Join us for episode 5 of For Wild's Sake: The Rare Trout Chronicles, season 1! A series which explores human beings relationship to the natural world, in hopes of gaining a better understanding of how and why we assign value to wild things and places. In a quest to illustrate rare and threatened species of wild native trout in watercolor, artist Chase Bartee and wife Aimee set off on a multi year, cross country adventure of discovery.
After several months of desert rambling, and unexpected lockdowns, we're finally turned loose and back in search of rare trout specimens to illustrate. Our quest leads us to the White Mountains of eastern Arizona in search of Apache Trout (Oncorhynchus apache) but the winds of fate have other plans. With early season temperatures skyrocketing, the streams in Apache Sitgreaves National Forest were swollen with runoff, forcing us to abandon ship and kill some time in New Mexico while we waited out the torrents. Luckily, with improved conditions we were able to seek another rare trout, The Rio Grande Cutthroat (Oncorhynchus clarkii virginalis) which holds the title as the first salmonid described in the New World by European explorers. But with a history that long predates the Conquistadores, and a rocky and unstable present, the future of this unique trout is anything buy certain and we quickly discover that they may be harder to find than we originally thought.

You keep repeating - excellence. From serious history to joyous fishing ... the story, videography, photography, editing and production - and the music! So, so good! Cliffhanger too - I feel like the next episode gonna see some Apache Trout action. I'm smiling big while pondering how to help our great trout waters ... I'm glad you offered your Patreon option to help support your incredible work. Thanks for doing what you do.
Worth the wait. thank you!
Always an amazing watch
Now THIS is a film worth making and watching. The care and pacing and wealth of historic information - the parallel slow activities of traveling, hiking, researching, scouting and then rendering an image of the fish is so rewarding. Thank you for this!
It was worth the wait!
I'd say that Tight Loops are in a league of their own in fly fishing when it comes to the standard of visuals, story telling and editing.
as an Arizona native i understand why we threw caution to the wind and just started adding in Brown Trout all over the place. Despite all the water in the mountains it's still not super fishy country. People were just excited about fishing and wanted to see more of them in their fisheries. It's a bkessing and a curse how dang resiliant Brown Trout are. I'm stoked we learned from some of our mistakes before it was too late and are trying to bring the native species back.
Awesome 👌
I grew up trout fishing the Whites and New Mexico.
Never gets old
Great video
Worth waiting 2 years
Thank you for all you do and teach us. The work you put in to these videos is amazing.
Always a good day when Tight Loops posts
You guys should seriously look into the Aurora Trout, only residing in 12 lakes in Northeastern Ontario, Canada, very rare and very difficult to catch !

My Favorite Cutt! This has been long awaited!
Yesssiiirrr!
I can’t hardly fathom how excellent these productions are. Thanks so very much
Wonderful. Simply wonderful 😍
Bravo! 👍👍👍
Great storytelling, and editing. I learned a lot. I did a story in West Texas back in 1997 and went searching for the Pecos near Ft. Stockton. It was a trickle then; I walked over it without having to take a bigger step.
So worth the wait, as always. I think I enjoy your audio editing as much as the visual. You guys make beautiful films. Thanks.
from your 1st video, you guys just keep nailing it
Your videos are great 👍. Can’t deny. Thank you
Another amazing film. Thanks for filling the void after the Mak and Owen's series ended last week.

That creek you fished in NM is loaded with wild rio grande's even in the lower sections. Such a fun place to fish.
What creek is this?
@@justinmartinez9692 cabresto creek.
@@robertmabry4172 is that above or below the lake? I’ve been to Cabresto lake and I’ve caught a few cutthroats. I’ve also fished the creek above the lake but not very far in.
@@justinmartinez9692 it's in the creek upstream from cabresto lake.
Such a good job!
Totally awesome guy's 👏 I just wish they were a hour long ... Looking forward to the next one
I love how you still use music from the CZcams audio library. You are proving a point to the snobby film making community!
Ha! I wish I could say it was to prove a point, but in reality is just because we’re poor. But seriously, I’d you take the time to really search through the audio library there’s some really good stuff in there!
First time seeing one of your videos. Im 40 seconds in and I already know this is about to be great 🔥.
Just wonderful! Keep it up!
Well worth the wait! Beautifully filmed and edited. Can't wait for the next episode! Thank you.👍

Another awesome educational film! I am sorry you weren’t able to catch an Apache Trout. I’m actually from the reservation. Know the area well that you fished and in the future if you want to film again, I would be willing to point y’all to some local spots.
Safe travels thank you for the videos and Tight Lines! 🤙🏼
Thanks, Kit! We actually caught a ton when we return in the next episode! Tune in this Sunday to see it ;) but we’ll still take you up on that offer next time we’re in town
Looks like you guys need to learn tenkara. 👍🏼
America's first trout
It was very interesting that the largest threat to most of these species was staring us right in the face during the video. Those dense forests are an artifact of the lack of the natural fire regime or ecological thinning that both maintains a healthier forest as well as healthy streams and aquifers. The current overstocked forest condition increases water use via evapotranspiration from the trees as well as preventing deeper snow drifts that melt more slowly and put more water into the surface aquifer that maintains health streams through summer. As described in the video, we see a more flashy short run off period that wastes potentially stored water. Much of this issue has been caused by meddling in the science instead of allowing the sciences of forest , fire, and watershed ecology to dictate. In the end, we get what we vote for. On the plus side, a watershed can return to health in just a year or two after thinning. Streams that were intermittent can become perennial almost "over night". It is an amazing phenomenon to witness.
999th thumbs up babyyy
Yo what song is that in the intro! I love it
Great video as always. Beautiful fish in awesome country. Thanks so much for sharing. What brand/type of backpack is Aimee carrying? Thanks
Not sure the video mentioned it, but cutthroat trout have been around for more than three-million years in the interior west. Apache trout are descendants of the Mexican gold trout which is a younger species.
Gorgeous.. Thank you so much for these images !!!
Technical question : what kind of rod did you use to fish these tiny creeks ? Short rods, 4 size line and short head leader i guess ?
Top notch vid! Do you mind if I ask which camera you mainly use?
Thanks! We shot this video back in 2020 and the primary camera was an a7iii, we now shoot with an a7siii
We also have a larger cinecam called an FS700 that is used for a lot of the slo motion stuff you see
Amazing content as always. You’re a natural and gifted storyteller with such a deep connection to nature. I do have a question - what day pack is Aimee using on your hikes?
Are you going to share your recipes and more on your van set up?
The youtuber TenkaraAddict fishes this region a lot, you might try to contact him and compile reports?
What region of the forest did you fish in? I’m moving within driving distance of Carson National forest and planning on making a few weekend outings over the next few months. Where did you research where to fish? Any information helps!
