HOW TO REUPHOLSTER A VICTORIAN CHAIR | UPHOLSTERY FOR BEGINNERS | FaceliftInteriors - Jak na to + styl
The wood glaze is beautiful and really looks great with that pretty velvet. Putting out free videos takes a lot of extra time--thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much, that’s very kind. Thank you for watching 😊👍🏻
I never thought a glue gun would work. The chair looks fantastic!
This is the best reupholstery how to video I've ever seen! So simple or simplified in your video. ❤🎉😊 love it. Keep doing a great job!
That’s very very kind, thank you Rebekah! Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 😊🙏🏻
You are amazing! You just helped me figure out an important step that I've been missing. I wish I could apprentice with you. You're like an old time Master Upholsterer.
Thank you Patricia, I really appreciate it. Glad to be of service 🙏☺️📌🪡🧵✂️
All that beautiful work, with a depressing fabric. Go bold and bright, give that old lady a smile. I take the fabric off and make a template so I have the a good patternless. You may watch “Chair Whimsey” for an idea of what I’m saying. She is amazing, and so are you...but choose gorgeous fabrics. Love you hard work!!!! Thank you
Hi Bonnie, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! The customer chose the fabric! I know what you mean about using the old fabric as a template but as this chair is quite simple cutting-wise, I didn’t think it was necessary but I definitely do do that for other more complex pieces. But thank you for the kind comment!!
I love this fabric. 😀 Wonderful work. I try to emulate you but you make it look easy and it isnt always!! Lol Fabulous craftsmanship - thank you for sharing!
Totally agree. The grey is hideous. Useful video though.
Imagine not knowing that people have different styles, and differing tastes. I absolutely love that fabric, and it would go wonderfully in my slightly Victorian inspired grey and black room. Beautiful work!
👏🏾👌🏾
Hey Neil, found your channel a few weeks back, took it upon myself to refill my sagging leather couch with foam and polyester, added new webbing using the upholstery nails n a mallet. Had to work from bottom of the couch to top as it is a non removable seat cushions and back cushions. I think the sofa is over 20 years I think I’ll get another 10 out of it. Thanks for your very knowledgeable videos about the materials and methods of work. Good luck for 2023.
That’s great to hear, thank you for sharing! So glad my videos are helpful enough for people to follow. Have a great 2023 and I’ll see you in the new year with some new (hopefully helpful 😆) videos!
Killer!!! Love it and the professional perspectives on each project! Ty!
Thank you so much!! That’s very kind 😊👍🏻
Great looking chair! Love the updated finish and fabric.
Thank you so much!!
Love the new look of that chair. Awesome!!
Thanks a lot Kevin 😊👍🏻
Wonderful work. Thanks for all the tips. It amazes me how you can use thousands of staples and they all go through no problem.
Glad you found it helpful! Thank you for watching Hazel 😊🙏🏻
Wow! Very modern take on that chair. I love it!
Thank you Jilly 😊🙏🏻
You are so talented! 🙌🏻😃
And I’m sure I’m not the only one who is really thankful that people like yourself take the time and effort to make these videos for us amateurs to watch 🙈
And you’re also so polite, even to the people giving unnecessary comments. Keep up the great work and the fantastic personality! 💪🏻👏🏻🔨✂️
❤️ this comment just made my day, thank you so much it means a lot. Happy that all the hours that go into these are really helping people. Thank you again ☺️🪡📌📐✂️
Are you using a power gun nail/stapler? What brand please? I just bought a lovely Eastlake parlor chair with hideous 70s fabric on it.
👏You nailed it, and I thank you for sharing it!
That’s very kind, thank you! And thank you for watching 😊👍🏻
Sweet! Thank you for the info and for the humor!

Great work and just what I needed to learn
Glad you found it helpful! Thank you for watching 😊🙏🏻
I’ve done a bit of reupholstering, but am trying my first project with added piping. I wasn’t sure what glue to use, so I appreciate your video and your example! Thanks for posting your video.
Thank you for watching, glad you found it helpful 😊👍🏻 good luck with your piping!
What is the glue for?
Beautiful job, great video tutorial! I will watch it again before I tackle my first chair! Thanks so much for sharing your talent!

I have a chair like this from my grandma was going to give away but after watching this. It definitely needs a good home
That’s what I like to hear 😊🙏🏻
Good work. Thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you for watching! 😊🙏🏻
Love that fabric
Thank you! 😊👍🏻
Looks good 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!! 😊🙏🏻
Beautiful chair. I love the style of it and were it mine, I would have guilded it especially with your choice of the black and grey fabric. Thank you
That’s very kind, thank you Gail! Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 😊🙏🏻
Fabulous
Great instructional! I wish you would have shown how you did the small upholstery pieces on both arm rests though. I have a similar chair that I’d like to DIY reupholster and I’m scared I won’t reapply the new fabric correctly in those 2 areas. I do appreciate how much foam you put into the chair, it looks very comfortable. Well done!
Hi Michele, we have an academy we are building at the moment which will go through all the things you talked about. Keep your eyes peeled! 🧵✂️📐📌🪡👌
A nap is a sleep, eh? I thought it was a Kip! Haha great video!
Technically we call it a pile. 🤷♂️🤣
Thanks so much! 🧵✂️📎📐⛏️🙏😊
Excellent work
Thank you Dione 😊🙏🏻
Superb
I'm going to be reupholstering a couch and chair soon, so taking a lot of notes from your videos. very handy!
I'm from Canada, and hadn't heard of hessian fabric before, but looking it up, I see I'll have to find an alternative if I want that layer, because I am allergic to burlap! lol.
I actually work in a fabric store, but three of us on staff are allergic to the couple bolts of burlap we keep in stock, haha
Hi Laura, Many thanks for your comment. Bet that's fun at work when those orders come in?! 🤣🧵📐⛏️📎✂️
Spectacular❤
That’s very kind Ruby, thank you! And thank you for watching 😊🙏🏻
HI there, Love your video, so helpful and easy to follow. What staple gun would you recommend I buy? Many thanks.
your good upholstery work I like 👍 because I am also sofamaker upholsterer
Beautiful 😍
Thank you Poppy! 😊🙏🏻

Spiegazione eccelsa.. grazie 😊
sono felice che tu l'abbia trovato utile: grazie per la visione 😊
Very NICE...
Thank you very much 😊🙏🏻
Just discovered you and you are by far the clearest and most helpful upholstery master Ive come across on CZcams. Thank you so much!
As as someone without an air stapler do you have a recommendation for an electric one?
Hiya, ahh thankyou much appreciated 😊. Yes my recommendation is don't use an electric staple gun, there isn't enough power in them to get into hard wood and I just keep hearing bad things. You can pick up a compressor and staple gun up for around £200 so if you can afford it I would go for that. 😊🙏⛏️✂️🧵
Love your work and hoping to learn a lot from you. New subscriber here.
Thank you so much for subscribing and for your kind words, it means a lot 🙏🏻
@@faceliftinteriorscan you tell me or give a link for the fabric you use and the double piping please
Good bro,. Keep it up
Thank you, I will😊🙏✂️⛏️📐🧵
I was really hoping to see how the arms were done. Do you staple front and back the pull the sides? Or sides first? What thickness of foam was used on the arms?
I have just done a video of this, but it will be on the Facelift Academy once it is launched! 🙏😊✂️📐🧵⛏️
nice job, thanks for movie :)
Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
great tips no licking the paint stripper
🤪👍
I love the color of the wood glaze/stain! Do you recommend something similar I can purchase for my wooden chair project? Thank you!
Sure, it is a onyx coloured wood stain by Fiddes. Hope this helps 🙏 ✂️ ⛏️ 📎 📐 🧵
Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece. You are truly amazing 🤩
That’s very kind, thank you so much 😊🙏🏻 and thanks for watching!
Brilliant. Looks easy but will i be able to do it? I will try.
That’s what I like to hear, give it a go! 😊👍🏻
Another great video! I have an antique parlor chair from the 1800s with fabulous carving that I want to reupholster, but all the springs have been taken out, lol. I wish you could have shown how the springs go in. I just subscribed to your channel, so maybe in viewing your videos you have done that already. 😂
Thank you, I don't think this chair had springs just webbing. Oh it's definitely on the list now 😁👍🪡✂️📌🧵📐
@@faceliftinteriors I have an antique Victorian parlor chair that I had to completely dismantle because the chair itself needed to be repaired and refinished. It’s worth the work because it’s beautifully hand carved and very old-likely 1800s. It had seven or eight heavy springs that were strung with rope and nailed into the inside of the chair, as well as webbing. Getting those springs re-strung and nailed back into the chair is going to be a cute trick. 😂
Really helpful advice here, thanks. Is there anywhere I can get a stapler similar to the one you use? Or could you recommend a good starter stapler? I’ve got an electric Stanley and I find it really clunky and stiff to use 🙄. Thanks 🙏
Tacwise A7116LN Extra Long Nose Upholstery Air Stapler, Uses Type 71 / 4 - 16 mm Staples amzn.eu/d/gE5KWQp
I have a very old antique wooden lower back chair with a carved monogram C on the front facing part of the beautiful curved back. The arms are a beautiful reaised then sloping to a gorgeous SWAN's head. I bought it for my husband for a wedding gift to him. Our last name is Coleman. I will be putting a new seat on it. But the material I am using will be a thick tapestry I will be embroidering, to make it extra special. Thank you for doing this great video. Since it is so old and a blond wood that has not been stained, will be just using a bees wax on it. I want to preserve its antique integrity and quality. Often times people do too much to antiques when unnecessary. It is good to leave it the way it was intended when made. ( but I do want to say I do prefer the lighter wood for this chair you work on). From the look of the base edge of the seat of the chair, looks like it's been reuphosteted at least ten times. They were upholstery nails used. Can you still use the little black uphosrty nails? Or do you recommend staples.
Would love to see the chair, send me some pics on Instagram. I would always recommend staples, I get some people prefer to use tacks and keep the authenticity but who's going to know?! 🤷♂️⛏️📎📐🧵🧵👍
@@faceliftinteriors Cylinder or barrel @FaceLiftInteriors I would love to send some pics. It was in storage in the USA when we moved to Eire to serve as missionaries. We left it in my in-laws home along with other antiques. They both passed away and relations moved our antiques into a storage unit, but not great storage and our fine antiques recieved some damage with damp. But our swan head chair only received a small bit of friction damage; the size of a small raisen. And the blonde wood has darkened. As if it got dirty? I am unsure how to clean the swan chair. I have thought of possibly qq q super fine sand paper over it and on the friction damage. The rub in a good bit of beas wax! When I send you ths pics, take a good look at the wood colour and the friction damage, and give me your opinion please. I would really appreciate it. So glad I can finally do what I had planned for my dear hubby all those years ago. It's never too late. It got stuck inside a storage unit. We are going to fix a small bottom door on our beautiful solid oak roll top desk. It's a cylinder or barrel oak type. I can't imagine how the door started pulling apart at the dove tail joint. We also have air oak table with carved oak leaves around it and on the cross beams underneath it has panels with the same carve decoration. I won't list all of them off. I know we can't take them with us when we die, I'm just so thankful to our Lord, we can have our own furnishings back. We endeavour to store up treasure in heaven. That is serving God and serving and blessing others.
God bless you and your family !✝️🕊🙏🏻
Are the staples different sizes? Do the staples keep overlapping? I want to try to upholster my dining chairs, but affairs I'll make a mess. Love your tutorial.
No they should be all the same size, sometimes on the back I will use shorter one's as the wood is generally thinner there. Thanks for watching ☺️📐📌🪡🧵✂️
Yes, we call it the 'pile' too. Well, some of us. Or nap. But, you're right. A nap is a short sleep. I've never heard it called a 'top' though. Interesting.
Thanks for sharing! Top is the top of the pile for me! 🙏😊✂️📐🧵⛏️
Amazing! I'm in awe! I'm curious... how long did it take to do, in real time?
Hi Elizabeth, this chair took approximately 15 hours including all the woodwork. Hope this helps 🙏 ☺️ 🙏✂️📐📎⛏️🧵
Cool, think I would have gone for a softer piping, personally
I really wanted the piping to stand out 😊 but not to everyone’s taste.
@@faceliftinteriors Love the rest of it
Now I see why there are so many staples!
Now that, is one handsome chair!!!
Thanks Michael 😊👍🏻
You and that chair are fabulous! I'm trying to get up enough courage to tackle a pair of similar chairs. You made me want to try. Bravo!
Do you have link for the staple remover and grippers you used?

BTW, I have a very similar chair and I am thinking of re-upholstering it. I bought new it in the 1980's. The fabric is a tapestry vase/flower motif, with a large design centered on the back and seat, with strip-studs. I would prefer to re-upholster it in a similar fashion. That is, with a tapestry motif of some kind and strip-stud edging. How much fabric do you think it will need? BTW, I have done a bit of re-upholstering myself, including several chairs. But none like this. Anyway, thanks for any help you can give.
Hi Marige, I would say you need 3m for a chair this size to be safe. When stripping the old fabric off you will learn how it was attached originally so that's always good to do. I wish you well and thankyou for watching! 📐✂️📎⛏️🙏
@@faceliftinteriors Thank you!
Can the double piping be stapled in the middle or does it have to be hot glue?
It can but it doesn't sit as nice, also unless you sew the double piping very well you will see the staples in between the cords. ⛏️🧵📐📎✂️
❤❤❤❤
😊🙏🏻
te falto hacerle el chorizo delantero al asiento para que con el tiempo permanezca marcado sin hundimiento
No that's in the other room. 👍✂️⛏️📐📎🧵
When working with the hessian /webbing, you used the term 'lashing'. Does that mean doubling the ends over? Or something else entirely? I'm curious. Thanks!
When I say lashing I'm generally referring to tying the springs together or lashing the webbing(meaning going up and over the other webs) Hope this clears it up! 📐⛏️✂️🧵
@@faceliftinteriors Yes, I see. Thank you!
Very nice job on this chair👍🏻! How much should a person expect to pay for this type of work?🤔
Can't talk prices on here unfortunately!! For prices please email info@faceliftinteriors.co.uk
Many thanks for watching 😊👍⛏️🧵✂️
May I ask what color you used? Is that a glaze?
It's an onyx wood stain. Not paint.
Many thanks for your support. 😊🧵✂️⛏️📐
I'm working on a similar chair, but the crevices are a bit different. And I'm just doing it for a lady I clean for. I'm not an upholsterer, I'm a seamstress. Anyway I don't want to invest in a pneumatic stapler. I have an electric one, but I'm having trouble getting the safety to engage and shoot the staple where it needs to go. Help! Do yo have any advice.
My advise would be spend £150 and get a compressor and gun and air line. I have never used an electric one so I wouldn't be able to comment on whether they are any good or not. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. 😊⛏️🧵📎📐✂️
How much does something like this cost to have done?
how would you get staple around the legs?
You don't staple around the legs, you cut, pull tight and fold. 🧵⛏️✂️📎👍
@@faceliftinteriors Would be great to see it in detail in your next video.
is it possible to do this without glues?
You could staple the piping on through the middle. But IMO it looks awful! Use the Glue!!! ☺️👍🙏🧵✂️📎📎⛏️
What do I do with a chair that has the springs all sticking out? Animal hair and rotted fabric all over.
Are we stapling the foam and fabric to the wood?
Yes you are! 👍😊
@@faceliftinteriors thank you!
What about the ends of the piping, where did you start and finish them, and how did you stop? Overlapping? I’m a complete novice.
Yes sorry we didn't show that part. Keep an eye out for our new Academy which will show you all the things you need to know. Thanks for watching 😊 🙏 ⛏️✂️📐🧵
how many kilos of staples did you get through?! Nice work!
As many as needed 😉🧵✂️⛏️📐
Thanks for watching 😊🙏🧵✂️⛏️📐
If using sandpaper manually instead of electrically, what would you recommend (coming from someone who has never used sandpaper before😂😂
Definitely buy a machine. Will cost £20 and save you a whole arm!!! 👍😊✂️📐🙏⛏️
Fellow ADHD'er by any chance? 😅😊
Fab job , easy to follow too x
Hiya, my Fiance has been saying this to me for a while now. So yes Howdie 👋🫡🧵⛏️✂️📎📐
@faceliftinteriors i suspect she knows best, us ladies do haha.
Well sometimes our brain works perfectly for tasks like this . Great job!
👍👍👍👍👍✌✌✌✌
Thank you!! 👍🏻👍🏻
are you just not going to mention the blood stain on the back panel? did you staple your finger? awesome chair tho!!
🤣 I’ve done that more times than I can count but on this occasion no, it wasn’t my blood! It was wood filler where I managed to chip the wood slightly.
Man that fabric is hideous! But nice work on your part as far as construction. The red chair used to be beautiful with that original fabric…
Thanks🙏😊! I guess it's not for everyone. I like it though
IThe upholestery turned out lovely and the fabric is absolutely my style.
However 'm truly not trying to be rude, but stripping wood furniture is a whole art initself and especially with aVictoriain chair that has curves until Christmas, it can take days, I'm sure you saw that your end result was quite patchy, I'd honestly not suggest it to the client if there's a next time or out source it to a stripper (one with clothes on ;)
That paint stripper BURNS SO BAD. I had it splash on me. I thought I was going to die.
Yep, I learnt the hard way too!!
Umm, why didn't you show how to do the arms?
Lost the footage! Sorry 😞 🙏📎📐⛏️🧵✂️
How is paint stripping reupholstering?
It's part of the process if you want to do good work 👍🧵📎📐⛏️✂️
Fabulous job! But I didn't like your fabric choice.
Fair enough Kelli - it’s not for everyone 😊👍🏻
A nap is sleep to us too😅. This is a different nap!
👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏💪☕️🫖
Thank you!! 😊👍🏻
I like the fabric, but I was disappointed that you didn't show how you did the fabric on the arm rests, and I disliked that you just hot glued the piping. I personally think it would've looked better with the upholstery finishing nails. You could've used black upholstery finishing nails. I think the double piping looks too chunky surrounding the fabric, and the fact that you had to glue it just makes it worse.
Everyone’s an expert......
Glueing double piping is standard practice in Upholstery. Opinion is subjective and the customer was very pleased. Apologies for not getting the arms in this video but technical issues sometimes happen. Thanks for watching 👍✂️⛏️📐🧵
@@faceliftinteriors yeah, just my preference, I guess
Beautiful chair, beautiful wood, beautiful work... and then, that awful fabric! Don't you hate it when you can't talk a customer out of their own bad taste?
I watched the entire video just to see how the arm pads were done. Instead of showing how to do that, I had to watch 10 minutes of how to refinish the wood, which has absolutely zero to do with upholstery.
Oh I'm terribly sorry, if you could tell me your bank details id be happy to give you a refund. 🙃
@@faceliftinteriors lol
This is a replica . Real one will have flock padding with horse hair and choir, do one with the real stuff. Foam is easy
You are correct, most people won't want to pay for traditional when we can just put some foam in!
