Even if a bit "DODGY" on the repair, your video gave me an idea when I had similar problem on Acer laptop. Your "struggle" was helpful for me. Thank you for what you inspire in your videos !!!
I agree that laptop deserved a little more investigation time spent on it, but that's how it goes: we have good days and bad days at work.
This channel has actually gave me great confidence to fix 3 old laptops already. One VAIO with a shorted USB (which I found using the multimeter and then realized the chip was burned when I got my microscope over it), another one Acer with a bad capacitor and one HP with a shorted internal battery (yeah, the battery itself was shorted). This is a great channel with amazing content. Thanks!
How did you find a short with the multimeter only?
Just use it on diode mode (beep mode). It can detect shorts between positive and negative rails (that shouldn't happen).
Understood
It's been a long time i thought you decided not to repair anymore was checking everyday all i was finding is helium videos 😅😅😅😅I'm glad you back
😁😁
Why can't people clean their shit before they bring it in for repair..... that filthy thing is disgusting
how about plastic fan connector.
This is actually quite clean for a gaming laptop. 😀
i really enjoyed the way you explain and go through troubleshooting steps
Really like your videos Sorin..... Please never stop uploading ....
The key word here is PWM - pulse width modulation. The fan has 5v on the red (+) all the time, but the frequency applied to the fourth pin controls its speed. If this is stuck low, the fan won't spin. If you disconnect it, it will always run at full speed.
Your are right it's a simple pwd controlled DC motor with a driver and the feedback is a diode for the temperature, so pwm signal is generated from the superIO from what I understand, don't know how it failed, maybe they didnt calculated properly the supplied current?
How did the fan work off just 5V supply in the beginning of the vid then?...
If the PWM pin is left floating, it runs at max speed.
My laptop cpu fan is not spinning, but I checked the cpu fan and it is good and spinning. Is it possible that the faulty is the mosfet in the cpu fan pin?
@@1MW07F do you have a multimeter?
Good Afternoon Sorin from Greece
Awesome video again! I think it's the first time I have seen nail clippers used in an electronic repair! 🤣
Best Teacher Ever
i am very happy that we meet!!!!
Hi Sorin, this is a great video. You are always thinking about the lesser people, great work
Proper funny video. tnx Sorin!
Nice repair video
Even when you do doggy work you can allways do it better, for example cut the wires a bit further away from the connector, that way no plastic would be melted, the connector would be still removable for various reasons in the future and it would be easier to solder the wires. However i envy you of your computer knowledge Sorin! Continue with the good work, i have seen almost all your videos and like allways can't wait for your next ones honestly. Thank you.
Great job 👍
And So we're back!!!! Sorin is the best 👍💪⚔️
Thanks so much Sorin i missed you please upload more
currently watching video in my college class hehe :P well I'm the teacher and I'm teaching my Computer science programming a Sorin lesson
yay ! back to Electronics repair :)
This is good Work
Thank you Master Sorin!!!
good job mate.
I would call it a budget repair . Nyc job sorin
Great work Sorin thank you for sharing!
In case you miss the description: "After i stopped the recording, the laptop was still shutting down randomly. 3 hours later a found actually the SIO chip is faulty, that's why the fan was not working also"; In any case i liked the alternative solution for the fan.
This is not the case, even if the SIO is faulty it will not cause the laptop to shut off, what would cause it to shut off is the EC which is programmed to protect your laptop if overheated or one of the fans stop working.
The fix is simple, link cpu side pwn signal to gpu side on the board, would be a cheap fix and would work well in most cases and the EC will not trigger a shutdown as it will see that the pwn signal is ok and the fan is spinning.
@@robertvogel4056 What is EC? Is it not the same as Super I/0
@@0ctivate no, EC is another chip that checks if fans spin and other stuff such as if u have mxm gpu, if slot is occupied etc... and will prevent the laptop from operating in case some of the checks fail.
Sorin!!! Salut! Replacing the fan solve that issue. The driver inside the fan is faulty. The blue wire is an output from that driver which is read by fan controller on pcb. Salutari din Romania!!
Nice job Sorin , but I would suggest to soldering the wires a little bit far from plastic socket ...
You are great
hi, nice video, great dodgy solution, i was wondering what would you do, if there was only one fan, also as you say fan speed is probably controlled from super IO, wouldn't it be better to try and flash the bios first, to see if anything changes.
This man eats electrical wires for breakfast.
You could simply exchange fans and check after launching a game uses heavy graphic first of all. The gpu fan may not run always bcz its also connected to the cpu fan for normal use cooling. The gpu fan may only works as extension on a special case
Hi sir sorin can you please put the link where you got the soldering iron you're using now.thanks
I do hope the owner of this laptop never sees this video, cos I;d be upset if it was mine.
agreed, I cringed a lot
sorry Sorin, love your videos (but nobody is perfect)
how would you fix it and not upsetting the customer ? I guess make him pay over $500 to replace the motherboard !! the problem is not the fan , it is the super io . what would you do ?
Too much high brow, we're talking about a laptop gamer. Cheap fix and it works, moving on with life... 🤷♂️
@@Customer22374 Exactly!😁
Nice check and trick
Thank you, Doctor, teacher, and repairer. those who are old in this channel will understand
keep up the fantastic work love your videos
25:30 Soldering on powered on laptop gave me a moment of anxiety. lol
The job is done!! Keep up sorin you're great ❤️❤️
This was super dodgy! That's great, that the laptop got fixed, but it would also be possible without destroing the fan connectors =( Also, the GPU could be off, because it turns on when an GPU intensive task is launched, like a game. Thank you for the video!
Sorin ='s dodgy
No issue with the final repair itself, but would have been more practical and cleaner to just de-pin rather than cutting the wires.
Stop talkin' n start choppin'
@@Ghost572 no time to explain! 😁
our friend is back to electronics after making millions in helium mining
Bad case of dodgy repair gone wrong ! Just put some hot glue, it will be fine...😇
Activating the fan in bios would have solved the problem right away !
Just shows even with years of experience we still can make basic mistakes and end up going down a rabbit hole. :D
:)) I had the same problem with a similar model, the second fan only comes on when you press the fan button next to the power button. Stupid design but unbelievably this is the way they built these MSI laptops. Literally that laptop didn't need any "fixing" in your defence I spent 2 days trying to understand why that fan wasn't working even with high temperatures. In don't understand why msi did that. Remember for the next time when you encounter the same problem. Press the fan button first, and if it doesn't work then fix it :)
Just reset bios.
Fan issue fixed.
Press f2 repeatedly when starting the laptop
Aaaah Sorin, you screwed up a simple job! Well, those connectors aren't pretty anymore but it works, it's fiiiiiine :)
Pretty captivating is watching a man who rarely has the concept of what he does and why, but he claims that he has everything under control. 🙂
On PC when we run out of fan header on the motherboard need a spare fan header we use a fan splitter cable to connect a second fan.
I have an MSI GE72VR 6RF Apache Pro (basically the same but a newer model) and the gpu fan only comes on when the gpu is hot or you turn on cooler boost. It is not supposed to run all of the time.
Hi' great channel ! Thanks!
What can you do with a laptop fans that won't spin fast enough, they are clean, new thermal paste.
The fans will spining fast but not when they should- i mean, when the laptop getting hot (90c -+ ) they keep spin low and when they finally increase the speed the temp is lowered as it should.
No bios update available
Asus u563x
Thanks!
Hello Sorin. I see you keep stripping the wires of their insulation with your teeth. This is a bad example. I have also done this several times in the past, resulting in bad incisors and a visit to the dentist that costs a lot of money. Strip the insulation off the wires with a wire stripper or sharp knife, but keep your teeth healthy and avoid this operation, tempting as it may be. A golden advice is worth money. GRTS Andy
sorin, some applications in gaming laptop can order fan to stop , next time check them first. i like you sorin
Technic, cian 💯✅✅😎
Ciekawy jestem w jakim czasie ten laptop wróci do naprawy.
Sorin, I have one suggestion: It would be very nice to show people how to convert DIS to UMA. For those who dont know what that means: It is converting laptop discrete graphic to internal cpu graphic so you save the laptop which have DIScrete chip fault.
looks like someone been using it to put their cups of coffee on... on my MSI laptop 1 fan is for the GPU and it only runs when that GPU is under load, if its running only the built in gfx on the CPU like you would if your only running the desktop the GPU fan doesnt spin, but the CPU fan does it may be worth checking the gpu fan profile in dragon center
Dodge ball. Dodge Caravan. Los Angeles Dodgers. Not your best, Sorin; but we still love you. You Da BOSS !!!!
Well I had a similar issue when my Dell laptop kept rebooting from about 5 minutes running on and on. The laptops under cover were quite hot and I thought the wifi module went bad. I went to the service where they made the fan to a fixed voltage but that not solved the problem. Later they guessed the SIO chip or GPU has an issue but said the repair wont woth it. I did want to write to Sorin but now I came across this video however it would be nice to make a video about the super IO chip issue,
29:00 No need cut the wire...you can take off from plastic conecter...
GG!
Nice thinking 🤔
But dit the customer say something about trying to do software changing and test the fan. He can turn it off. If he didn’t you did the best you can to make is cool enough.👌🙏
so will they always spin?
❤
I have this laptop. I have to re-paste it every 3~6 months.
11:10 a wire strand broke :( be careful it might short something
Did not like soldering too close to the connector melting it. I'd splice higher, about 3 inches away.
Out of a perfect 10.0 in dodgy repairs, I'd give Sorin an 8.3 😎
there's plus, minus, one is TACH signal from the fan back (mostly yellow) for the rpm and one is a PWM signal from the board to control the fan speed.
99% of all fans in desktops or laptops and even in servers work this way. The first thing i'd have done is looking into the BIOS and check for the fan control. Then checking the operating system. Sometimes there are Fan-Tools, that take over control completely... and cause these problems. Not measuring and not looking into the BIOS was really dodgy...
Is it possible that the laptop is looping without screen, just because of heating?
nice 👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
Last week i was facing the same issue and try this method but PC stilling shut down randomly. Finally concluded issue comes to another part of PC not a fan.
You can press the third button near the power button to turn on both fans at full speed
The Board Butcher of Britain.
Those fan connectors now look like Brixton on Market day .
"The Board Butcher of Britain." ROFLMAO
so replacing the fan and heatsink won't help?
So only the blue wire needed to be cut ? ?
There was a bad msi bios update that did something similar
Laptop-ul are un buton de pornire pentru acel fan langa buttonul de power,nu functiona cu el ?
As an explosives specialist trained in many Hollywood courses I can assure you: Never cut the red wire!
Sorins still thinking about the antennae lol
Why u didn't try to switch fans and check Motherboard is ok or not?
In Brasil we call It "gambiarra"
Honestly thats a huge mess. This could be a software issue or a normal behavior without testing it properly.
dont yu think when the gpu raise its temperature higher from cpu its going to shut off again?I think probably you must test its playing a game to see the temp in case you have a problem when the gpu heats up properly
It will shut down as the EC will shut it down since it cannot see pwn signal on one of the fans.
Hello, I have a laptop for repair. Do you have any Web with contac email anything? Regards
MSI gaming laptop and coaster!
Mr. Sorin amused me very much by saying during soldering, "there is a lot of plastic here". :-)
For me better to tap the red wire on nearest 5v suspend on that fan circuit. for sure there is resistor or Ic nearest on missing fan voltage
Hello idol. Possible ba na may problema yung mosfet sa cpu fin pin? Ayaw kasi gumana cpu fan pero okay naman kapag sa power supply ko nirekta

Sir, how to fix Lenovo broken bios chip?
try to flash with alternative bios ic and file for your model very simple
i have fixed this issue on my hp laptop by reinstalling the OS..so i guess it was just software issue since i installed "not good" verison of windows :)
its because your windows was not activated. if you activate windows it will make all fans spin with the correct speed
@@robbirobson7330 it was activated, but it was pirate version
@@entertainmentguy4509 Lol no you fan is not controled by windows UEFI/Bios controls the fan speed.
@@mart43 ive just said what fixed my issue, nothing else
@@robbirobson7330 Really ?
You made also one of the biggest mistakes, you didn't checked the BIOS settings, there you can turn total turn off the fans from the BIOS settings on almost every bios.
So next time when the fans are not working just check the bios settings, it's free and you don't need to cut wires in case the fan, wires and motherboard are ok!
Thanks for this tip
what if i had one fan ?
next time you want to heat up GPU, try to use some mining software on it, it is much safer than hot air and you can test as much as you want GPU

Hi Sorin, I have a toshiba satellite L845 laptop with amd apu A6 4400m cpu which heats up to 98 - 100 degrees in just about 5 minutes of turning it on, then it turns off, I already changed thermal paste, the cooler fan spins well, I see it in good heatsink Status, will the motherboard have any electronic problems? Maybe some smd thermal sensor? I hope you can guide me on what to check, I already have the schematic of the motherboard but I don't know where to check it, thanks!
place a thin 0.5mm copper plate (amazon) between the cpu die and cooler with thermal paste on both sides, had this exact issue with a different laptop and temps went to 40's in idle from 70's.
Hi,@@fliporflop7119 thanks for response, I had already tried this method with the copper plates attached, I bought them on Aliexpress, I had no success, the amd A6 apu cpu reaches 100 degrees in a few minutes and the laptop turns off without me being able to resolve that failure
@@adrianmedina7065 maybe the copper heatsink is punctured and the small amount of gas that should be result of the liquid inside the copper is not completing the full cycle of moving the heat as is was designed to. Most gaming laptops have heatsinks with a little liquid inside, when heat is applied from the cpu die, that turns into gas and helps dissipate heat faster, if the heatsink is compromised, you can experience the issue you are describing.
Roumanians do it better! You make me proud!
why cutting wires from edges? leave some room incase u need to solder back.
Any idea why hard drive gets hot?
today Sorin was a butcher :)) but it works :))
