  • The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has confirmed that the Federal Government will take possession of the 1,130 looted Benin Bronzes when returned by Germany. The Minister, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki; and some Government officials had visited Germany recently to further talks on the repatriation of the artefacts allegedly looted during the invasion of the Benin Kingdom in 1897 by the British led by Captain Philip.Briefing This new development comes amidst a disagreement between the Benin palace and the Edo government over who will house the historical artefacts. The Oba of Benin asked the federal government to take possession of the artefacts until the Benin royal museum is built to house them. Chief CHARLES EDOSOWAN, SAN ADDRESSES THIS.

I do not have iota of doubt that president Buhari and his administration will return the Bini artifacts to its appropriate place and to the OBA of Benin, who is the rightful owner and the custodian of the cultural heritage of the Bini kingdom. Because I sincerely believed that president Buhari valued the Nigeria cultural heritage, and the Bini culture included hence his administration has vested interest in the Bini artifacts.
Therefore, I commend president Buhari for his efforts so far, and he should do the needful of returning the artifacts to the OBA of Benin upon their arrival to Nigeria.
And to allocate money for the preservation process of the artifacts based on the OBA’s preference instead of through private entities, as envisioned by the Edo governor.
Also, the governor should not be treated as pariah in my opinion, he should immediately apologize to the OBA of Benin kingdom. Because he can not forcefully take the OBA’s property and convert it to private/government holdings. And as a bini man himself he should have envisaged the implications of his actions. For this, he should apologize without further delay.
However, I commend the Benin Chief and appreciate his inputs on the matter and also the presenters of this program for their excellent lines of interview.

The artifacts belongs to the Bini people. It is for the glory for the Benin people that these things should be returned.
It is also for the glory of your tribesmen that made these artifacts too.
Kudos to your ancestors. You should be proud of your heritage. We are proud of you all.

There is no money in museum business especially in Africa. It might be gathering dust under the Oba of Benin bed. A trust of experts will best manage it. Tell me what monument the Nigerian centre for museum and monument managed well? The Nik art etc what is their value today?
