the LONG....In 86, I think the Judges felt KATARINA was done..she was not challenging herself Technically and She BOTCHED her SHORT required element Triple Jump Combination (the easiest of all the ladies). ...DEBI got a boost IMO because she was a full-time College student & that gave her a status. DICK BUTTON loved Debi! ...Lastly, Caryn KADAVY, as Elegant as she was, was Inconsistent on landing jumps & even her FIGURES. She suffered "nerves." So, DEBI usually placed over her.
