  • Dhal is almost a staple in Indian households as an accompaniment to almost every meal - from curry to biryani and even fried eggs. Also the best to just eat on it's own, whether it be like a thick split pea soup or
    with rice or butter bread!
    Ingredients
    1 cup Dhal
    3lt water
    1 tbs rough salt
    1/2 tsp hurdee
    For Braising:
    1/4 cup oil
    2 tbs margarine
    2-3 dried chillies
    3 cloves garlic, crushed
    1 med tomato, grated
    1 med onion
    1/2 tsp jeera
    1/2 tsp mustard seed
    handful of curry leaves
    Dhania and spring onion to garnish
    Dhal can be served with almost any curry or meal. Many variations of dhal can also be made including adding brinjal, sour herbs and even green mango.
    Enjoy!

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před rokem

      We boil the dhal until it is soft and then freeze it, which results in smoother dhal when we braise it. Leaving it firm means it will remain grainy after defrosting and cooking.

    is it the finished dahl you freeze in portions or did you just mean the cooked yellow split peas you freeze in portions ?

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před 2 lety +1

      We freeze dhal that we boil. So we boil the dhal with the hurdee and sometimes with salt. And we freeze that.

  • @bleacherz7503
    @bleacherz7503 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Can you explain the freezing and rehearing? Thx

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před 8 měsíci

      If we are boiling larger quantities of dhal we don't add the salt and hurdee and we boil it until the dhal is cooked. We then make smaller portions and freeze them. When we are braising we pop a portion into the pot and add a little bit of water and it will melt. When it comes to a boil again we braise just like this video.
