  • With the permission of Jay Ungar (composer of Ashokan Farewell), Priscilla Herdman and lyricist Grian MacGregor, this slide show blends one of my favourite pieces of music with photos from the movie, "Cold Mountain" and images from the era of the Civil War.

I've been listening to and playing folk music for 50 years or so.
Even so, when I heard this beautiful/sad melody during "The Civil War" series, it fit the film so perfectly that I thought it was from that era -- only learning its origin quite later.

It was my belief that this melody was beyond words. I was wrong. My wife and I sat transfixed as we watched and listened. The images complimented the words and music so well. Thank you for your contribution to this lovely work.

"The Ashokan Farewell", as sung by Priscilla Herdman with lyrics by Grian MacGregor - lovely Scottish name - is hauntingly beautiful.

I've loved Priscilla Herdman's singing since hearing her in a concert in 1981 in Buffalo, NY. Since then, I've followed her career from afar. Her voice has become richer, more beautiful and multifaceted with age. Thank you for this.

Outstanding video! After several viewings, I am still moved to tears with the beauty of your excellent production. It has been said that the difference between pleasure (a fleeting experience) and joy is that joy has the ability to regenerate itself over time, when memories persist. This wonderful video as combined with Ashokan Farewell from Cold Mountain is truly joyful, and something to be remembered. Thank you so very much for your thoughtful efforts and excellence!!

Unlike a comment on here that Priscilla's voice sounds "stilted" here, I think it meshes very well indeed with Jay Ungar's original score for a tune set in the 1860's.

The sun is sinking low in the sky above Ashokan
The pines and the willows know soon we will part
There's a whisper in the wind of promises unspoken
And a love that will always remain in my heart
My thoughts will return to the sound of your laughter
The magic of moving as one
And a time we'll remember long ever after
The moonlight and music and dancing are done
Will we climb the hills once more?
Will we walk the woods together?
Will I feel you holding me close once again?
Will every song we've sung stay with us forever?
Will you dance in my dreams or my arms until then?
Under the moon the mountains lie sleeping
Over the lake the stars shine
They wonder if you and I will be keeping
The magic and music, or leave them behind

I don't like the singer's voice, at all. The song sounds very stilted and formal as Priscilla sings it. Of course this is just my opinion, so don't get upset with me.
