That's Kaseys father Bill on the steel guitar. Newcastle Australia. Another Aussie gem..
I'm a 60 year old Australian female and I literally tear up everytime I hear Kasey sing this. This is an extraordinarily powerful performance from an amazing woman 🙌👏👏
Did anyone else notice the keyboard player completely lost in the moment? Unf**king believable. Best cover ever.
I didn't until I read your comment. Thank u! He's def lost in the music.
Kaceys father
Yes Kaseys dad plays the lap slide steel guitar ❤️🔥 And agreed- the keyboardist went IN! 🔥😆
It’s actually better the second time you hear it, after the shock has worn off and you listen to it again you feel all the emotions she puts in.
And it's just as good on the 100th listening 🎶
@@donnam5891 agreed 😁
The best cover ever, and one of the greatest musical performances of all time.
Kasey's another of our national treasures🇦🇺 . The youngest person to be inducted into the ARIA hall of fame. She has such a huge catalogue. Have a listen to "Ain't no little girl ", "The Captain", "Not pretty enough ", just for starters. ❤.
Amazing woman, a wounded soul with huge talent and a heart of gold, she found herself in that song! The honesty is incredible, wow, she ain't no little girl anymore! 🙋👍
I love her interpretation of the song. She totally made it her own. Eminem brought the lyrics but Kasey brought the emotion with such intensity.
What I would say is so did he but people hear the relentless Rap cadence and dont really listen to what he's saying - the fear was always there as was the transition to anger and fierce determination but the driving rythym of Rap hid the subtler emotional beats. Thats the true beauty of this - she hasn't changed it or what it's saying but by making the stylisitc choices she has she's thrown it into stark relief and made those emotional beats hit home so much harder.
So glad you reacted to this Charlie. Kasey's been a country/bluegrass singer & songwriter for 20+ years but as you see, easily crosses genres. She loves Eminem, and really highlights what a great lyricist he is, with this arrangement. She brings a whole new level of vulnerability, pain, anger, defiance to his song, coz she's lived it too. That's her Dad on the steel guitar. If you want to explore any of her vast catalogue of own songs, you could listen to "Ain't No Little Girl" (Bluegrass Underground Season version), "Captain", and for some whimsy, "Pony" (Official Video). Thanks again Charlie.
That's our Kasey ❤ Aussie Very clever artist singer song writer ❤
Kasey has always had a unique voice, even as a young lady.....as a fan I describe it as perfectly imperfect.
Oh that's a fantastic way to put it!
Best
Cover
Ever
🇦🇺
It’s EPIC!!!!!!!!! I’m absolutely stunned by this!!❤
Kasey feels every one of Em's lyrics, so raw and emotional. She has lived them.
This version shows the song's emotions in a unique way, from the heart-wrenching wails of how things can go wrong on stage at the start of the song to the anger in the last verse and chorus. Kasey is truly amazing.
Eminem brings the anger - Kasey brings the angst. She leaves her heart on stage every time.
Kasey is as real on stage as she is in person. She wears her heart on her sleeve, in this case dirty, sweaty and raw.
Are you wondering how she is feeling?? She just showed you!
Eminem made this song iconic but it took Kasey Chambers to make it EPIC!!
G'day mate from Australia.
I've heard this song (reacted to and otherwise) AT LEAST 50 times and I have a VISCERAL reaction to this version every, single, time. I'm old enough that I was an adult when Em released this...Casey's version hits completely different as life has jaded my once hopeful disposition....its more like ONE MORE FKN SHOT...tha's all I've got and then FK it.
Who knew a lap steel and power cords on a banjo would work so well on this?!
Kasey Chambers is an accomplished Australian country singer-songwriter, who has won multiple awards and accolades for her work. Kasey is a huge Eminem fan, and during Covid she reworked Eminem's rap song into her own song; Eminem's rap approach is more reactive, whereas Kasey's version is more emotive. It's referred to as a Rock-Ballad, a mix of country, blues and rock.
The beauty of this is all those emotional beats were always there but the relentless cadence of rap didn't lend itself to conveying them. By slowing it down by around 40% in those early verses and letting it breathe you can hear the fear that was always there and can see how over the course of the song it grows into anger and then fierce determination. I am 100% sure Mathers himself would love this because it highlights just how good his songwriting actually is. Nobody who hears this can be left in any doubt that the guy really can write powerful lyrics.
"Devil or Angel, you, whoever you are, I love you, I love you, I love you."🎶😉
Casey is an award winning Australian country singer who started her career very young in her father’s band and debuted in the late 90’s to great accolade going on to be l think the youngest artist to be inducted into the Australian Music Hall of Fame.
Thanks for your reaction, Charlie.
This was recorded at the last Australian show of Kasey’s Behind the Barricades tour, which had been postponed from 2021 due to COVID restrictions. The tour was to celebrate 20 years since the release of her acclaimed Barricades and Brickwalls album in 2001. I believe Lose Yourself was one of her encore songs consistently on this tour (it certainly was played in Canberra) and Kasey and her people decided to record it in Newcastle. I understand the audience was told in advance it was going to be recorded and it’s a theatre with riser seating, so not conducive to standing and going off! Kasey put the call out on social media for fans’ footage of the song to mix in with the footage that had been taken (most of the black and white stuff). Her dad, Bill Chambers, is on the slide guitar, and Brandon Dodd on lead guitar.
While Rap 'Purists' may not like this, Kasey's emotional, heart-felt performance is stunning.......sung from a female perspective, she takes Eminem's words and makes them her own.......artists do covers (1) to pay respect to the original and (2) interpret that song personally.....Kasey does both ...............
Nah we like it. If it’s done this well and conveys the story with the same gravity and respect it’s epic. Obviously it’s a different arrangement but it’s incredible I want to see an Eminem react to it.
Hahaha! Well, Eminem likes it well enough. He gave her permission to release her version on Spotify. She brought a lot of respect to each line of these lyrics and you can feel that. She played this song like it owed her money!
@@rca6576 Too true.......you know, I think most great artists respect other performers putting their spins on the original, if it's as good as this, Em included........
@@larryc3860 I don't think some people understand how much Eminem meant to Kasey. She's talked about it numerous times and always says how much she has always loved his writing, she frequently would play his songs in her home. She was a true fan of his work. The way she delivers this is with a lot of love and respect..
@@rca6576 well said........it's impossible to do this without mutual respect between the originator and the artist doing essentially a tribute performance........
This Newcastle is in Australia (John Farnham isn't our only treasure down here).
Glad you got around to it mate. Probably the 60-70th reaction this old bugger has seen. The YOUNG lady digger1610, yep, young, I'm 83 well closer to 84 and this song gets me every time.Great reaction friend. Until this, my favourite Kasey song used to be "Rattlin Bones'' but it's been knocked well and truely off the perch by this song....
This one of those rare occasions when it just works. I love how the song takes you through a journey of emotions and the bands performance is very committed as you can see them putting in 110%. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did 🎉
Em wrote the words and it took twenty years for someone to write the music and sing the song how it should be sung. Great job Kasey.
I think that's a massive stretch. This version is amazing but let's not get carried away. The original was written in the context of battle rap. This version does not portray the appropriate vibe for that context
From the movie context of a rap battle you are right Charlie but from a pure lyrical point of view I totally agree with Neil.
The lyrics are in three stages. Anguish and despair at your life being pretty shit. Then it ramps up to the realisation that you need to do something about it coz your the only one that can make the difference to your daughter. THEN , the anger and passion of the battle as you take on your opponent.
I respect your thoughts as always but if you listen to it a few times, or a hundred.. the layers of the performance stand out. I hope you get to see "ain't no little girl"
It might be bc I’m 55, and raised in the South USA, Em’s version was the city, this is the country version ❤ ……it is So Many Beautiful Things all wrapped up in history ❤🎉❤
@@TheCharlieSmithChannel I think you are missing the truth of his lyrics - he delivered them in the context of Rap battles but that was never really what it was about for him. The whole thing is an attempt to give you a small insight into how he thinks and feels. From the fear and trepidation to frustration and anger to fierce determination. In Rap it all comes off as angry and determined because of the driving cadence but the lyrics were always about something a lot deeper. She hasn't changed the meaning of what he was saying she's just made changes to the style of delivery so those subtler elements can be brought into the light. It absolutely shows how good a lyricist Em is. The reason this track always got praise from Music Industry bodies and the like is if you really listen to the original its just a masterpiece lyrically. This version finally brings those subtler elements out into the light
@alphaomega2117 yes that's obviously what the song is about. All of those things are implied but the context is still 100% rap battling.
Eminem being a "white" rapper, covered by a head banging, banjo shredding, female country singer. Name a more unconventional music crossover that works this good. I'll wait 😅
Beautiful unique voice
She's and Australian mostly Country singer.and has won about every awards you can in Australia.
Kasey is amazing isn’t she. And so good live. Apparently while the sound was recorded there was no video. They did a shout out to the fans and voila.
Epic describes this rendition so well. Thanks for this reaction.
Best cover I've heard in years!
💯💯💯💯
Newcastle Australia
Proud to be an Australian and even more so when you see amazing talent like Kasey Chambers, what an amazing performance
Just a one of a kind is Kasey.
Check out here song 'Ain't no little girl' - live at the Bluegrass underground for another epic performance.
Enjoyed your reaction! Kasey's interpretation of the song is unique and extraordinary! Amazing voice and artistry!
Australian Country Rock love it.
Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia or Newey as we call it. It's about 45 minutes North of me & I'm on the NSW Central Coast which is an hour & a bit North of Sydney
Another Central Coast watcher here. This is brilliant. Love Ems original but this is special.
I'm on the Central Coast too and I think this brilliant . Ems original is great but this gives feels in different ways .
Now that you have heard our Kasey do a cover, you need to react to Kasey's songs. The song Not Pretty Enough(2001) is a commentary on the reluctance of mainstream radio stations towards not playing her music; another great song to react to is Ain't No Little Girl(2016) a bit of a bluesy style song, she stated that this song 'wrote her not the other way round.
Newcastle, Australia. Kasey Chambers is an Australian icon.
Thank you Charlie I wasn’t ready
Don't forget that Kasey is 46 years old when she did this and if you don't believe me ask her dad. That's him over there on on the lap steel guitar. Cheers
Trust me… my reaction was the same as yours!
she'd make a captivating prophetess. she'd get her message across and shake things up in the spirit world
I've watched so many reactions to this song and every single time the feeling in the pit of my stomach when she really goes all in gets me every time!!!❤
Well that totally killed!
I think Kasey was really at her best in "The Dead Ringer Band"
Kasey Chambers is an Australian country singer-songwriter. Here are some of her most popular songs:
“The Captain” from the album ‘The Captain’ (1999)
“Better Be Home Soon” from the album ‘The Captain’ (1999)
“Not Pretty Enough” from the album ‘Barricades & Brickwalls’ (2001)
“Goliath Is Dead” from the album ‘Campfire’ (2018)
“If We Had A Child” (ft. Keith Urban) from the album ‘Dragonfly’ (2017)
“Pony” from the album ‘Wayward Angel’ (2004)
“Lose Yourself - Live at Civic Theater, Newcastle, Australia” (2022)
“Bittersweet” (feat. Bernard Fanning) (2014)
“Familiar Strangers” from the album ‘Wreck & Ruin’ (2012)
“One More Year” from the album ‘Rattlin’ Bones’ (2008)
Great cover (my favourite ever) .. and spot on comment about Kasey's vocals.
Her father played steel guitar and backup vocals. The audience were asked to send in their phone videos, and this was edited together from those.
Absolutely rocking performance .. haunting, angry, determined!
Kasey felt every word, because she knows this kind of story from personal experience.
Love her guts.
Brandon Dodd on harmony/lead guitar.
The first two verses are written in the third person and are more desperate in style, only the third verse is in the first person and very determined. Kasey reflects the lyrics properly.
Haha are you suggesting kasey did Eminem's song properly and he didn't?
@stanroach2842 well the vibe of a song isn't only dictated by the lyrics. It's set by the music. Eminem's song was written for a certain context. It was about going on stage for a rap battle. His vibe wasn't gloomy and depressing because that's not the feeling he wanted to portray and thusly that's not how the music directs the feeling either.
I don't think we can say Kasey is a better story teller just because she chose much more contrasting vibes. Vibes that, in all fairness, don't fit with the context of the original song. Not that it matters because that's her own interpretation and that's what art is about. But to say you find it amusing when people say it's a 'pump you up' song is funny in itself because that exactly what this song was written as. That's what battle rap is all about.... 😂
@17tura…Charlie likes picking fights cos he’s never wrong… 🧐 … however, I think both versions are correct….
Haha whoa! Who is picking fights? I asked a question
This was put together from videos taken by people in the audience. They put a call out after the show because it was such a special performance. Newcastle, NSW, Australia.
She is an Aussie treasure 👏her dad on slide guitar and hole band brilliant 👏
Kasey is "country/folk" but categories don't always hold. Her voice is very unique. If you like the vocals, check out her version of Pretty Enough and two originals The Captain and Rattlin' Bones.
Im a Newcastle nsw girl. I wish id been there😮 Kasey is an incredible talent who's been singing since being a small girl❤️❤️😎 just amazing! She's an Eminem fan also😃❤❤❤❤❤
She’s an Australian country singer she’s amazing
That’s our Kasey......luv you you Aussie girl.
My hometown. Kasey is amazing!!
"Extraordinary" Indeed brother.
Kasey owned this song!!
Charlie, you need to listen to Kasey's Barricades and Brickwalls album. It's fantastic! The Captain and Am I Not Pretty Enough are her most famous songs.
The guy in the cowboy hat, stage right, was her dad, and yes he was on the pedal steel guitar.
have you ever seen a pedal steel?
That’s her dad on steel guitar 🎸
That was amazing
That’s our AUSSIE GIRL!
Yes thats a steel guitar being played lap slide... By kaseys 72 year old father.
2 of my favourite songs, Charlie. One by Eminem and this by Kasey. I think both are brilliant but delivered so differently that its almost a different song. How great is that?? What a brlliant writer he is that this song can be interpreted so differently, but so amazingly. I have been waiting to hear your thoughts, Charlie, so thank you for reacting to this song by Kasey.❤
Newcastle Australia.
Stunned.
If her version of this song don't take your soul to another dimension and feel something. Then your numb from the neck up.
I was lucky to spend an evening with Kasey a few months ago and she sang 5 or 6 songs and talked about writing “Not Pretty Enough”. She’s just an amazing musician.
What took you so long Charlie! 😂 I, for one, have been waiting for nearly 2 years for you to react to this! 😂 Glad you loved it as much as we do! The whole performance was beyond…Kasey was phenomenal, the band was phenomenal…the keyboard dude was just in his own zone and Kasey’s Dad, Bill, on slide was a fantastic addition that just pulled it all in! ❤ Not to mention…who else would have the guts to shred a banjo the way Kasey did? The more I hear and see this, the more I appreciate the work Kasey put into her craft during Covid lockdown and the heart she put into this. Pure perfection on every single level! I really hope Eminem appreciates that someone in another country loved his song enough that they spent a lot of time re-crafting and perfecting one of his most famous songs! It is actually really sad that there has yet to be any public comments from him at all. His record label may have given permission for Kasey to record this and make money from it but no word from Em as yet. 😢 Kasey is one of our greatest country/bluegrass/folk singers ever and deserves every single accolade she can get! BTW.. welcome to the Kasey rabbit hole…you have 25+ years of her music to catch up on! 😂
I really like another song of hers called Ain't No Little Girl which apparently was written in frustration with the music marketers who weren't giving hers songs any playtime. This song broke through.
'Very Jeff Buckley'....oooh. A 'Reactor' who knows his music, finally.... I'll subscribe.
This is quite simply the THE BEST COVER of any song, ever. Johnny Cash held that mantle... Kasey ripped it away from him. So now, knowing this, whenever I'm bored.. or inspired.. I find the next 'reactor' and wonder how asinine they're going to be.
You did well Sir! So well, that at 4.12 when you said 'I never thought I'd hear this song sung like this', I thought two things: 1. You really hadn't heard this before... And 2. You have no idea what's about to happen.
I'm jealous of your first experience!
Newcastle NSW Australia
That's her dad on the slide guitar! Brother on lead.
That's not Nash, that's Brandon Dodd
I heard someone call this song “ rockabilly “ ❤ 😊
Kasey is one true national treasure. I respect EMINEM and what this gives are more opportunities to appreciate he is more than a rapper. He is a poet
Kasey is aussie
We got lots of secret treasures here in Oz, you just heard one of 'em.
AU - Australia😄
I don't compare songs. If the original was great, a great cover doesn't make the original less great. Eminem's version and Kasey's version are 2 brilliant songs, performed differently.
Kasey had success, and yes I'm Aussie, just look at my handle lol. She got pretty screwed by the industry in the early days by radio stations not playing her music (where 'Not Pretty Enough' is aimed at) also by Sony Records not signing her. So, you see the raw emotion in this song, because it's happened to her. I'm not a massive Kasey fan, never have been, I'm 50 btw so was well and truly about but this has given me a true appreciation, and some other songs previously, but this is a home run.
The best explanation for the 'twang' & for it being a good thing (like you said) I've heard was by Lolli at TheFairyVoiceMother. She even demonstrated the difference between nasality & twang. It was also a great reaction just like yours, Charlie. Thanks
Casey Chambers is a long time Australian singer, mainly country and western. Yes, it’s mind boggling.
Thankyou Marshall
Mathers that is 💯♥️🇦🇺
Ok ok ok, 🤔 Ummm that was different. I was not expecting that either, But I'm not going to lie, I kinda was digging it when it went hard towards the end.👍🏽
Yes, the powerful honesty reflects her own life trying to be taken seriously in the music world and in her family group! It's real! 🤔
I have listened to this many times, love the intensity, raw emotion and banjo shredding! Brilliant interpretation. Eminem gave Kasey permission to put this version on her Spotify, so he must rate it.
Newcastle is about an 1½hrs north of Sydney. Casey lives just half way between both. She has had a very interesting childhood worth hearing her story.
That’s her Dad on the lap steel.
Newcastle Australia, where Silverchair come from. Heard of them? 😝
Glad your doing this Charlie. Must be one of the most reacted clips of 2023. Always interested in your opinion on music.
I saw her play this at by the c festival in Torquay Victoria Australia just before Christmas. Hadn’t really heard her stuff before and I genuinely had to do a double take being like why do I know the lyrics to this song 😂 It’s definitely a different take.
❤
The bit was very Guns N Roses Civil war song: I mean the music and some of her singing, once the guitar and the rest of the band joined in. To understand you have to listen to Civil war, one of Guns N Roses great songs. Casey Did an amazing job, love it so much.
Great reaction. Got a new sub
Casey is an Australian country legend!
Kasey with a K!
The Ads stuffed this reaction up big time. Damn it
Were they any different to the ads on other videos?
And what about Kasey’s voice … unreal.
Absolutely amazing (I feel like “cover” doesn’t fit )
Moulding? Maybe , as she moulded it and made it her own.
Up with my top “covers” of all time.
Blew me away.
*just a side note Taylor Swift must’ve seen this as I heard she has now done a cover of Lose Yourself that’s very similar to Kasey’s.
I really hope that if she was inspired by Kasey she gives credit where it’s due.
Great reaction, fantastic voice❤
I just checkt your reactions out and couldnt find Tommy Johansson 😱 so sorry for you😢. But give it a try, often reactors use to start with his cover of Steelharts Shes Gone... and then they just fall into his deeeeep rabbithole😊
