  • This lesson might be a bit difficult to follow, so I tried to include many example sentences so that you can put into practice what we learned right away. Also, ‘ Verb + 서’ expression is used more often (in spoken Korean) than Verb + (이)기 때문에, so please don’t worry too much if you find verb conjugation with 때문에 a bit hard. 때문에 is more used in “Noun + 때문에 (blaming Noun)” expression, which I cover at the very last part of this lesson, so if you understand that one easily, it’s already a good progress :) 파이팅!!!
+) I forgot to include that you can also put “왜냐하면” before “-때문이에요” phrase. So when you are answering to the question “왜 벌써 퇴근해요?(Why get off work already?)” you can answer “몸이 안좋기 때문이에요” like we learned but also “왜냐하면 몸이 안좋기 때문이에요” works too. But you can’t say “왜냐하면 몸이 안좋기 때문에 일찍 퇴근해요(x)” because by putting 왜냐하면, you are already making it a full sentence. 왜냐하면 is pronounced (wae-nya-ha-myun). You can also just say 왜냐면 (wae-nya-myun) without 하.
+) there’s also "verb+ -(으)니까" expression which means the same as verb+ -서, and we’ll cover that later

Make no mistakes ! We shall claim you as the greatest Korean tutor in CZcams. The patience you put up with us, the degree of effort of breaking down in to the simplest term yet entertaining way of teaching are tremendously remarkable. Kindly carry on more lessons just the way it is or even better. ( which we believe you will within your capacity) Note that we’ll always be the reason for you to propel further. Last but not least, you would be the only reason to see great improvements in our Korean language. 너무 감사합니다 선생님! 💕

I like how you introduced ~아/어서 as "therefore" first! :) In my classes, I see many students get confused with the sentence structure for reasoning. People tend to switch the order of reason and result since English order is "result + because + reason" whereas in Korean it's "reason + 아/어서 + result". I always tell them to remember the form as "SO"... [reason + so(아/어서) + result]. Knowing where ~아/어서 comes from definitely helps to remember the correct order of the sentence!

I am 26 year-old guy, and turning 27 next year (February 18) and I felt that I can’t learn any language anymore. I was hopeless until I came across to your channel (and Korean Unnie too.)
Since subscribing to you I felt that I can still progress myself into the language even it’s late. I finally know few Korean words and I can conjugate some verbs because of these lessons. Thank you so much. I am inspired. Like I said before I am decided to learn this language because of TWICE. And I know this will benefit me if ever I decide to work in South Korea after few years. 🙏🙏

Another helpful video. Thank you! But I'm having a hard time finding videos on all of the others uses for 서.
My teacher in class couldn't explain it, maybe lack of time or english, I don't know. But that's why I come to your lessons so often over and over again, to supplement my classroom.
I said "책 읽어서 쉬요" to mean "I read and then I rest" because we learned it means "and then" as well as "because." But my teacher said this is wrong. She just said it sounds strange and unrelated without giving an explanation. Then she said try again. So I said "요리해서 쉬요" and she said this was wrong too, without explanation. She then addressed the whole class and said it can only be used with "this verb, this verb, that verb" giving us a list of 7 verbs that we had learned already. That made it even more unclear, until I watched over 2 hours of CZcams videos. To learn that there are 3 usages and the one she was talking about only uses action verbs, but she didn't say that and our text book doesn't say it.
Now I understand a little more, but not at a depth that helps me be able to use it very well in conversations.
I understand the usage in this video, and I watched other channels that cover the other usages, but they didn't in the detail that you do, so I still am not 100% sure how to use it.
Request : could you make a video of only 서 and its usages?

I'm glad you made this video. Thank you so much! But may I ask one question? In a Present stem + 서 example (let me tell you one of the example in advance : Because I studied hard), why does 'study' take a first place over the 'hard' when the normal sentences pattern placing the adverb in front of the verb?
I will be very grateful if you feel like to answer :)

Good question!👏 Actually it's not entirely wrong to say that, but it's more natural to say 덕분에 which is the closest in meaning to "thanks to." So the right usage of "N 때문에" is usually when you're talking about sth negative, while "N덕분에" is used for positive context.

I have a question, at 5:48 I would have expected the answer to be 열심히 공부해서요. Is that incorrect? I'm trying to understand why in this case 공부하다 verb was divided in two.
