Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!
Great way to start the weekend. Coffee and a fly fishing video from Dan on a Saturday morning.
Very kind - thank you! :))
Another great video! My wife and I genuinely appreciate the time you spend putting out truly spectacular content. We typically watch your videos through the CZcams app on the big TV, so we can enjoy them on a larger screen, but there is no way to comment. We watch all of your videos. It's easy to forget that you don't have a full crew filming, doing sound, etc. Your videos are very immersive. When you pause to realize it's typically just you, the quality you deliver is mind blowing. This video was very enjoyable, and extremely well done, just like the rest of your growing library. A sincere thank you for all that you do.
Thanks Jeff - I really do appreciate that you took the time to let me know, thank you! Thank you and your wife for being a part of the journey - very cool. Cheers and FISH-ON!
What an epic catch! Bucket list fish for our area since they are endangered.
not at all endangered depending on where in washington! they are everywhere on the olympic peninsula
Nice video boss! I love how every corner you get surprised by something. Whether it's by catching fish or spooking them or just seeing some bear scat 😁
Beautiful place. Great fishing.
Pretty stream. Kinda cool with the Bulls.
Fun Video Dan, great trek downstream in this little creek. Nice Entertainment. I thought you are supposed to fish places before you step in them....... Sorry, I know that is Bull..... Thanks, Until next time, fish on.
Thanks Lee - it was a good day indeed :)) Nice pun! Cheers!
Woooooow,mr. beautiful video again, that clear water and,of course, very beautiful, beautiful, beautiful fish. Where do go to those placené,sir Dan.👀👀👀😱😱😱😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️🤠🤠🤠👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗
Great video, I’m in Montana surrounded by some of the biggest and best large river fly fishing but it’s only right to get on the creeks and streams…that bull trout was beautiful..keep up the good work
Thank you Kody - cheers!
Great video and very helpful to a beginnner here in hong kong. Lovely scenary.
Pretty stream, nice little video. With the bull trout and all the wood, I thought I knew the river but those power lines from earlier in the video are throwing me off. That is pretty wild that you found an even year pink way up in the headwaters like that.
Thanks Matthew- pretty amazing day indeed and I too was shocked to learn that was an off year pink!
You're like the bull magnet these days! 🤣
I have been getting very lucky recently for sure :))
New sub! Liked🙏👏🙂❤️✌️
Welcome to my channel!
New sub ! Liked 🙏🙂😊

Just found this channel. Some absolutely beautiful scenery and awesome content. Super jealous. Keep on truckin on
Welcome to my channel Steve - glad to have you here!
Dude. Your the best!
But that's part of fishing,after all. Otherwise,Fish on,anyway.🤠🤠🤠😍😍😍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗
What are the differences between a bull trout and a rainbow? I'm down here in rainbow and brown trout country. That is beautiful and looks like a great spot to fish!
Try full sink line and big flies like dungeons. Usually where there's 1 bull there's a dozen more.
Still waiting for fall to start, down near portland we are still bone dry. Need some rain!
I hear that in bc, went to check the local run, didn't even get out the truck
I was just there on September 16! What day were you there? I saw a huge red sided coho in the hole you landed the bull in, but couldn't entice a bite out of him. Nicely done! It stays good below the big log jams, and there more big bulls!
It wasn't that long ago for me! Have you ever gone up from the bridge? I wondered is the trout head up creek when the salmon head in...those Coho, seemingly don't like to eat when they are in fresh waters.
@@FlyFishDan I have a little bit, but only on days where flows have been really high. Below the bridge is so magical, it’s hard to wade away from!
Y'all have a whole different way of talking, doncha? Ill have to show this to my favorite fisherman & see what he says. He was a Bass Master.
Do you ever get nervous going to fly fish in such remote areas by yourself? What precautions do you take? Living in the PNW, I feel like I always have to watch over my back with Mountain Lions or Bears. Especially the areas North of where I live in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Haha.
even in jersey, ive hit some remote streams and had unplanned run-ins with black bear on trails before. definitely keeps you on your toes
I carry a sidearm with me during these trips - a Glock 10mm with hot cast rounds. Certainly gives me peace of mind when in remote places like this.
Thanks Dan! Will make sure I do the same next time I brave going alone. Nice Bull Trout, by the way. Certainly on the bucket list for me
@@shad3128 Yeah, that’s one way to keep you on your toes… haha. At least in Jersey you don’t have to worry about Grizzlies or Mountain Lions, they are less likely to be skiddish if you do have a run in 😅
Sorry sir sorry for the misspelling, there should of course have been places.🙄🙄🙄
Another fun video, Dan; thanks for sharing ! Curious your thoughts on why more fish seem to get off during the fight when they are hooked with a streamer - I have this problem and it's exacerbated now that I'm trying to bring a streamer setup whenever I go out these days. I speculate it has to do with hook size / penetration, but the strikes are so hard that I'm not sure why they wouldn't be hooked well. Any opinion?
When you filmed that salmon, that was a pink btw. Really weird that you found one because this is the off year for pink salmon. And you can’t stop hooking bulls! I think I know the name of this river, I have only given it a try a few times but I think It might be time to go back there. Anyways great video!
They have phantom runs every now and then on off years
@@iseeholesinhisgame4203 I'm aware, its still an uncommon thing.
That was crazy - I thought it might be a pink, but then thought nah...that was last year! Love the bulls too :))
what fly did you have on when the bull trout hit? beautiful fish!
I was using a large sculpin pattern in olive
When you use your streamer on your 5wt do you use a sinking leader?
I don't typically - I will vary my depth with the length of leader. This was a pretty small stream, so it was easy to get the sculpin pattern down.
And it look like sometimes you don't succeed and the fish falls off the hook.👀👀👀😱😱😱
Hey, get a waterproof case for your phone and you can dunk it without messing up the audio after
Good tip! I wonder if it effects the audio overall?
@@FlyFishDan I haven’t noticed ANY difference. I have to have a case cause I drop my phone 20 times a day. I actually think it’s better in the wind too
Power lines totally gave it away
Only if you’ve been there! Shhhhh ;)
that is actually a pink salmon
That first fish looked like a juvinile salmon from the brief look I had
Big fish for sure
I want to see a catch and cook
Next video - you'll get your wish! :))
The bull trout is listed as a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act throughout its range in the contiguous United States.

Yes they are - I felt pretty lucky to catch one on this day for sure.
