- Rescue Horse wont leave its safe place at the horse sanctuary!! We travel to Tenerife to help some horse's, This lovely horse at Tenerife Horse rescue is in need of help. he cant be lead out away from the the sanctuary without being dangerous and worried! he now has arthritis and needs lots of walks out.. As kind as you can be but as firm as you need to be is a great maxim to live by. It applies to all situations.
The volunteers are wonderful people but I so agree with you on hand feeding.
What an absolute treasure-trove of problem-solving this wise man is! Can't express my appreciation and respect enough! The relief, that his work certainly must bring, to troubled critters, like Capri, is absolutely golden. 🍎The smile seems transformed, as well!🧏♀

Thought the girl from the rescue centre was lovely and really willing to take things on board .
This video really demonstrates the way positive reinforcement training can backfire and become negative imprinting training instead. The rescue centre were really open to listening to a different approach, which was wonderful to see, plus your methods demonstrably made a vast difference in a short amount of time which really underlined how effective your approach is. Clearly they adore their horses and want to communicate with them as well as they can and your session will help them all move forward more smoothly (and safely) for sure. Another great job done, well done Steve and Tanya! ☺️

They did say that he had become very dangerous to work on. Steve has a couple of sessions retraining these problems.

I would imagine with ring bone. arthritis and flat feet this horse is in some level of pain or at least discomfort.

I imagine that this person working with the horse will watch the video of Steve's session with them and learn a lot. It will be eye-opening to see Capri invading her space so frequently. It may not be so noticeable to her in person when she's right there with the horse, but very obvious when viewed in a recording!
Brilliant job Steve. I do hope they check out your channels and learn more to help their rescue horses, especially the aggressive ones. Wonderful to see this rescue center and their dedication to the animals in their care. ❤

I think you were very diplomatic. This horse obviously improved, started listening to you, which we see often in your vids, no hitting, no cruelty. Just leadership allowing Capri to not worry about anything because he felt safe. I hope they watch your videos and see there’s nothing cruel about telling horses to be respectful. You are my horse hero. Thank you as usual.
Right, not only not cruel, but actually kind because if the horse has a leader it can trust, then it can relax, which is one of the kindest things to give.

That was brilliant. I went to Tenerife in ‘85 … they were just building up the one side .. the desert side. I also went to the other side where there was lush vegetation. Saw the Volcano too, which was snow covered.
It’s funny how some horse people don’t truly understand how the mind of a horse works (i.e., the pitfalls of hand feeding). Hopefully, all the trainers will be able to instil some of your proven training techniques.
I do hope you both had a wonderful time there and were able to soak up some sun rays. I managed to get a good tan when I was there.
I gather you’ll be leaving for the US not long after your return. I hope you both have a safe flight there and back … and that it will be an enjoyable work vacation.

These "volunteers" believe HORSES have the same emotional structure as humans, with the same emotions! Steve did the best he could, but was walking on eggshells with these IDIOTS!! The horse presented had very little difficulties and the horses with the REAL PROBLEMS WERE HIDDEN! What does that say about their misguided animal welfare sanctuary? They are NUTTERS!!
the first thing I see is that his hoof has way too much toe which is going to make his arthritis worse
It almost looks like he is lame too, near hind.
I was wondering if he is suffering from DSLD. Seems to be dropped in his pastern, especially in the back legs. Yes hooves too much toe.
Yes, those front toes need to be brought back quite a bit. Could be very straining angles created for his joints.
Funny, I was just going to write a comment on Capri's front hooves too when I read yours! He is missing that rear part I can't remember what it's called! That's the farrier's fault totally! I had a farrier like that for a horse in Mallorca decades ago and he left her with basically flat feet and straining the tendons far too much. I got another one who gradually built up that rear straight part again. Yes, with Capri I noticed that straight away and confirmed what I saw during the exercises Steve did with him. Let's hope that will be sorted now!...

That horse was very comfortable with Steve as he had released his muscle down well quite a couple of times 😂, and my boys do the same thing when I'm around them to, this is a compliment to us as they are safe and happy as we are there leader, great to see. ❤❤❤❤
I am going to need to watch this again. I watched while washing dishes. 🙄 I appreciate the explanation of which horses will not be an issue with hand feeding and which will never trust because of it. Some things I have noticed make sense now. Thank you.

Wonderful to see the rescue work they're doing in a different part of the world. Capri was so much calmer and he looked happy after your work. Being a 100% SY fan I want the humans to hang on your every word, be in awe watching you communicate with the horse and teach him what he needs to know amazingly fast with kindness love and understanding. To me it's breathtaking. I just love watching you do what you do.
Do you think his sheath needs cleaning? I notice he’s hanging out a good deal of the time. 🤷♀️
Agree totally about not training with food rewards, for Steve's reasons. Clarity, boundaries, patience and leadership have produced better results in the end and greater trust is what I have learnt. Lack of firmness and consistency, is lack of clarity which results in lack of respect for you and your space. Have enough firmness and energy working him to keep his attention on you not elewhere. Breakdown is break through because you are holding your boundary & leadership which will result in less challenge in the future. Your leadership creates more confidence and engagement in the horse

Interesting to watch this horse - looking away, then dropping his head, then taking a strp forward. Very stuck in his habits - or very slow learner.. But he did pretty well on his walk. Tanya making the donkey bray cracked me up! Bless you guys.
I feel like part of it was Steve was trying to be a bit more gentle so as not to upset the positive only trainers. And this horse was not super easy to push around so the consequence he got from unwanted behavior was not a huge deterrent in his mind. He also seemed fairly comfortable backing up so he's like oh yeah, that thing, ok fine but he wasn't super worried about the consequences he was given in the first place. Since Steve was very mild with him, the horse was never concentrating super hard on the tasks. Also you can see how fast this horse desensitizes, at first the flag made him move but after a few times, the horse was already getting dull to the flag, he already figured out that flag was actually a nothingburger. So Steve has to train him to walk forward before the horse trains himself to not care about that silly old flag. Also this horse had a long history of walking into spaces and mooching food, so yeah, habit as well.

I'm not a horsey person, but I love Steve's horsemanship video's. Makes me feel like I want to get a horse! Not likely though as I'm a pensioner so I don't have the financial means

Perhaps a rescue in your area where you can go to groom horses, hand walk them or save a couple dollars monthly to help them get new equipment. Go to farm sales/auctions to pickup equipment.
Thank you for volunteering your time to help I'm sure that they will share your techniques with others and it will continue to go and help other animals that need direction
It is always time well spent watching Steve. I am so amazed how patient he is with his clients . I am lucky I guess my horse was a rescue and as she got bigger and stronger she was difficult but ! I found Steve I practiced a lot of it. I believe that she hasn't been badly just starved. So as the training kicked in she soon remembered a lot of her previous training but also all the new Steve training methods.I am un able to ride this year. But in the b🎉🎉ox I only have to point and she moves out of the way. If I need to guide her over I can genuinely give her the lightest touch. She is gorgeous I only hope at the age of 22 next year she will be sound enough to let me ride her again. It's my huge incentive to get my self fit and better. Thank you Steve and Tanya for giving this amazing opportunity to those with an open mind to relearn and improve thier exsissting skills. Regards Janet
Positive reinforcment is ok with some horses ,others will not focus on you because they are only thinking of food ,,also they can become nippy and pushy,,its quite a difficult training method,,,just use with caution😊

The difference between 17:20 and 55:00 is absolutely dramatic as far as the horse’s behavior when he’s connected to Steve with the rope. At 55:00 the horse is beautifully still, at rest, and not looking around at all. So amazing!

STEVE ITS HARD TO TRAIN A HORSE IN THOSE CURCUMSTANCES .. BUT YOUR RIGHT I COULD SEE HE WAS STARTING TO LIKE THE DISAPLIN...LOOKING STRONGER ...I THINK THE LADY NEEDS TO BE MUCH STRONGER WITH HER MOVEMENTS..AND HER THOUGHTS
Some horses are okay with treats. I had a lease horse that couldn't be given treats from my hand ever. Treats were given in the food. Omg so pushy. A lovely little mare at a rescue, very gentle nature does so well with the odd treat.
They are doing a wonderful job at the rescue centre. I hope they take on board your principles and advice, and they seem keen to learn.
Do they need to ride Capri? I hope not. Hopefully he will be more comfortable over the next months when he has a proper trimming program.

I am positive that she has gone to a much better place and you will see her soon and I am sure that I will have the privilege of meeting her then. I know this because I know that you display the traits of being a Christian. I have finally gotten to the point in my life that I have access to the horse my ex bought for me a few years ago and I am so excited that I have found you and your training skills, having followed you for a few years and now I can finally put them to use, I wish I could afford to have you come to the Mid-West to visit us. Maybe you will get a call from someone in Kansas City, I could drive that.

Steve- I’d love for you to meet Chris from the Mustang Sanctuary in Joshua Tree, California. They’ve done amazing things with rescue horses and I think you’d appreciate and want to help their cause to save the American mustang and to help their other rescues.

Would love to see some more vids that show small things you can do to change an attitude in hand for horses like this, riding school etc without having to first to a lot of groundwork tackling major problems as in most of your vids (still love them though!).
I work for the riding for the disabled and our group uses horses from the local riding school. All but one of the horses we use have a lot of common riding school horse issues pushing boundaries, some push into space a lot and not all our volunteers are able to handle this well, some will try and nip if you say no to “unrequested forward motion” and some can just switch off and get very lazy.
We have a tricky balance of getting a horse to be responsive despite unexpected or timid behaviour when ridden and we have the time of tacking up and a 10 minute warm up to try and get them listening so I’m always on the lookout for little things I can do to try and set the horse and rider up for success.

Oookay, so Tenerife has been relocated to Wales. I recognise the sea views as I stand on the North Coast of Somerset ( Minehead ) to be exact as I look out across enjoying the gorgeous yellow sands and blue seawaters of Wales. You can’t fool an old git like me Steve 👍

I also had a dog named Capri. Named that because she climbed like a goat and slept stretched out on the back of our couch. This was a Doberman.

I was excited to see you were in Tenerife because I went there once several years ago; I live near Chicago US so this was very exotic to me. I wanted to see the animal park they have there, Loro Parque because they have a huge diverse collection of parrots and I am a lover of parrots. They are trying to breed the Spix macaw which is extinct in the wild. Anyway, Tenerife was beautiful with the volcano, resorts and beaches.

I think the horses hearing is so sensitive that the sound of slapping is so sharp it’s not pleasurable …
And horses don’t slap one another. As Steve said he does what a mother does to its foal.
Take it from someone who knows - Steve is absolutely correct, I was volunteering at a different overseas rescue 2 months ago and to keep the story short I no longer have the top of my right ear…

I feel like she taught him to push in for treats. There for it’s going to be a real struggle for her to unteach the behavior. It’s easier to prevent bad behavior then correct a bad behavior.

Proper foot protection is so important around a 1200 lb animal. Athletic shoes are insufficient.

I am just beginning the video but I do have a question. The places that don’t want CZcams videos made, do you still film them and send the videos to them? I would think that would be missing out on an excellent tool if they don’t want you filming even for just their benefit

I just thought I would add. She does get in my space and often turns and gives me a black look when doing up belly straps on rugs and the girth. Not always and She has nipped me but I did react well with in the 3sec time limit. But definitely not with grace. 😢😅
But I don't hand feed only when I go to the field to catch her. Basically because her little fury friend can cause me a few issues if I don't offer nibbles. As soon as that plastic bottle rattles they are mine. 😂❤
