  • Sean from Cranborne Audio explained their modern take on vintage audio, and their aim to create modern classics. Their Camden 500 a fully-discrete, transformerless design featuring their custom Camden preamp topology designed by Cranborne's Director of Engineering Edward Holmes, and we got to see it in situ with selected modules demonstrating their vision of a vintage studio in a box, all running from one cat 5 cable.
    CAST is Cranborne Audio's own analog over cat 5 protocol which provides plug and play connectivity between all their products, and the N8 distribution box is the fully passive central hub to any CAST enabled studio, allowing clutter-free patching between units giving audio in, out and headphone monitoring through a single wire.
    Available now.
    Camden 500 Series Microphone Preamp Price: 349 USD
    N8 Price: 148 USD
    N22 Price: 99 USD

    This stuff is awesome. If I could afford it, I would create a studio with the 500R8.

    Stick that N8 in a rack and give us 16 channels of conversion with adat and some sort of network card option for a $1k....done deal.

    • @nkozi
      @nkozi Před 2 lety

      That would be quite good! That said these N8s are only $150 apiece

    • @metalplatedfacejob
      @metalplatedfacejob Před 2 lety

      @@nkozi exactly, put two in a rack with some conversion and routing matrix and it is good to go.

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio Před 2 lety +2

      @@metalplatedfacejob It's a neat idea... but you basically already have that system with our 500ADAT! It has an ADAT interface, CAST routing, and 500 series slots (that you can bypass if you want!).
      Otherwise, you can connect N8 to ANY converter you would like to match your budget! You can also mount two N8's together in a single rack using our rack mount kit - so you can achieve roughly what you want now! Thanks for the comment (and idea!!) 👍 CA

      @@cranborneaudio I do understand what the other units do but buying two adat boxes for 3k plus tax when all you want to do is get existing gear into the eco system and or converted is a bit overkill. What I am suggesting is a converter box with your patch bay N8 minus the bells and whistles, mixer/500 power/ headphones. Give it a digital option slot on top of the Adat for networked audio/ Dante/ AES/ AVB etc...something simple that is not crazy overpriced..I think your converters sound nice and spec well is all, why not give people a taste without having to jump into 500 series. What other things do people need in a studio that are utility? Maybe throw some unbalanced to balanced turn arounds on board? I own one of your R8's already by the way and I think it is fantastic. How about a desktop monitor controller that support REW measurements per out put? I still want an EQ and a comp from you guys and hopefully a mixer some day. Just want to see you guys do well, thanks.

      @@metalplatedfacejob Thanks for the kind words mate - we always love to hear suggestions! We have nothing on the horizon close to what you are saying, but can see the benefit. I don't think we could achieve anything close price-wise to what you want but its certainly food for thought! But if its more modules you're after... watch this space!!

  • @jeandista
    @jeandista Před 2 lety +1

    The N8 is definitely a very cool piece of gear. Such a shame that the summing is strictly related to the specific module installed on each channel, it would be fantastic to have the 8ch sum regardless of that. If you want to use the N8 as a summing mixer you are likely to need 8 identical high quality 500 line preamp module, but i would assume most people may be interested to use it as a complete portable studio rack filled with PREs, EQs, TAPE emulator or COMP, or for serious stereo bus processing.

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio Před 2 lety +4

      Hi there! The N8 can be used wherever and however you would like! The N8 itself is just a patching system using Audio over Cat 5, but can be integrated into anything you want!
      If you are referring to the 500R8 and 500ADAT racks, I hear what you're saying, however many of our users love the fact that they can almost create their own summing mixer using the modules. Our summing mixer was designed to be super-clean to accommodate the modules and let them do the colouring! Some people load it with 8x 1073's, 8x EQ's, or a mixture for their stems and can then tailor their summing sound exactly how they want it - which is pretty cool! Thanks for the kind words mate! CA

    I was a little put off by the slogan because it REEKS of vst's pretending to be analog, but everything they showed off was super cool! I'll be keeping an eye on these guys for sure!

    YA....but you make it sound like analog audio over CAT-5/6/7 is new (or you may have alluded that it is your own creation). It's been around...just look up any Dave Rat videos. That said, you do make some great stuff. I hope your "CAST" system uses the other CAT-5/6/7 protocols on the market. I would buy a 4 port/16 channel-to-DB25 break-out box.

    • @cranborneaudio
      @cranborneaudio Před 2 lety +1

      Hey! We certainly aren't the first to do this of course! But we are one of the first to make it tightly integrated with our studio products like mic preamps and our 500R8 and 500ADA! We ;love the tech and think it really solves a problem many face in their studios! The less cabling... the better! Thanks mate! CA
