  • Renown ambassadors of the hobby share their insights on the model car contests of the '70s and '80s and show some of their winning models. MPC, Revell, and GSL events encouraged us to start in the hobby and kept us building into adulthood.
Portions of this video were recorded at the 40th NNL in Toledo, Ohio, in 2019.

A Standing Ovation to All the Talented Modeler's at every build level. That brings their Vision and Kit-Craft to Frouishion in public displays of achievement. Where ever they may find and seek to show what they have built. Still inspiring to watch this segment. Thank you all. Kudose to the previous comments as well. I too enjoy building plastic model kits starting in the late 1960's & early 70's. When confident at some point with building models. I had my first public entry with a few model car types at the Martin county fair. One of which won me first place amongst a good showing. I would have liked to of known about the contests held in Minneapolis MN or else where at that time. But for not. Oh! the possibilities in hind sight. I had relatives in the hobby, but they passed away before my interest blossomed to have them mentor me. My Dad did get to learn from them and in turn passed on the combined skills that he taught me. How to build models and improve my craft, skills, and ability. Thanks Dad. My great grampa Walt Billett and grampa Richard Billett, ran a wholesale hobby business as well as a retail hobby shop in Minneapolis MN. Billett's Hobby and Craft, may be some of you have heard of it, or even purchased a kit and/or supplies in it's day. If so Thanks for your patronage. Keith Billett

Thanks for sharing this story, Keith. I'm sure there are modelers out there that remember Billett's Hobby! There are clubs to join (or start!), IPMS events, and still shows around. In fact, the NNL North show in Bloomington, MN is scheduled for May 22, unless there has been a recent update. Search "NNL North Model Car Show 2022" online.

WoW Doug, your CZcams stories and coverage just keeps getting better! Then all the names, Wayne Saunders, Rick Hanmore, Roy Sorensen, Rich Morgan, Chuck Helppie, Andy Martin, Tim Boyd, John Papp and Doug Whyte, I remember reading those names through the years in Car Model, Model Car & Science, Scale Auto Enthusiast, Car Modeler, Model Cars... The stories were great!

Some amazing history there. I started modeling as a kid in the 70's and have been saving several unopened kits from the 80's and 90's to build "someday when I get older." After watching this, that "someday" is going to be today. Very inspiring video - thanks for sharing that...

That part at 0:13 really got me to sit up and take notice. We've all "chopped the top" of a model car at one point or another. But this is the very first time I'd ever heard of or seen a model builder actually RAISE the top of a model car, and it looks super cool! This model is a true Survivor!

THE DETAILS on those cars and the imagination of building/creating something WAY OUTSIDE the box. Is just amazing!! My dream build, that I accomplished in 3 months, a GENERAL LEE, is very detailed. And now seeing the builds you feature, wants me to put more details into it. I wish, modeling was a thing here in Michigan again, and the hobby shops were still around. It's a dying art I wish would thrive back. Hard and strong. ESPECIALLY the shows, to see, talk and network with others.

Excellent Video! My first experience of seeing "adult" models other than the ones my father built was in the Hot Rod Show World publications. My first was the 1980 version with the Charlie's Angels Van on the cover. Those models amazed me as a child and I'm even more amazed that I've seen many of those models featured in that issue in person and became friends with those builders as an adult.

@@rickhanmore3103 Rick Hanmore, I had the most fortunate experience to have met Tim Boyd at the Toledo NNL in '91. He was the editor on Modelers corner in Street RODDER magazine at the time and I got to meet up and talk to him when he wanted to photograph one of my street rod models on display for his magazine coverage. I had a great time talking to one of the legends about model cars and reminisce about his 1979 championship days with his 32 Ford ROADSTER and the orange custom 53 Chevy which have always blown me away!

GREAT historical documentation!!!!! Hot Rod Magazine attempted to restart a national / International model car contest in 1990 at Indy. It was very well done and seemed a success but ended after the 1991 contest. I was lucky enough to win a 2nd in 1990 and that kinda ended my contest building. I built for myself after that. THANKS

Years later I met a fellow builder, Steve Cote, when he joined our model club - RPM - Racing Plastic models. Steve won the adult class at the very same contest in 1973. And also the clear lexan slot car bodies is a great way to build a flawless looking shiny paint job and don't even gotta use any clear coat cuse you paint inside the lexan and it will always be very glossy like a mirror and you won't see any orange peel ever I have a few models that are lexan vacuum formed bodies and look amazing then a regular hard body. I just don't understand why building this little model cars is so addictive but it is alot of work and time sitting at a work bench carefully sanding and building every little part to perfection just to put it in a case after 4-12 plus months of constant work everyday few hours a day lol. And I did something like that with a old Pepsi can and some left over parts out of my parts box it's not to hard and make funny looking little gassers I call the three I built coke can gassers and gonna make a mini diorama with like 4 or 6 of them looking like they are the starting line and burnout box and staging at the local 1970s drag strip that some guy laid some concrete strip with a few gaurd rails and a home made drag light on his property to host gasser and grudge match racing flook it up it's so cool the real life 70s home made drag strips guys built on their properties they look sketchy super narrow and sketchy
