    The GTI is the only one that comes with a manual, which matters to me. Front wheeled cars make a lot of sense too... simpler in the long run. I am tempted by the GTI Clubsport for that reason but it doesn’t come in manual form. I guess that the GTI is a bit misunderstood. It is tuned for roads not track. One problem with the R is that any extras, even paint, takes you over £40K list, which is taxed higher over 5 years.

    • @TheHoosiers2008
      @TheHoosiers2008 Před 3 lety

      Import a MK8 Golf R from the US for the manual...which is odd that we’ll be the only market where that’s available.

    According to the dyno, VW is understating this car’s horsepower. If VW included the options as standard and improved the cabin (beyond leather seats), the price of the car would be comparable to the premium Audi S3. The r is quickly being recognized as a serious performance car rather than just a poor man’s BMW.

    • @krane15
      @krane15 Před 3 lety +1

      With dieselgate still looming in the background, its better to underestimate than to overestimate. After all, nobody's going to complain that you gave them too much hp.

    • @markrhoden68

      I test drove one of these loved it but the interior and as mentioned the seats are just ordinary. Once I spec a few optional extras, performance pack, big wheels leather, pan roof, it came in at 48k I'd also want the better exhaust but when the numbers got up there I'd already switched of to the Golf.
      I guess it comes down to what you want, myself I prefer a better interior over mega performance so for me the Golf wasn't a starter

  • @curtismaynard3413

    I still cant believe how profoundly expensive these are in the UK, in Canada they are listing at 47k CAD fully loaded which translates to ~27k gbp so the price of an R line (Taxes in its 57k so 32.5 k GBP)

    In the US VW has separated the GTI form the R model with a roughly $15k price difference. THAT'S why you'd consider a GTI over an R model.

    Let's take it most will put this car on finance also most will want a few optional extras if not all.
    This car is monstrously expensive, I find myself wondering with those types of numbers why wouldn't you go for the entry level A45s with its far nicer interior rather than a fully loaded Golf r

    Good review 👍🏼
    I’d be interested in your views on GTI Clubsport, very close in performance to R on all bar standing start acceleration. I’ve not yet driven either but plan to shortly as I’m looking to replace my Mk7.5 R with one or the other.
    GTI Clubsport is cheaper than R and even with a few options will sit below the £40k luxury rate for VED. R probably needs more options on it, pushing the price gap a bit wider. GTI is more economical- a consideration if the car is going to be used as a daily driver. GTI is lighter than R and may feel more characterful and exciting.
    R has AWD of course so is very surefooted and will be faster in poor conditions.
    I’ll only know which is the best option when I’ve driven both!

      Yes the car certainly needs 19” wheels and although I loved Nardo Grey and Pure Grey, the Moonstone Grey just doesn’t look right at all- cheap. Volkswizard is a good guy, tells it how it is from an enthusiast’s point of view.

    GTI are good fun. A r is a nutcase and will all ways put a smile on your face with in 30 seconds off getting in one. Had mk 7 with ps4s on around 410 bhp and 410lbs. What a car then 19 came a lot sold it love the new 8 can I have the 7s interior best off both worlds. 8 needs r performance pack and exhaust to be the next car to buy love the blue may get a black one. I will hate cleaning it all the time. Love Wing back seats off mk 5 what a car that would be 😁

  • @fgckrion
    @fgckrion Před 3 lety

    In the 7, when cornering hard, the car would initially push/understeer momentarily before power was transferred to the rear. Did you notice that happening in the 8 or is the AWD system improved?

    • @beverlybride1649
      @beverlybride1649 Před 3 lety

      I really hope they fixed that. You seem to have my experience exactly. Also my 7 would hit hard on tiny imperfections on the road. Maybe because mine was the very first ordered 2015
      I heard the 7.5 was very better

    • @MrTARIQSs
      @MrTARIQSs Před 3 lety

      Many seem to observe that the R feels rear biased due to the new AWD system with the rear wheel torque vectoring (previous gens used to have an open diff all around which may be the cause for the understeer)

    It's fast, it can do drifts, it's practical....
    .... it's boring.
    This has the same problem as the RS3, A45, Civic TypeR, i30N, etc etc etc .....
    Any fool can drive it quickly, because it sorts every issue of traction out for you. Nobody needs any skill to drive it quickly, it's too grippy, too many electronics helping you out, and the drift 'mode' is fake.
    There is no character, nothing to tame, and it's sterile.
    These cars are why I drive an M140i.

    Nice to see another colour the Lapiz blue is nice just overdone I think... disappointing they only have 3 colours for the mk8. I'm really unsure about this car... performance and drive seem exceptional, interior and infotainment looks like a nightmare. The seats look good and have received a lot of positive feedback, the infotainment system, touch sensor heating and cooling seems stupid and dangerous and hard to operate while driving. They're trying to make it too much like a phone when it's a car, and you don't use your phone fully while driving. The steering wheel shape is not very racey...and people are pressing these haptic buttons and heating steering wheel accidentally as they sit right at the 10/2 hand position... I'm disappointed they just don't seem to make the car look aggressive ever. No gas struts is a joke under the hood. My golf worth half as much has them... stupid money saver or whatever point of that was. They've cut on costs too much for a fairly expensive car. Hard plastic in the rear seats etc... do the positives outweigh the negatives that's the ultimate question! Gotta wait until 2022 at some point (who knows when) in Australia just to see the car!
