if I don't currently own any beading thread, will sewing thread work? if so, what type would you recommend? cotton, polyester, nylon for example...?

It's nylon thread, brand Miyuki from Japan, its thichness is 0.2mm. Of course you can use sewing thread if it strong and thin enough.
