And go figure, my daughter, when she was only 20, ended up at a street crossing in Austin with Robert Plant. She was born in 92. He and she had a short and cordial conversation. Immediately afterwards, she called me. And said "OMG Mommy, guess who I just talked to!!!!" She knew all about him. She grew up listening to Led Zeppelin She told me she had no thought of asking for his autograph. Good for her. He lived in Austin for a few years. Our daughter went to UT.

This is an exceptional example of how Led Zeppelin took the studio song, and each concert improvised and made it different every single time they performed it. Jimmy is wearing his black and gold Dragon Suit. He had several custom made suits with intricate details. This is the longest version of Dazed and Confused I’ve heard. Sometimes when Jimmy went off like this, Bonzo and JPJ would take over and force him to go along with them so the song would end. Jimmy would just get in these musical trances and play whatever his emotions created. They almost always put other songs in the middle of this song. Plant and Page loved doing call and response. Led Zeppelin live is a whole different animal than their studio albums. This is why many of us think they are the best ever.
The version they played for the movie “The song remains the same” is even better.

That was from the '73 tour....and the TSRTS version that was put out was pretty heavily edited by Page with bits and pieces of three different MSG gigs on that tour. See The Garden Tapes....

Jimmy Page has said in interviews in the past that they were always always sold out for every show ....and that just blows my mind.

They're playing Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" in the middle of the song. In another live performance, they play Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco."
It's her lyrics over music that would later become "Achilles Last Stand." But similar changes.

At Osaka on the '71 Japanese tour they played "Pennies From Heaven"! Literally nothing was out of their reach . Berkeley California '71 is another rollicking version featuring Chuck Berry's "Back in the USA", at the L.A.Forum in '72 they seamlessly inserted the as yet unreleased "Walter's Walk" and "The Crunge" into the jam sections, basically whatever night it was they played what they wanted. They don't make bands like that anymore, you have to actually be able to play to do this, thank your lucky stars somebody recorded these performances because this kind of thing will never come again.
They never do any other songs the same way live.It's amazing

The father of actor David McCallum (Man From Uncle, NCIS) was the string orchestra leader and session musician who, back when Page was also doing sessions before the Yardbirds, suggested to Page that he try a bow on the guitar.

This is just one example why Led Zeppelin is the greatest! When I saw them in 1974, I can honestly say it was the best concert I've ever seen out of around 100! This is what bands that came after wanted to be. No one comes close.

Too many mistakingly label LZ metal. As you say Lee, they are primarily Hard Rock and Blues Rock. But they can be Folk, Psychedelic, Progressive, even Pop (rarely, but not never). Or blends of any of these. And always the very best of any and all of these.
Mmm.. definitely could never say Metal, but certainly part of Heavy Metal movement, aside from all their influences they brought along.

Saw half of a show on Feb.28,1975. We got lost in the fog on the River Road going from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. The weed & the wine didn't help matters. Oh well. Half of a Zepplin show was still a treat.

I saw the 75 tour in Philly. They were amazing live. My favorite concert of all time. ✌️♥️🎶

@@L33Reacts they couldn’t but that’s my humble opinion. I am grateful to have been a teenager in the 70’s. Music was amazing and concerts were affordable. I still have most of my stubs, my Zeppelin ticket was $7.50. Luckily my Dad got the tix for me and my older brother, who was supposed to be chaperoning me. Him and his friend were tripping their faces off. I barely even touched a joint that night wanting to remember every moment. I’ve been able to see Plant dozens of times in his solo career, he’s still incredible and was close enough on a few shows to lock eyes with him, and smile at me. Their music has sustained my soul since the first time I heard them.
I was at this concert! It was amazing and I was at the 77 LA Forum Zeppelin concert! And they influenced Pink Floyd and black Sabbath and pretty much any other band! And on the album version of dazed confused Zeppelin gave birth to metal at the 3 minute mark of the song! And Zeppelin became bigger than the Beatles in the 70's!
The crowd just expected FAROUT from Zeppelin, always 🤩☮️

The worlds loudest folk band! I saw the opening night of the Houses Of the Holy American tour May 4 1973 at Atlanta Braves Stadium for $5 advance ticket. That was also the debut of Bonhams Amber Vista Lite kit.

The difference in this band is Bonham followed Jimmy...JPJ follows Bonham and rarely takes his eyes off him! Robert throws in just at the right time!!
Yup. Timing down and unbtune with each other the entire band becomes an instrument ❤ Best Band Ever ❤ They blend smoothly and always deliver. The sound man must have had a blast working with these artists! Imagine doing their concerts live and the level of creativity 😊 flowing awesomeness 🎉
I've never heard this version before and when I graduated from high school in 79', we got a "memories" book and one of the memories was "What is your favorite song?". I immediately wrote "Dazed and Confused". Awesome.

Lee, the first time I experienced this live version of D&C was from the "Song Remains the Same" live album, from 1973 (concert in 1973, album released in 1976). It is long and it has many of the elements that this 1975 version has but it is not as long as the 1975 version we just saw. LZ was always stretching for new territory, instrumentally, in the live set and the D&C epic was one of the songs they used to explore. The 1973 version is a little tighter and less explorative but it is still astonishing what an animal Jimmy Page is! His playing is pure force-of-nature!

I saw Zepp in ‘ 75 at Earls Court London…and yes they were awesome
that was their height of power right there. 75. no one could touch them at that point.
I never saw them in concert. Even though I could have. I kick myself for that.
I saw them in San Diego about a week before this concert. Brings back great memories . This is the first time I’ve seen this live version that is so similar to the San Diego one. All others have been different, but this is the closest to the version I saw. Thanks for the memories!

he is totally instrumental to their instrumental (lol) overall. he is one helluva bassist. one of the best if not the best of all time. him and chris squire would have to fight for number one lol
For me Page and Page provide the flash, but the real soul of the songs, at least the studio versions, is JPJ. He’s the one who brings soul and warmth to the music. And he is a great arranger and keyboard player.

One of my favorite versions is March 25, 1975 in LA. Another is September 4, 1970 in LA. Osaka 1971, and a few more including MSG 1973.
What Jimmy’s playing at the outset of the “Woodstock” interlude turns up later in Achilles Last Stand.

Saw Zep on this tour. Few mo before this. I was c'mon on 17. Mom asked me when I got home, "How was the concert?" Told her, "Well mama, I can die now." Ha!
I love all versions of Dazed but nothing beats the 73 MSG

LOL when Plant says Jimmy is out of the closet, Page tried picking up a woman, she said she thought him & Plant were a couple. Needless to say, she didn’t leave with Page, Plant loved picking on Page & Bonham, love his sense of humor. Dazed & Confused is a song they really can improvise on, I think it was to make fans dazed & confused. Jimmy pretty much played what he was feeling at the time, & the others followed. MSG 73 for their movie, made more sense of this, because of jimmy’s fantasy piece. Thank you for your reaction.
These are musicians jamming. As musicians will do given a chance. I feel it has as a very close relation to jazz, even if in a rock sensibility.
Never really noticed Bonham double timing the hi-hat before. That's an interesting approach and contributes in its own understated way to Zep's overall sound.
In 1975 I was at all three Los Angeles Led Zeppelin concerts. On the third night, the song lasted about 45 minutes. It was also the last concert of this leg of the tour (before a little break). Their shows were running between 3 hours and 3:15 hours but on night three they played about 3 hours 45 minutes.

When Page was a sessions musician, a violin musician asked if he ever tried using a violin bow, page perfected using it. He also had used it while in The Yardbirds, though he wasn’t the first to use one. The other guy just sawed away with it, & I don’t think perfected it.

JPJ was actually frequently visible behind and to the left of Robert Plant in a lot of that footage, especially later in it.
If you have a few days/weeks to devote to it, Led Zeppelin’s biography is an “interesting” read. Their tour shenanigans were really out there!
At 34 minutes it's "Somethings Coming" riffs from the West Side Story soundtrack.
as time goes by as I watch your videos, I can somewhat get a sense of what you have to go through and all of the shit that you have to walk through in order to get the videos posted and all of the red tape and gosh... I give you hats off because it looks like you try really hard.

They incorporated what would become Achille's Last Stand eventually.
ZEP never could recreate their songs in concert to sound like their records. They only had one guitarist on stage and the recordings had multiple overdubbed guitar parts. But still their shows were amazing, just reinterpreted.

Yes, the same would be applied for Cream, their studio recordings had multiple guitar tracks and sometimes other instruments.

It's true you're not seeing it "live", but please don't discount the fact that you ARE experiencing it now, and are very lucky to do so. Film footage of any concert back then was rare, and I'm seeing a lot of comments from us "old-timers" saying they've never seen this before.
Back then, you were either in the audience, or it never existed.
Now, with current technology and the help of CZcams and people like you, Lee, all of us (you included) are getting to experience this for the first time.
You're always saying how much you appreciate us. Well, the feeling is mutual, man. If not for you, many of us (myself included) would never have gotten to see this jaw-dropping performance.
I've seen a few Zepp videos at this point, but nothing like this. Nothing at all.

This is not Led Zeppelin at LA Forum. This is Led Zeppelin at Earl's Court on either May 24th or 25th, 1975 - in London, England. When Robert said "Jimmy was coming out of the closet" - he meant coming out of the studio sessions.
Coming out of the closet wasn't a "gay statement" yet.
That was Robert Plant's screechy laugh, which you had asked about.

You need to check out Bonham’s 20 minute live solo of Moby Dick, I think Earls Court (1975) is the best visual. He played his solo over 200 times, at some point in a 3 to 4 hour nonstop concert, it’s an amazing solo.

This performance is actually from Earl's Court in the UK. Robert often changed song lyrics when played live which is why it doesn't sound like the original and they were masters at live improvisation. They each had a showpiece number; Jonesy's was No Quarter, Bonzo's was Moby Dick, Robert's was Stairway, and Dazed and Confused was Jimmy's (obviously). They'd often incorporate other songs into their improvision - both their own as well as others (such as the CSNY song "Woodstock" that Robert begins singing) . Not only that, sometimes they would remember bits from various improvisations that would get used in future songs. LZ was considered "hard rock/heavy blues" but, incorporated other musical styles, as you heard. Jimmy always maintains that they had a musical ESP between all 4. It's evident, because you can hear that any one of them could begin taking their instrument to a different place and the others would follow. Something that greatly helped was that Jimmy and Bonzo used to regularly rehearse together so that gave Bozo the ability to follow the lead guitar any time he wanted, in addition to locking with the bass.

@@L33Reacts There isn't much concert footage in existence; the ones there are, are Danmark in 68, Albert Hall in 70, MSG in 73, Earls Court in 75, and Knebworth in 79. Otherwise, there's a few one-off, individual videos like D&C from a UK variety show but they only performed the one song, or some shaky, handheld, individual recordings like bits of video from Bath.
