Higurashi the original is the only anime that will genuinely scare you and that’s ok no other anime has able to scare me like that. I was also 16 when I watched it. Memories and Mononoke didn’t do much for me at all. I just watched to watch no excitement.
He missed "Another", but this is still a great list.

Im pretty surprised Another is not here. It's a serious masterpiece when it comes to storyline and horror
I think the only thing Another has going for it is the atmosphere and gore (Which lends to horror but I don't think it's scary, just spooky!)

Im surprised "Made in abyss" isnt on here, not only is it just a phenomenal adventure anime, with top tier world building, it also has some of the freakiest moments in anime, that will have you in shock with how disturbing it can be.
I get that it isnt much brighter then a lot of these in many aspects, but half of these shows wont have me at the edge of my seat in shock like Made in abyss did.
Made in abyss is not horror ! ,There is only a few scenes where is a bit gore,but nothing special.Yea ,its a grate adventure anime in the first part,then it keep getting borring.And was also mentioned by vinitube in top adventure animes.
@@AthozOrion Damn i swear MAL had it tagged as horror before, but now labelled as gore. But ya gore tag definitely serves it more justice. Although i would have never guessed Tokyo ghoul was considered horror, just felt edgy to me more then it did horror. So i was looking at it like "made in abyss had me more freaked out then these anime" but ya that doesn't mean horror.

@@superbelo Even with the gore tag, I still say horror is a proper tag for it. Very few series lean into the lovecraftian vibes as well as MIA has, the sense of the unknown, and the utter inhumanity of the abyss, and the depths, how humanity is trivialized and shown to be nothing more than just another (weak in this case) creature, and having to become something more than human in order to compete with the terrors of the depths. It makes the characters feel small, and smaller still since the main cast is a group of kids. Horror isn't just being scared, it's being anxious, unsettled and uncomfortable, which is something that so many people forget about horror as a whole. It easily has moments of psychological horror and intense scenes of body horror too.
Athoz up above me there probably hasn't delved much past season 1, the statement of 'it kept getting boring' is a statement that I can't even remotely get, as things only get more intense as things go on.

Great list! Dorohedoro blew my mind when I finally watched it. One thing about anime I've learned, no matter what the genre at least one of the characters grips you and pulls you into the story and makes you like it lol. I've watched very few series that I didn't at least enjoy. No matter what genre.
It's worth noting that the Vampire Hunter D you showcased is subtitled 'Bloodlust.' The first Vampire Hunter D film was released in 1985 and is just as good as Bloodlust.

As a huge fan of horror anime, this was a solid list. I'd also add Corpse Party, if you want to see a 90s horror movie in anime form. Also Glepnier and Faces of Death were clearly horror inspired. And for Isekai horror, Re:Zero and Overlord.
I’ve always found it strange that given how many influential J-Horror films have been out there like The Ring and The Grudge, there aren’t many pure horror anime to complement their cinematic counterparts. Most so-called “horror” anime are more horror action or psychological thriller. Only few examples seem to exist to my knowledge many of which are works of Junji Ito.
I think it's worth mentioning that Blood+ is a spinoff of a f***ing excellent short film called Blood: The Last Vampire. You must watch the film, it's a rare example of an anime that uses visual storytelling rather than relying on rambling mid-action dialogues for exposition.
Whats truly wild is Perfect Blue is 10 times more relevant today than when it came out. Its a fantastic movie

Awesome! Parasyte is #1 on a list for once! I honestly thought the first episode of Parasyte was pretty interesting and I'm hoping to watch the rest of the series when I get a chance!
Being on the older spectrum of anime/manga fans, of course Akira is in my top 5 movie faves.and having a subscription to heavy metal magazine through high school,"I won't give the years I'll just say that the bones brigade was big and the search for animal chin was in full effect!" Anyway, it helped keep me up to date with all the good stuff that was either in,coming up,or watch it if you haven't yet.Hellsing Ultimate is my absolute favorite in the Vampire Anime realm. Every time I watch it it hits me like the first time again.

What’s shown is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The original Vampire Hunter D movie is also fantastic especially if you like Akita, Perfect Blue and older beautiful anime movies. Personally I think the plot is better as well
So glad to see Mononoke on here, I love it. Shout out to Another though, it's gory and shocking but also worth a rewatch to catch things you missed the first time

Higurashi is genuinely my favourite series ever. Like the 2020 version aside, it was a master of horror and mystery and genuinely scared the shit outta me.

A lot of these aren't horror anime but action/science-fiction/comedy anime that happen to have horror elements in varying amounts.
Top saddest in horror anime in my choice is:

6. Umineko naku kuro ni (same as higurashi)
7. Elfen lied
You have some interesting and unecpecting, but also some unfitting picks. I was hoping to find ghost hound, even though it gets a bit Shonen like to the end, the beginning took hard.
Also I could recommend monster (even if it's more like a thriller), gantz, another, aoi bungaku series, biohunter, blood c, bokura no (is more mecha, but has its really dark moments) , elfenlied, Karas, Tokyo maijin gakuen kenpucho. Maybe you can do a second list.
Ghost Hunt was one of my favorite series, to bad they never made a second season of this, the Manga is finished and the ML in the series is being explained why he started up SPR and why the FL sees 2 versions of the ML, one nice and smiling the other cold or sarcastic. Before you watch Blood + the series you actually need the watch the movie first, its kinda as the same thing as Nobless and Rurouni Kenshin (Film: Samurai X).

Dark Gathering belongs on this list. Its new and finds new ways to haunt my dreams every week lol. Even has its own resident Yandere. Next weeks ep is gonna be wild
The fact that every episode of Dark Gathering manages to top the prior one in horror+gore+ fucked up stories that somehow manages to become even worse as me hooked in this show and i consider a crime its not in this list.

Bruh Parasyte is one of the most underrated shows out there. It is popular but in my opinion it needed to be much more. It has been like 3 years since i watched it i still can remember emotion that show gave me like nothing before actually. Melancholy, empathy and a lot more. Song "Next To You" boy oh boy, that song alone can give u inexplicable emotion..
Honestly, the anime prob didn't get the love you think it should've,cause the manga was way better and the anime might not have really done it justice. Idk, I read it way before the anime, so idk if its the anime is good or not, Ive heard mix reviews.

If you recommend Mononoke, slide Ayakashi in there ---That's where Mononoke spun-off from. But this is a solid list, I approve! lol But each entry is a solid selection for the horror genre.

Was it Hell Girl that had a episiod where a girl, her mom and her dad were handing out posters trying to find her missing sister in the beginning? The gate Hell Girl takes the dammed through looks like s gate in a anime I watched years ago but I only got to see one episiod before I could even find out the name of the anime.
And the Vampire Hunter D movie on the list was the second movie not the first one. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust if I remember right. (But I think the comments might have already pointed this out lol. ) The first film was made in 1985.

Hellsing Ultimate, Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte and Mononoke I wouldn't either classify as horror
Akira and Berserk I would probably classify as horror to some extent, but not fully.
Those are the only ones I've watched. However I will not, just because there's murder or even gore, it doesn't necessarily classify as horror

IMO you missed Heavenly Delusion, Summertime Render and Erased, 3 masterpieces.
I agree with Promised Neverland Season 1 and Parasyte. Tokyo Ghoul was great up to the RE. Zom 100 is a great anime but I would hardly consider it horror.

Higurashi is a slice of life kind of horror the theme of mystery and the plot is much to tell the story in the rural area. the title franchised had adaptation based in manga.

As much as Zom100 seems great i cant get over the choice to make the blood look like multicoloured paint. It just takes me right out of it.

S1 of Promised Neverland IS SO FKN GOOD. S2 honestly barely captivated me and im still yet to finish it.

Wanted to start The Promised Neverland but when I read season 2 isn't following the manga and people didn't like it I didn't even start with the anime and I'll just read the manga
Is not a horror (i think) but ryly cool anime was "Shin Angyo Onshi" not many of people heard about it but manga was amazing and i got as gift a dvd whit i think 3 episodes as one on it , sadly i hav no idea if they make more but sttory and the style of it was ryly cool is worth a watch.
