  • Side-by-side comparison! Which ultralight quilt is right for a thru-hike of the PCT? I made the switch for some very important reasons.
    In this video, I do a side-by-side comparison of both the Katabatic Gear Palisade 30 and Sawatch 15 sleeping quilts. Both are incredible quilts and perfect for thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. But which one will I be taking with me hiking on the PCT this year? As part of my gear list for the trail it's a fantastic bit of kit to get right and both are ultra-lightweight, ultra-packable for their size and so comfortable and cuddly.
    You can buy the quilts here:

    I’ve been extremely pleased with my Katabatic Flex 30. Beautiful build quality, materials that feel nice against the skin, and excellent engineering on things like the foot box baffle, snaps and zippers. Absolutely worth the money and I plan on using it for years to come. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Thank you. I must confess that the price range of these make this an exercise in just 'wishful thinking'. But the critical factor for me in long distance hiking IS weight. Weight shapes the walk into either a chore or a joy. So, if you can afford this kit, then absolutely why not!
    Your videos are very informative. Thank you for sharing.

    Thanks for the vid! I'm about to get a flex 22 or 15. I'm back and forth between the two. I'm afraid the 15 will be too hot in the warm months and the 22 will be too warm if/when it goes down to 15* F. Why did you go from a 30* to a 15* and not the Alsek 22? Comments from other viewers are welcomed. Looking forward to following you on the PCT.

      I had the same dilemma, but sounds like a 22f will be fine for me as I plan to use in UK mostly. April - October. and I still have my sleeping bag if I venture into winter camping

  • @_D1886

    I used the Alsek on the CDT and it was perfect. I used a 20F Cumulus bag on the PCT that was equally perfect. I worry that the Sawatch would be too hot on the PCT tbh, but hyoh.

      @thetrailhunter4469  Před 4 lety

      Yeah sure, I guess with a quilt I can stick out a limb or two if I get too hot and then if it's chilly I have a warm quilt. Haha and yes, always HYOH folks!

      @barondavis5692 Před 4 lety +2

      Hey Dan, so your opinion for a thru hike on AT, PCT or CDT would be the flex 22 over the flex15? What type of sleeper are you; cold, avg., warm?

  • @expatadventureturkey9324

    Having the ability to have an extra quilt is nice especially on that is warmer, my only problem is when I pack the warmer one it is a bit harder to pack into the pack takes a little more room, Any pro tips?

    • @thetrailhunter4469
      @thetrailhunter4469  Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah the Sawatch is much puffier. I tend to pack it in the bottom without a stuff sack or packing pod and it takes up more negative space. Maybe put your clothes in the quilt first and that will save room instead of having a dry bag for the clothes.

    Will probably be going for either an 2 oz overstuffed Alsek or a Sawatch for my CDT Thru next year! I sleep quite warm but probably worth the weight for the comfort!

  • @MrDanAng1
    @MrDanAng1 Před 4 lety

    For a Catabatic Gear quilt, I would go for the Chisos.
    But I'm a warm sleeper, I currently use an Enlightened Equipment Revalation 50F quilt for all my 3-season hiking, well into the shoulder seasons, I've used it plenty of times in close to frost and even in frost with a fleece shirt and an extra pair of socks without problems.
    If I was to hike the PCT, I would add a puffy jacket and down booties for added warmth on mountain crossings with known sub freeze conditions for added warmth, and I would be fine with the EE revalation... or the Chisos if I would go for a CG quilt.
    The added possibility of multiple/wider range of uses is a welcome bonus.
    On the other hand, to save a few ounce of sleeping gear and literally loose sleep over it isn't worth it, I gladly add a few ounces on a wide sleeping pad because I know I get a poor sleep on a regular sized one, so my sleep system in total weigh as much as if I had a regular sized pad and a 30F quilt.

      I sure like them, and it works for me.
      But I sure doesn't say it's the best solution for everybody, most people sleep much colder than me.
      It's the solution I would go for personally, just reinforce a less insulated quilt for the few cold nights as long as the quilt is warm enough for the regular nights.
      For you, if the 30F quilt is comfortable most nights, say 90-95% of the nights on the PCT, it might be a good idea to just use some extra reinforcements for the 5-10% nights that is colder.

    Those prices are something else! If you are going to go for US suppliers have you ad a look at Enlightened Equipment or UGQ?
    They do quilts with the same specs for virtually half the price of the Sawatch.

    • @boomnerd
      @boomnerd Před 4 lety +1

      I recently got a Katabatic Flex 22 for $310 (850FP). Compared with EE and UGQ's, it is much cheaper, IMO. It is because that Katabatic prices include all the features and accessories (and no sales tax or shipping fee). Considering many add-on's and missing features, EE or UGQ did not make sense. Also, due to temperature rating difference, 10F of EE/UGQ may be compared with Katabatic 22. I am glad that I went with Katabatic. Just my opinion.

      I've used EE quilts and UGQ and finally settled on the Sawatch and Palisade for year round use. The quilts from EE and UGQ are both excellent quality, and do a great job. Katabatic, is kind of on another level though... They're so much warmer for temperature rating, more comfortable (IMO), and overall just a higher quality. There is a lot I could say about the reasons I prefer them over both EE and UGQ, but I will just say that I believe it is worth the additional cost :)
